The trend of Bring your own device (BYOD) is having a serious impact on organisations
who wish to deploy mobility solutions that cater for both employees and guests to the
business over a single network. Whether the solution is to provide a chargeable or free
internet application service or to enable segmentation within the network of types
of users, the increased demand is driving businesses to invest heavily in the latest
generation of WLAN infrastructure solutions.

What is BYOD
BYOD is where an organisation creates a policy or
offers a service which allows employees in business,
guests in hospitality and students in education to
bring their own devices such as smart phones or
tablets to use in the organisation environment to
complete their daily work. This has been driven
by the massive uptake in tablet and smart phone
technology that we all use today, which in turn has
meant that more and more individuals are carrying
multiple devices that require access to the internet
and their own organisational resources.
Implementation of a BYOD Solution
There are a number of considerations when
deploying a BYOD solution on the positive side
the organisation can save money as it is not
now always investing in the latest technology.
As consumers we are more likely to invest in the
latest tablets or smart handsets and will want
to use them for work as well as at home. It also
enables employees and students to use their
device of choice which again encourages usage.
On the negative side is the issue of bandwidth –
an organisation needs to invest in the right switch
and WLAN mobility solution to cope with the
increased volume of devices joining the network.
Then finally is the management of the applications
and the implementation of a security policy. The
Business needs to ensure that physically guests
are separated and employees who use their own
devices have the appropriate applications and
security policy in place should their device be
stolen or compromised in some way.
The Switch Infrastructure
Starting with the infrastructure the switch and
WLAN network needs to be able to cope with the
significant increase in the devices connecting,
associating and being securely authenticated to
the business network. The demand for more and
more bandwidth for mobility solutions means
that the default standard for the switch network
has become Gigabit Ethernet technology with
Power over Ethernet for WLAN AP deployment.

and regular network users receive. This has created
a real surge in demand for the higher performance
WLAN 802.11n products. In addition bandwidth
businesses need to segment and manage
networks. Many organisations simply want the
extra speed and range that 802.11n delivers for
the latest applications such as media streaming
and IPTV however a lot are also taking advantage
of the dual-band capability to segment wireless
networks and provide dedicated bandwidth to
their own staff. This can be seen by the growth
of both N technologies in the business market
place.
Application Security
The Issues of users bringing and connecting
their own device is most affected in the SMB
environment. Typically in a hospitality or
education scenario the guests and students
are physically separated from the staff or
teacher networks. In the mixed environment
the issues are to do with the policy and
protection of the end point device as it is
connected to the network. Employees need
to have password protected devices and
ideally be able to wipe the device remotely
if necessary in the event of the device being
lost or stolen. The wireless network should
always be setup to use a secure wireless
protocol such as WPA2-Enterprise which offers

More Power for Your Network
With a total of four new switch models ZyXEL offers high speed and high power for
networking by supporting the latest Gigabit IEEE 802.3at standard. This new standard
– also known as PoE+ – can support up to 30 Watt PoE power per Port.

IEEE802.3at PoE
POE (Power Over Ethernet) technology has
enabled many companies to power up their
access points/IP Phones, IP Surveillance Cameras
and many more devices using the Ethernet cable
itself. So, one cable carries both data and power,
simplifying installation and maintenance.
But there is a limit to the maximum power that
can be supported by IEEE 802.3af PoE technology.
It can provide a maximum of 15.4W of power with
a minimum assurance of 12.95W. This is sufficient
for powering many commonly used network
devices.
More and more devices start to require higher
power than what is supported by the POE
technology. For example – PTZ Cameras, 802.11n
Access Points, IP Video Phones, etc.
The IEEE 802.3at (also known as POE+) standard can
provide 25.5W of assured power and a maximum
power of 34.2W. POE+, like POE it requires two
pairs of cables to be used for data transmission and
two pairs to be used for power transmission in an
Ethernet (Cat 5+) cable. The IEEE 802.3at standard
is backward compatible with POE enabled devices.
Four New Switches Supporting IEEE 802.3at
Following the latest demands for modern Networks
ZyXEL offer three new switch models supporting
the IEEE 802.3at.
GS1910-24HP and GS1910-48HP are web managed
switches with 24/48 Gigabit ports. They are cost
effective solutions for SB and SMB installation using
the latest chipset technologies and supporting
more features than any other device in this
category.
The GS2200-8HP is a full managed switch with 8
Gigabit ports and IEEE 802.3at. It is the best choice
for small PoE installations and special vertical like
Hospitality, IP Surveillance and Education using
smaller quantities of powered devices in one
location.
The new GS1100-8HP is the first unmanaged
switch supporting the IEEE 802.3at standard.
Together with its 8 Gigabit ports the switch is
the ideal choice for easy and cost effective PoE
deployment in SB networks. The GS1100-8HP will
be available in Europe from October 2012.

Protection. The IEEE 802.3af PoE standard is an
extension to the IEEE 802.3 10Base-T 802.3u,

Lower Installation Costs and Time
The ZyXEL PoE switches can work with other PoE
standard-based devices such as wireless access
points, VoIP phones and CCTV IP surveillance
cameras without the need for separate power
supplies, since the Ethernet switch provides the
necessary power. Consequently, the installation is
much easier without the need for new installations
of electrical power sources both externally for
CCTV cameras and internally in the ceiling for
wireless access points.
Flexible and Scalable Solutions
PoE devices can be easily installed and relocated
without any need for additional AC power wiring.
This is very important for network devices like
wireless access points, VoIP phones and IP
surveillance cameras, which may be installed in
places where power sockets are not convenient
or available. Furthermore, management becomes
easier with PoE devices deployed on the network;
for instance, the switch can turn off or reset a
connected device directly if the latter needs such
attention. When the network becomes more
complex and more network devices are being
added, it is easy to integrate more switches by
simply plugging in RJ-45 Ethernet connectors.
The switch automatically detects PoE-compliant
devices and offers the appropriate power level
in a safe and easy way. ZyXEL’s PoE products offer

Today, the main drawback of deploying PoE
switches is the power supply detecting mechanism:
regardless of the actual power consumption
status, the switch typically reserves 15.4 W even a
connected device requires a much lower amount
of power. ZyXEL’s intelligent PoE provides the
exact power level the device actually needs with
auto-detection.
When the power consumption amount of a
connected device is detected, ZyXEL’s intelligent
PoE automatically reserves for it. For instance, if
the power consumption of each power device is
7 W (the average for IP phones and wireless access
points is 5 to 7 W), a ZyXEL PoE switch, providing
a total of 200 W, supports as many as 28 devices
(200 W/7 W). The intelligent design increases
the potential amount of connected devices and
delivers a better ROI for businesses.
Centralized Power Management
As another way to maximise network availability,
the power monitoring and management features
