The Vicar writes …
As most of you are aware, I left Stuttgart on Easter Monday for a short
holiday in Spain. Some people thought I went to “recover” from the rigors
of Holy Week and Easter. Not true. Holy Week and Easter is my favourite
time of year. It’s what I live for. I went to Spain to visit an old friend from
Louisiana who was there for an academic conference. He comes every two
years for these conferences which move around to different cities each time.
I enjoy being able to visit different places in Europe, but I was glad this
conference was in Madrid. My little Tex-Mex Spanish allows me to travel
fairly stress-free in Spain. Madrid is a lovely city; but I also took advantage
of some day trips outside the city. The Spanish country side with rocky
outcroppings and unending rows of olive trees was both dramatic and
evocative. For me it evoked memories of the Man of La Mancha, Don
Quixote and his long-suffering manservant Sancho Panza, roaming the
countryside to be chivalrous and noble. Cervantes, the author of Don
Quixote has a memorial statue in Madrid’s Plaza d’Espana. As I stood there
gazing up at his monumental sculpture, I felt I could relate to the fictional
Don Quixote, who with all the best intentions in the world, ended up
jousting windmills.
Churches can also end up being a little “Quixotic” ... chasing off after
windmills … fighting battles that are silly or off message.
Many years ago, the Episcopal Church had a battle over whether or not
women had to cover their heads when coming into a church building. It is
hard now even to remember why anyone thought this a battle worth
fighting. I suspect it was about how strictly we should require other people
to adhere to Pauline instructions in the Epistles. In a parallel to the then
prevalent political theory called “The Domino Theory”, there were those in
the church who worried that if we allow women freedom in millenary
things, where will it end
But did it affect the preaching of the Gospel Did it advance the unity of
the church, or the building up of the Kingdom No. It was a “windmill,”
not worth jousting over. It was a distraction which stole energy which
could have been invested in much more worthwhile efforts.
It makes me wonder if on our local level we aren’t guilty of the same thing.
Are we focused on doing the Lord’s work … Or are we wasting energy
jousting with our own windmills
Each year, I find that Easter and Holy Week help me focus on the most
important foundational ideas and events of our Christian faith. These are
definitely not windmills! They deserve our most sincere attention.
CrossRoads – Easter 2011
No worldly windmill should be allowed to
distract us from giving ourselves fully to the
Passion, Sacrifice, Resurrection, Ascension, and
Glorification of our Lord.
When fully focused on these foundational things
we find good reasons for doing what we do, …
even those things which might otherwise look a
bit “windmill-ish”.
A case in point is the up-coming city-wide
American Days festival. St. Catherine’s will once
again sponsor two events, the Used English
Book Sale/ Bake Sale, and the American-German
Gospel Concert. Are these windmills We are
not an “American Church,” so participating in
American Days, could be questioned. We are
not a bookstore nor library … but a church. We
hardly ever use Gospel music in our own
worship. I agree that superficially they could be
seen as windmill-ish. So why do we do these
events
We do them, I hope, 1] to preach the Good
News in a way that will catch the attention of
people who do not normally hear our sermons
and 2] to raise money to extend the Lord’s
compassion far and wide.
Many people in Stuttgart, even Englishspeaking
people, do not know we exist. By
participating in events with a large and visible
impact in the city, we hope to show people that
there is an Anglican Church in Stuttgart. People
may come attracted by books or music, but if we
do it right they end up learning about our
church, meeting our community, hearing about
our generous and loving Lord and possibly even
deciding to join us in our life together. Any
money we will make will be given to worthy
causes. These events could become a windmill if
we ignore the spiritual basis behind them; … or
could be seen as Good News events when Christ
is present in all we do.
Our Christmas Bazaar, the MS Fundraiser, the
Organ Project, Church Fellowship picnics,
English Music Halls, Organ Concerts ... all these
things can be seen as tools to bring grace to the
world. So we press on beyond the four walls of
the Church venturing out “chivalrously” into
the world. … sometimes biting off more we can
chew, sometimes dreaming an Impossible Dream,
always guided by a hope that lives can be
changed, souls can be saved, and that God and
Humanity can be drawn closer together.
If you ever see me, anxious, stressed out, or
looking distracted by what seems to be a
“windmill”, please remind me that I am not Don
Quixote. Remind me to avoid jousting with
windmills and to concentrate my energies on
the many Gospel imperatives to be done. And
don’t allow yourself to be drawn into windmill
ministry either. It is so easy to get distracted by
works, hobbies, travel, or the endless driving of
children from one activity to the next. Keep the
focus of Holy Week and Easter central to your
understanding of what it means to be Christian,
foundational to your personal faith.
It is my prayer that the Holy Spirit will give us
the vision to recognize windmills for what they
are … and to see beyond them to Jesus, the true
goal of our life-long quest.
Introducing the new PCC
For those who don’t know our new council
members and warden here is a little bit about
them. (Previous editions of CrossRoads give you
glimpses into the lives of other council members
– see the website for back issues.)
Alexander Schmalz
Dear friends,
It is an honor to me to
work for God and his
people in the position to
which you have elected
me. Let me tell you how I
came to be member of St.
Catherine’s Church in
Stuttgart:
It was a late night in October 2009 and I was
desperate again. I was searching the Internet for
a church where I would fit in. Since my return
from England I was back at the Youth Church I
had been part of before. It was great then, but I,
or the Youth Church, had changed
Let’s jump back right to the beginning. I was
born and raised in Stuttgart. My parents are
Christian and so I grew up in the Evangelical
Church of Württemberg. Being quite musical,
my mum introduced me to a big choir where I
learned to sing Bach chorals.
My teens went by with youth work at the
YMCA and an apprenticeship in catering with
ARAMARK. It was a job opening at a Radisson
SAS Hotel, which finally brought me to London
Stansted Airport, England. At the time, I was a
committed Christian and had always lived in
my comfortable Christian bubble. No nightclubs
– I had my youth service, no drugs – I had my
bicycle and music. I thought nothing could ever
stop me.
Then came many humbling steps. I was struck
to realize, that many of my colleagues didn’t
know Christ and that their lifestyle was very
different to mine. We worked endless hours
through nights and weekends. I went clubbing
with them, had wild parties and spent evenings
chatting together. Still, life felt shallow, like a
dream you might wake up from anytime,
something that wasn’t real or a nightmare.
After a year I swapped jobs. I was hungry for
knowledge and Sundays off to rest and go to
church. Slowly I learned about different
denominations and their approach to painting
the same picture of Christ in different styles. I
finally found this diverse Anglican Church “St.
James the Great”. Going to different churches at
the time, the pastor there would still welcome
me very warmly every time. She would listen to
my struggles and say things like: ”I can’t tell
you where you belong – you will have to find
out yourself. But I can tell you that I am
extremely happy every time you come through
these doors. They will always be open to you”. I
found a house group and many friends in this
church over the next three years.
After four years in England, I went back to
Stuttgart in 2008 to go to technical college. The
Youth Church in Stuttgart had grown
massively. Old friends would still recognize me,
but were very busy. I felt lonely in the crowd – I
couldn’t deal with the German aloofness, the
cold. I decided to change.
So this is how I got to this Saturday night in
Oktober 2009. I learned that there is an Anglican
Church in Stuttgart. The Service would be at
9 the next morning! Anyhow, I got there and
was welcomed by Ken, lifting the backpack of
my shoulder saying: “Let me take that burden
off you!” I felt at home.
I just wish that we all can find this sense of
belonging to the body of Christ in St.
Catherine’s Church. I wish that you and I can
grow on the journey together and be a blessing
to each other and those around us.
Best regards,
This is Laura’s first time to sit on the St.
Catherine’s Parish Council. It was upon the
birth of their first child in that the family began
to look for a church that would combine
elements of their respective Catholic and
tolerant and welcoming English-language
community. They became members of St.
CAECG Christian Education Weekend
St. Catherine’s Church, Stuttgart - Friday 1 st July
- Saturday 2 nd July.
Each year the CAECG (Council for the Anglican
and Episcopal Churches in Germany) offers an
opportunity for anyone connected with the
Anglican and Episcopal Churches in Germany
to participate in a Christian Education Weekend.
This year it will take place at St. Catherine’s
Church in Stuttgart and will be led by Rev. Dr.
Robin Stockitt from the Anglican Church in
Freiburg.
The theme will be looking at the question of
‘Honour and Shame’ in selected biblical texts
and finding connections with our own culture
today. Honour and Shame are perhaps forgotten
or at least hidden aspects of biblical culture yet
they inform and shape the way in which much
of the Bible was written.
The weekend will include a mixture of talks
with plenty of opportunity for discussion.
If you are interested in attending please register
with Robin Stockitt (stockitt@t-online.de).
CrossRoads – Easter 2011
Annual General Meeting
Minutes of the Annual General Meeting, 2011 of St Catharine’s Church, Stuttgart
held on Sunday, 10th April 2011 at St Catharine’s Parish Centre.
Thirty-one members of the Electoral Roll were present.
The chair was taken by the Chaplain, the Reverend Kenneth Dimmick.
1. Opening Prayers were said at 1.15 p.m.
2. Apologies for absence were received from the Kerr family, Mrs Anja Hübel, Mrs Renate Jarman, Mrs
Kim Newberry, Mrs Andrea Haller, Mr Kingstone Kesse, Mr Christoph Meyer, Dr Stefan Müller &
Mr Gregg Walsh.
3. The Minutes of the 2010 A.G.M. had already been made available in written form. There were no
matters arising from them. Their acceptance was proposed by Mr Alexander Schmalz, seconded by
Mrs April Jenkins, and passed without dissent.
4. The reports on the various areas of parish life had already been made available in written form. The
Chaplain thanked the members of the Church Council for their work during the year, especially Mr
Edward Wagner, who had taken over from Mr Nate Ramquist as Treasurer after the latter’s
departure, and who had been confronted with the necessity to cut back severely on the Council’s
financial plans, as Item 5 would reveal. He thanked also a number of helpers who did a great deal of
other voluntary work for the congregation, in particular Mrs Jackie Wellhäußer and Ms Hilary
Norman, who had succeeded in the Augean task of clearing out the St Catharine’s archives, Mrs
Lauris Prince-Schroeter, who kept order in the office twice a week, Mrs Frances Buttle, who, sitting
in the middle of all things, skilfully spun the church website, Mr John Thompson, who faithfully
carried out the sacristan’s duties, including the continued provision of the service sheets, and Mr
Stefan Bernhart, who had triumphantly coordinated the fundraising efforts for the organ project.
5. The Treasurer, Mr Wagner, had the unenviable task of introducing accounts which revealed a deficit
of €42,807, instead of the deficit of €22,400 - already higher than originally planned - which the 2010
Budget had envisaged. The deficit was caused by a catastrophic fall in the “Bank Transfer” item, that
is to say the amount of income derived from regular pledged giving. A number of members of the
church who had been particularly generous contributors had been transferred away from Germany
during the year. The results of the latest stewardship campaign had been so meagre that the 2010
Budget was forced to show a potential deficit of even closer to €43,000, even though the Chaplain
had said that he would be prepared to do without the increase in his salary which was in fact owing
to him. The Treasurer drew attention to the two largest items on the Expenditure side, viz. “Cost of
Priestly Services”, €44,170 (i.e. Chaplain’s salary plus on-costs), and “Building expenses”, €29,475 (i.e.
rent and overheads for the Bakery). The first, he said, was clearly taboo. But we might have to think
hard about the second. At this point the Chairman opened the item to general discussion. In reply to
a question he stated that the Bakery was used as follows: Sunday, all day, parish activities; Monday,
late afternoon, Girl Guides; Tuesday, morning, office hours; Wednesday, evening, Bible study and
supper; Thursday, morning, office hours; Saturday, various sporadic activities. It was clear that the
facility was under-used and that we were not getting enough value for the close on €2500 which it
cost us monthly, and a number of suggestions were made as to how to improve matters: getting in
other groups, running our own business from the front rooms, setting up a parent-and-child centre,
sharing the facility with another group in a similar position to ourselves, withdrawing into the back
rooms and allowing the Hochstetters to let the front ones, and letting the flat to a student or similar.
The prospect of giving up the Bakery gave rise to general dismay, although the Chaplain emphasised
that even without it parish life could still take place; with all services now at 11.15 it was much easier
to work round the Old Catholics’ needs, the side room was normally available at other times
5
CrossRoads – Easter 2011
anyway, and there were venues in Stuttgart suitable for large-scale events, merely needing to be
booked well in advance. The Treasurer, Mr Wagner, and the Bookkeeper, Mrs Wellhäußer, pointed
out realistically that at the present rate of depletion the money, including the reserves, was going to
run out by the next A.G.M., and pleaded for a swift solution which would be sustainable. The
Chairman pointed out that the year’s accounts called not merely the Bakery but even the Chaplain
into question; at the moment we were in no position to even hire a replacement priest, let alone
sustain a parish centre in addition. The congregation, he said, had about 65 “pledging units”, and to
cover present expenditure each unit would have to give an average of €1500 per annum; the average
at the moment was €660. However, it became evident that many of the members at the meeting had
been shocked into a mood in which they were prepared to make greater efforts and greater sacrifices
in order to preserve something like the status quo. Great responsibility devolved on the members of
the new Church Council, who would be meeting in a week’s time to consider these matters.
6. As Auditor for the coming year, Mrs Prince-Schroeter was proposed by Mr Sloan, seconded by Mr
Thompson, and elected without dissent.
7. For the offices of the two Churchwardens, Mr Eric Jarman was proposed by Mr Zeller and seconded
by Mr Okutubo, and Mr Alexander Schmalz proposed by Mrs McNamara and seconded by Mrs
Miller. At this point Mrs Prince-Schroeter proposed, and Mrs Miller seconded, that nominations be
closed. This motion having been passed unanimously by the meeting, Mr Jarman and Mr Schmalz
were duly elected, without dissent.
8. For membership of the Church Council, the following were nominated:
Mr Joseph Okutubo, prop. Mr Badertscher, sec. Mr Jarman
Mr Christopher Sloan, prop. Mrs Wellhäußer, sec. Mrs Prince-Schroeter
Mr Edward Wagner, prop. Mr Badertscher, sec. Dr Buttle
Mr Stefan Müller, prop. Mr Zeller, sec. Mrs Wellhäußer
Mr Brian Johnson, prop. Mr Thompson, sec. Mrs Billard
Mr Gregg Walsh, prop. Mrs Wellhäußer, sec. Mr Jarman
Mrs Laura Wong, prop. Mrs Buttle, sec. Mrs Faust
Mrs Hazel d’Sousa, prop. Mrs Billard, sec. Mr Thompson
Mrs Frances Buttle, prop. Mr Jarman, sec. Mrs Wellhäußer.
As there were thus nine nominations, Mrs Miller proposed, and Mrs Billard seconded, that nine
members rather than eight should be elected to the Council. This motion was passed by thirty votes
to one with two abstentions. The nine were then duly elected without dissent.
9. As our local representative in the ACK (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Christlicher Kirchen), Mr Scott Page
was proposed by Mr Badertscher, seconded by Mrs Johnson, and elected without dissent.
As our local representative in the Württembergischer Arbeitsgemeinschaft christlicher Frauen für
den Weltgebetstag, Mrs Lauris Prince-Schroeter was proposed by Mr Badertscher, seconded by Mrs
Wellhäußer, and also elected without dissent.
10. As our two delegates to the Archdeaconry Synod (it was explained that our size entitled us to one
only, but that we always elected two, who alternated), Mr Eric Jarman was proposed by Mrs Prince-
Schroeter and seconded by Dr Kulok, and Mr John Thompson proposed by Mrs Wellhäußer and
seconded by Mr Okutubo. Both were elected without dissent.
11. There was no other business.
12. Closing Prayers were said by the Chaplain at 3.15 p.m.
C. Sloan (Acting Secretary)
Organ Blessing and Inaugural Concert.
We are happy to announce that we have
virtually completed our fund-raising,
successfully! We have also finished all the
building construction necessary to set this
organ on a proper and attractive organ loft
under the rose window. The organ [Gill, Cardiff
Organ Works] is in the final stages of
renovation at the workshop of master organ
builder Michael Mauch. While we don't know
the exact date the truck will pull up in front of
the church to start unloading pipes, we do
expect it to arrive here from Schwaebisch Hall
in early May.
So... it is my pleasure to extend to you a most
cordial invitation to attend our Organ
Dedication and Blessing on Pentecost Sunday,
12 June 2011, at 17:00 in the Katharinenkirche
[St. Catherine's Church]. The Rt. Rev'd. David
Hamid, Suffragan of the Diocese in Europe, and
the Rt. Rev'd. Joachim Vobbe, retired Bishop of
the Old Catholic Church's Diocese of Germany
will officiate.
Following the ceremony Andrew Dewar will
present the inaugural concert on the new St.
Catherine's organ. Andy, originally from
England, is a member of St. Catherine's, a
former student of the Stuttgart
Musikhochschule, winner of numerous
international competitions, and currently based
in Paris, France.
A Reception for Friends, Visitors, and
Parishioners will come immediately after the
concert. It would be a great honour for us if you
could reserve that date, plan to be with us, and
join in the festivity of this great day.
Is it possible With God, all things are possible!
Ken Dimmick +
P.S. Could you reply to me if you plan to come,
so we can plan accordingly. vicar@stcatherinesstuttgart.de
Crossroads – Easter 2011
The Good Samaritan is alive and
well.
Anyone with children will know the feeling we
had when Julius suddenly said to us: “Where’s
my camera”
Well, he said it in German actually. It didn’t
help that we were sitting in a gondola on the
London Eye big wheel 300 feet above the
Thames at the time, so our chances of doing
anything were zero at the time. Bags were
turned out, brains racked and the conclusion
come to that he had probably left it in the
booking hall. The crowded booking hall. On a
busy Bank Holiday. Already an hour earlier.
So it was without much hope that we retraced
our steps. While I reported the loss to the
customer services desk and filled in a form, the
others hunted through the huge booking hall.
Nothing of course.
We had just given up when a voice said:
“Excuse me, but have you lost a camera”
When Renate replied that we had, the owner of
the voice gave a beaming smile and held out
what was easily recognizable as Julius’ camera.
Now, there is nothing unusual in someone
returning something to its owner. But there was
something special about this: As I said, Julius
had lost the camera at least an hour earlier,
before we had embarked on our ride. The
young man who had found it, Leo, a tourist
from Washington, explained that he had looked
at the pictures to identify us and then gone
round and round all that time in the hope of
recognizing us! He had been on the point of
giving up and was making one last circuit of
the hall when he finally found us. His intention
was, he said, to search for us on the Internet via
Facebook (something I would never have
thought of).
No sermon needed.
HE IS RISEN! HE IS
RISEN INDEED!
Rev. Louis N. Grier,
Missionary to Japan
1948-1982:
Christ is alive today.
Jesus took the form
of a servant and worked for the release of the
captives; for human dignity, for freedom from
all forms of slavery. Divine liberating activity
continues today whenever and wherever
people are called to be whole and free,
courageous and fully human. We do not need
to go back twenty centuries to the empty
tomb to prove that Christ is alive; if he is at
work now, he was raised. As we witness the
work of liberation in our midst, we must
confess, “He is raised! He is alive in us!”
