HAVING AN EDGE IN
THE CORPORATE WORLD
MEN
In today’s corporate world, men’s grooming is just
as important as that of their female counter-parts.
You can’t control all the misconceptions people have
up about you in an office environment, and you should
never aim to please others at the cost of your dignity.
There does exist, however, a fine line between getting
people to see the real you and conforming to what you
think they want or expect to see. It’s all a balancing act
of holding one’s self perceptions while keeping a clear
view of who you are.
Here are some tips on how to look your best and possibly even
stand out in the 9 to 5 crowd!
SHOES
It’s perfectly ok to wear something other than black
leather shoes – you can also switch styles to loafers,
round toe or the trendy pointed shoe. If you’re wearing
a light coloured suit, you can even spring for a
tan-coloured shoe. The idea is to be different and
comfortable especially if you’re on your feet a lot
during the day.
WATCH
A watch is probably the first and last piece of jewellery
a man should wear. Men’s watches are stylish when
they bear a large face – these designs have stood the
test of time (anyone watched a lot of Steve McQueen
movies) If you can’t afford the Patek Philippe, opt for
a reputable but affordable watch.
HAIR
Everything seems to be in! – from bald to long locks
(if you can keep these in good shape) A designer
stubble is still in – indeed some businessmen have
made this their trademark!
When styling your hair try to stand out by avoiding
the conformist look. Whatever you do, try to keep a
professional appearance.
WRITING
Despite all the personal digital assistants, a classy
pen still says class about you – it might make signing
on the dotted line a touch more elegant.
SMELL
A first meeting can be rather daunting for some.
Having a unique scent at a business meeting can
make for a good first impression. Just don’t overdo
it! There’s nothing worse than giving all around a
headache! Also watch out what colognes/after shave
you use when it’s very hot, as some smells change in
sweltering weather .
BRIEFCASE
You can still look good even if you have to use a
briefcase. Choose wisely from : the slim portfolio,
the classic briefcase and the messenger bag with
strap over the shoulder. Try out different ones before
deciding to splash out, and take note of your shape
and size.Black is an all time favourite, with a tan
leather bag coming a close second just to add
sleekness to your attire.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
– WATCH YOUR BODY
LANGUAGE
Be sure to nod approvingly when in agreement and
keep arms in an open position (i.e don’t cross them)
to indicate your willingness to listen and accept new
ideas. Assert your self-confidence, and speak up on
issues that interest you and concern you.
