CrossRoads – Easter 2011 Organ Project The organ project is reaching its climax. The organ will arrive at St. Catherine’s in the next couple of weeks and the final preparations for the last two large-scale Organ Project events are taking place. 5C Art Exhibition An art exhibition to support the Organ Project. 5 local artists, some very well known to members of St. Catherine’s, present art works around the theme of creativity, creator, create, creation and creature in the Haus der Katholischen Kirche, Königstr. 7, Stuttgart. The exhibition opens with a Vernissage on Friday 6 th May at 18:00, preceded from 17:45 by music from Benjamin “Pops” Wilson and his vibraphone. On Thursday 12 th May at 16:00, Jim Palik will talk on the topic of “What is photographic art and how is it done”. On Monday 23 rd May at 18:00, Yvonne Kendall and Henning Eichinger will talk on “Artichokes, hearts and other strange things”. The exhibition will culminate in an art auction on Saturday 28 th May. A programme of activities will begin at 12:00 and the auction 8 will take place at 17:00. During the exhibition raffle tickets will be on sale for the price of ten Euros. First Prize will be the centre piece of the exhibition “Orpheus sings to the birds” by John Fowler. Organ Blessing and Inaugural Concert. We are happy to announce that we have virtually completed our fund-raising, successfully! We have also finished all the building construction necessary to set this organ on a proper and attractive organ loft under the rose window. The organ [Gill, Cardiff Organ Works] is in the final stages of renovation at the workshop of master organ builder Michael Mauch. While we don't know the exact date the truck will pull up in front of the church to start unloading pipes, we do expect it to arrive here from Schwaebisch Hall in early May. So... it is my pleasure to extend to you a most cordial invitation to attend our Organ Dedication and Blessing on Pentecost Sunday, 12 June 2011, at 17:00 in the Katharinenkirche [St. Catherine's Church]. The Rt. Rev'd. David Hamid, Suffragan of the Diocese in Europe, and the Rt. Rev'd. Joachim Vobbe, retired Bishop of the Old Catholic Church's Diocese of Germany will officiate. Following the ceremony Andrew Dewar will present the inaugural concert on the new St. Catherine's organ. Andy, originally from England, is a member of St. Catherine's, a former student of the Stuttgart Musikhochschule, winner of numerous international competitions, and currently based in Paris, France. A Reception for Friends, Visitors, and Parishioners will come immediately after the concert. Crossroads – Easter 2011 The Good Samaritan is alive and well. Anyone with children will know the feeling we had when Julius suddenly said to us: “Where’s my camera” Well, he said it in German actually. It didn’t help that we were sitting in a gondola on the London Eye big wheel 300 feet above the Thames at the time, so our chances of doing anything were zero at the time. Bags were turned out, brains racked and the conclusion come to that he had probably left it in the booking hall. The crowded booking hall. On a busy Bank Holiday. Already an hour earlier. So it was without much hope that we retraced our steps. While I reported the loss to the customer services desk and filled in a form, the others hunted through the huge booking hall. Nothing of course. We had just given up when a voice said: “Excuse me, but have you lost a camera” When Renate replied that we had, the owner of the voice gave a beaming smile and held out what was easily recognizable as Julius’ camera. Now, there is nothing unusual in someone returning something to its owner. But there was something special about this: As I said, Julius had lost the camera at least an hour earlier, before we had embarked on our ride. The young man who had found it, Leo, a tourist from Washington, explained that he had looked at the pictures to identify us and then gone round and round all that time in the hope of recognizing us! He had been on the point of giving up and was making one last circuit of the hall when he finally found us. His intention was, he said, to search for us on the Internet via Facebook (something I would never have thought of). No sermon needed. HE IS RISEN INDEED! Rev. Louis N. Grier, Missionary to Japan 1948-1982: Christ is alive today. Jesus took the form of a servant and worked for the release of the captives; for human dignity, for freedom from all forms of slavery. Divine liberating activity continues today whenever and wherever people are called to be whole and free, courageous and fully human. We do not need to go back twenty centuries to the empty tomb to prove that Christ is alive; if he is at work now, he was raised. As we witness the work of liberation in our midst, we must confess, “He is raised! He is alive in us!” The River Without Bridges: an encounter with the Japanese Buraku, 1986, Buraku Liberation Center.
