receptive to supporter ownership, in their case it took three or four<br />

years to create the current positive relationship with the County<br />

Council. Having such a large strategic partner also then gives other<br />

people and businesses confidence – ‘people think that if the County<br />

Council works in partnership with the club, then why shouldn’t they’<br />

Brentford have been able to pr<strong>of</strong>it from their supporter community<br />

owned status by becoming the first club in the Football League to<br />

win the <strong>Business</strong> in the <strong>Community</strong> ‘<strong>Community</strong> Mark’ – a British<br />

standard <strong>of</strong> community engagement. Donald Kerr thinks this is<br />

linked to them being a supporter-owned club, because it is an<br />

acknowledgement <strong>of</strong> the work they do within the community and<br />

how they interact with it. Only 40 companies in the country have this<br />

mark, most <strong>of</strong> which are large blue chip companies. The only other<br />

football clubs to have achieved this status are significantly better<br />

resourced than Brentford, namely Blackburn, Liverpool, Rangers<br />

and Hearts.<br />
