Players exalted at NW Fall League Finals

Fall League 

Finals event 

over the weekend of January 14-16, 

2011 at the Emerald Queen Casino 

in Tacoma. 

The new venue was a big hit with 

most of the players who liked the idea 

of staying closer to home, while others 

prefer to take it on the road. 

Emerald Queen staff was gracious 

and even fun, interacting with 

the players all weekend. Security was 

tight, so no funny business, just a relaxed 

weekend filled with solid dart 

action and good friends. 

A large picture of Janis Baker 

overlooked the tournament floor, a 

nice gesture by Medalist. State just 

wasn’t the same without Tacoma‘s 

dart queen - R.I.P. Janis! 

Medalist was proud to roll out 

the old-school trophies. The players 

were slack-jawed at the sight of the 

Pit, where a gleaming bank of trophies 

stacked six feet high on either side of 

two dressed up dart boards were ready 

for action. 

Each day brought a slew of qualifying 

league teams to the Emerald 

Queen with one goal: get to the Pit no 

matter what! We all know how elusive 

the Pit truly is. Just ask Peter Clark 

who made his first-ever Pit appearance 

after 20 years of playing! 

Those fortunate, or good enough, 

to get to the Pit enjoyed their 15 minutes 

of fame, win or lose. Wah Long 

made six appearances in the Pit that 

1st - AA Trios; Town Pub Jared, Gary, Bill 

Wah Long managed a whopping six Pit appearances last month during Medalist’s NW League Finals at the Emerald Queen Casino 

weekend! Way to go guys! Every team 

in the Pit toasted each other’s performance 

with champagne in a specially 

engraved keepsake glass. Medalist 

puts on quite a show! We are fortunate 

to be spoiled by such pomp and 

circumstance. 

Congratulations to everyone who 

earned their way to the NW League 

Finals, teams from Washington, Oregon, 

Idaho, and beyond.

Iley’s Leukemia Benefit 

Iley Puloka is almost four years 

old and was diagnosed with Leukemia 

just before last Christmas. Sparing 

any harsh details, this has brought 

complete devastation and great hardship 

to Iley and 

her family.  Local

is hosting a fundraiser 

to help 

Iley kick Leukemia 

and provide 

some relief for 

her family. Iley’s 

benefit event will 

be on Tuesday, 

February 8, from 

5pm-8pm. 

Festivities 

will include a 

DJ and karaoke 

starting at 

6:30pm, charity 

dart and pool 

t o u r n a m e n t s 

for a $5.00 donation to play. Winners 

will receive a gift certificate. 

Start time for the tournaments is 

at 6:30pm. Donated items by community 

vendors will be raffled off 

throughout the night. From 5pm on, 

the Log Cabin will donate proceeds 

from the bar. So come hungry and 

thirsty! All money raised will go to 

the Auburn KW Cares charity for 

Iley. If you have anything you would

New Years Day 

goes to the dogs

Chris Mackie entertained 21 

teams to kick off 2011 with a bang. 

Sporty's annual Dog Fight tournament 

consumed New Years Day, once 

again running in tandem with Cactus 

Moon's 22nd annual Cat Fight. 

Forty-two men, plus a few stragglers, 

filled the Adam Hansen Memorial 

Dart Room at Sporty's after a long 

night of celebration to bring in the new 

year. After dropping off their wives and 

girlfriends at Cactus Moon, the boys 

gathered for a day of darts designed 

specifically for them and them only. 

Five hundred bucks were added 

to the payout by Sporty's to ensure 

the players would not only show up, 

but also fight to land their respective 

teams in the top three spots for a 

healthy payday. 

Fortunately for the guys, there 

were plenty of pretty girls to look at 

between their trips to the dartboards, 

thanks to Sporty's ultra-cute bar staff. 

Everyone seemed appreciative of the 

fact that they had made it through yet 

another year, and looked forward to a 

better year ahead. Joe and Jack, owners 

of Sporty's, would do everything 

in their power to make this a reality, 

beginning with this very day, the first 

of a new season. Jack was on hand to 

not only rub elbows with his fellow 

shooters, but also attempt to compete 

in the tourney as he's become quite 

the prolific dart player. 

Mackie, Sporty's infamous dart 

coordinator, works hard to keep a positive 

atmosphere for the players that 

frequent his home location. He keeps 

a big smile on his face and positive 

attitude that resonates with the dart 

players here, no matter what time 

they may have gotten to bed the night 

before, if at all. 

After an enjoyable day of darts 

and camaraderie, there were just a 

handful of winners, but only one team 

to rise above the rest. Congratulations 

to your 2011 Dog Fight Champions: 

Will McClain and Dimitri McClain! 

In 2nd place, it was Mike Williams 

and Jack Stickles, and in 3rd 

place Lee Bradshaw and Dave Bresee. 

Way to go guys!

Certain dart houses stand the 

test of time. Others don’t. Bowlero 

Lanes in Tacoma is one of those houses 

that just does. 

They’ve recently seen a resurgence 

in their dart program under 

the watchful eye of Aaron “A-Train” 

Gregg, who has taken on the monumental 

task of managing the tournaments, 

leagues, and players alike. 

But, he’d be the first to tell you that 

he’s got lots of help too. The lovely 

Katie, who you probably saw tearing 

it up in the Pit at State last month, is 

right there helping

Lanes. Everyone is real friendly and 

Katie’s got a good grip on their player 

base. Players new and old are responding 

to their approach to the game. 

A-Train chimes in, “We’ve get lots 

of new players. If they’re bowling and 

walk in [the bar], I just ask ‘em if they 

wanna play darts.” 

“Play here or anywhere, doesn’t 

matter, just play,” he adds. 

“He’s got the right attitude”, says 

Hudy, who found himself at Bowlero for 

a Tuesday night tourney last month. 

Jerry Smith pops up, “This is the 

new Tacoma dart house!” 

Even SeSe and Pree were at 

Bowlero that night. Pree just took over 

the coordinating duties at Latitude 84. 

They offer a Thursday night shoot to 

Darrell with Co-Coordinator Katie 

compliment Bowlero’s weekly shoots 

Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Visit 

Dawsons every Wednesday and Sunday 

for dart shoots. Everyone seems 

to be getting along just fine in T-Town 

these days. 

Bowlero’s regular weekend tourneys 

are 543 payout ($500 w/20, $400 

w/16, $300 w/12) and start at 8pm on 

Friday and Saturday. Tuesday tourney 

starts after league and features 

a $300 Added w/12 teams. 

A-Train added Quick 8’s to all 

his tournaments, giving those players 

knocked out of the main event a chance 

to keep playing for 

something. The 

bar adds 150% to 

these Quick 8’s, 

which is pretty 

much unheard of. 

Usually they’re 

just 100% added, 

if you can even 

find them at all.

this season, and 

plan to continue 

to build on what 

they’ve started

building your leagues. We all agreed,

A-Train loves darts if you

lives for darts outside of his regular 

gig. Dude will drive cross-country 

for a tournament!

Though it wasn’t the actual 

day of her birth so many 

years ago, Roz was happy 

to celebrate the historic 

event on a humpday in 

mid-January. The 12th to 

be more accurate. 

Some fifty-plus dart players were 

happy to help Roz get her groove on 

at Ringers, along with Brett, Ringer’s 

owner, and his faithful staff, who 

went above and beyond that night. 

Brett had planned a big $600 Payout 

dart shoot for the evening and invited 

everyone with a January birthday to 

come out and play in the tournament 

absolutely free of charge. And trek on 

over to Ringers they certainly did too. 

The bar was jam-packed with familiar 

faces from around the dart community, 

plus a few new players that had 

inadvertently gotten wrapped up in 

the excitement and found themselves 

throwing darts for the very first time. 

And who was running the tour-

nament Well, that would be Cindi of 

course, but she made it clear that she 

was just helping out temporarily, having 

just “retired” as coordinator. She 

had the sign up sheet full of names, 

ultimately employing 25 teams for 

the event. 

Tony Ashworth, longtime dart 

stud, managed the bar and kept everyone 

all liquored up for the night. He 

was offering the dart players a $3.50 

One Night Stand special that night 

to go with the big ol’ cake someone 

brought out with Roz’s name scrawled 

across the top. 

State was just a week away, so 

many of the players were hoping to 

keep their throwing arms loose, and 

the social aspect of these tourneys is 

just another reason for getting their 

butts to the bar that night. Ringers 

is a fantastic atmosphere for darts, if 

you’ve never been. They’ve got a big 

open center island perfect for seating 

within and around. The party is 

always good and fun at Ringers Pub 

in Mountlake Terrace. Brett works 

hard to keep his bar clean and updated, 

not to mention full of bodies. 

Speaking of bodies, have you met any 

of his staff Besides Tony, he’s got a 

pretty gorgeous staff of servers that 

are real easy on the eyes. Tony’s not 

bad I guess, if you’re into that sorta 

thing, y’know.. guys. 

Lots of players from down south 

came out to support Roz that night too. 

It was kind of a melting pot of Puget 

Sound dart players – a gigantic and 

fun party smack dab in the middle of 

the week. 

Check out Ringer’s ad in this issue 

for more information on upcoming dart 

shoots in February, but I know that 

Mondays and Wednesdays are their 

regular weekly shoots nights. They’ll 

get things started up around 10pm 

after league matches are all wrapped 

up. They’ll get a pretty good turnout 

for these weekly shoots too, but their 

Special Event shoots are off the hook. 

Get in and check ‘em out sometime this 

month for a great time, and bring your 

appetite, because the food is really good 

and fresh. In fact, on Monday nights, 

they provide all-you-can-eat spaghetti 

night for just five bucks! Wednesdays 

is for wing-lovers… just 25 cent wings 

all night long baby!

Record-setting day at Flights

It was seven o'clock on the morning 

of Saturday, January 8, when folks 

starting showing up to Flights Pub. 

There was a big day that lay ahead. 

Lucky Pence and twelve other handchosen 

dart players were psyched to 

start throwing darts in hopes of setting 

a brand new world record in darts. 

The planning process for this 

event actually started years ago in 

Lucky's brain, and in the months leading 

up to the big day, had consumed 

all of his time and energy. He and his 

crew were up all night preparing the 

bar to accomodate the expected crowd 

of supporters. Not only was this to be 

a record-setting day, but with the help 

of so many others, Lucky was able 

to organize the entire event around 

the Make A Wish Founation with an 

all-day silent auction to benefit these 

bright-eyed children. 

Thirteen avid dart players from 

around the Puget Sound began throwing 

darts at 8:35am on two dart boards 

for almost exactly 11 hours, taking 

down a gigantic game of 300,001. 

You've heard of 501 Yeah, this makes 

501 a mere flash in the pan. The 

numbers and stats generated from the 

entire day of darts are both staggering 

and fascinating at the same time. 

There were over 800 rounds 

played in all. Todd Jordan led the 

pack with 27,358 points, followed by 

Juan Ramos with 25,864, Dave Foster 

with 25,793, Dave Bresee with 24,547, 

Jeff Springer Jr. with 24,543, Chad 

Brown with 23,669, Darin Bohland 

with 23,121, Jeff Ewing with 22,477, 

Steve Roth with 21,655, Sam Resa 

with 21,171, Lucky Pence with 20,901, 

Norm Wold with 20,184, and Dave 

Mozingo with 18,718. 

Although this was not a competition, 

the audience was great about 

making it one, which helped to keep 

the dart players interested long 

enough to keep up with the marathon. 

People in audience were shouting out 

amounts they would donate if so and 

so hit a Hat Trick on the next round or 

not. Then they'd pit the players against 

each other in the spirit of competition 

in order to fill that donation bowl to 

the rim. Just an exciting display of 

affection for the children benefitted by 

the Make A Wish Foundation. 

Each player established their 

own sponsors, some bringing over 

$600 to the table to support the cause. 

Sporty's donated 10 cents for every 

bullseye thrown during that 11 hour 

stretch. Donations came flying in all 

day long from players, sponsors, audience 

members, everywhere. What an 

incredibly touching gesture, one after 

the other. 

Meanwhile, the entire back half 

of the bar was stuffed with items for 

auction. There were UW ice chests, remote 

control airplanes, 2 full-sized dart 

boards, adirondac chairs, golf bags, spa 

kits, on and on, so many items up for bid. 

And bid they did. Off the hook! 

All in all, Flight's raised over 

$6,000 for the Make A Wish Foundation 

and set a world record in soft tip darts to 

boot! Now that's a successful day. 

Special thanks to all the players 

of course, to Lucky and Ty of Flights, 

their staff, the score-keepers who 

worked tirelessly recording every 

single dart thrown, Dan who emcee'd 

the event, and everyone who came out 

to represent and support these guys. 

Thanks especially to all those sponsors 

who donated their time, money, and 

auction items. This was truly a community 

effort and worthy of record. 

When the dart board read 69, 

Steve Roth slowly steps up to the 

board. The levity of the moment was 

not lost on anyone in the room. It was 

as if the entire bar stood paralyzed, 

staring, unable to exhale. Steve 

throws a S19, and you could hear 

the angels sing when his second dart 

sailed through the air and landed perfectly 

in the center of the board to take 

out the game of 300,001. A sea of faces 

explode with applause and jubilation. 

Players hugged each other, high-fives 

all around, literally jumping for joy. 

Just a fantastic culmination to an 

event that we were all proud to be a 

part of and one that will live forever 

in our memories. 

Despite all of the days success, 

camaraderie, and human spirit, in 

the final tally, among the thousands of 

darts recorded, there were three questionable 

entries that would ultimately 

jeopardize the setting of a legitimate 

world record that day. Therefore, the 

players will once again come together 

under more quiet circumstances, without 

that blasted stage that had them 

buckling at the knees after 11 straight 

hours, and do it all over again, and 

this time without a doubt.

ago, a tradition was 

borne. It was up to 

the girls to bring 

forth (young); give 

birth to: to bear a 

child. But this time 

it was a girl's-only 

party. And you'd better like to play 

darts, because 22 years ago, a few 

means Cat Fight at the Cactus Moon 

Saloon in Everett, off 128th St. exit 

I-5. Well, New Years Day, 2011 would 

prove to be another fantastic day of 

lady-darts as expected. 

Teresa Hestkind, Coordinator, 

was loose and friendly, fun and 

whimsical all day long. She was in 

a great mood and kept track of the 

team signup and tournament charts 

of course. 

and Renton came up with an exiting 

3rd place finish - congratulations to 

Trish and Anita on a great day on the 

boards! They each snagged a trophy 

and some cash. 

This set the stage for the final 

match that day to determine this 

year's champions. Mary and Angie, 

Flights Pub, would go to battle with 

Charissa and Sara, Cloud 9. Mary and 

Angie pulled it out to become crowned 

Champs of the 22nd Annual 2011 Cat 

Fight! Way to go guys, tearin' it up! Of 

course, huge props to Charissa and 

Sara for a strong 2nd place showing. 

Everyone was showered with love and 

gifts and stuff. What a day at the office! 

Great shooting to everyone and 

thanks for coming out to support the 

house that supports you. 

No matter where my little feet 

may carry me, there is always someone 

in the room who's played darts 

at the Cactus Moon at one time or 

another. More frequently than not, let 

me just say.

outweigh the trophy and the cash 

both! Teams of women will travel 

from far off lands to attend and hopefully 

come home with the title of Cat 

Fight Champions. Well ladies, there's 

a new sheriff in town, actually two.

were many, many shots, and I'm not 

referring to darts, but dart shots too,

Pied Piper

The Pied Piper Pub on Meeker in 

downtown Kent is a long, narrow bar 

with the dart room way in the back. 

Getting there requires some 

navigation of the multitudes of bodies, 

turning shoulders this way and 

that, sliding through the crowd. Once 

in the dart room, there’s more room 

to stretch out. Four dart boards line 

the easterly wall, with room for two 

more. Pied Piper’s owner, Bobby says 

they’re considering bringing in those 

two boards soon if things continue the 

way they’ve been going. 

Since taking over the dart coordinating 

responsibility at the Pied Piper, 

Miles Norman has injected the bar 

with a surge of fresh faces and eager 

dart enthusiasts. He’s still building 

The staff seems a bit surprised by 

the sudden growth of the darts since 

Miles’ insertion, but they do a good job 

of getting to everyone in the room on 

a timely basis. 

Bobby says the pizzas are the 

bomb here, and served up until 1am, 

along with the rest of the menu, if 

there’s a demand. They’ve put an 

emphasis on the food, which is good 

quality and well-priced. 

Pied Piper is proud to hold the 6th 

highest team-count for leagues in the 

area at 16. Quite an achievement after 

having just started with Medalist.

These Parity Draw tournaments 

have been gaining steam over the past
