RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
a) Structural Materials for Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure:
My collaborators and I have been doing research directed at optimizing the material
properties of low cost, earthen masonry blocks. Little has been done to investigate the
performance of structural systems currently being built using this technology. Part of this
work has focused on quantifying the impact of hygrothermal loads on masonry. Using NSF
funding and UF Matching funds, my collaborators and I have also used advanced computer
visualization (SEM/ EDS analysis) to quantify chemical changes in the microstructure –
information that can be used to promote the efficient use of resources through optimizing the
performance of bio-based materials. The work quantifies moisture-related, chemical changes
which we are using to develop a database of the materials’ response to hygrothermal loads
that can be used to develop a durability prediction model for natural fiber reinforced, low cost,
cement-stabilized bricks, geopolymer binders that incorporate secondary inputs and natural
pozzolans. The use of these materials reduces the demand for cement (cement production is
the third ranking producer of CO in the world after transport and energy generation). We have
used computer visualization to design bio-based, compostable polymers that can be used as
vapor barriers for brick walls. Scaling up the extraction of earth and natural pozzolans would
result in land use conflict as the locals with suitable soils that are also ideal for agriculture and
also affects the watershed. My collaborators and I are developing spatial maps harmonizing
these competing needs. I will augment our proposed decision making framework using agentbased
modeling techniques such as the cellular automata.
I have also been assessing system level issues are being investigated as part of a collaborative
NSF project directed at enhancing wind-resistance of earthen masonry walling systems.
Page 1 of 17 15/03/13

The collaborative research is experimentally and theoretically quantifying the structural
resilience of a novel fiber reinforced earthen masonry system that is engineered for load
scenarios relevant to high wind regions.
I have written several proposals and secured NSF awards. I am scaling up to the large,
multi-million dollar, multi-institutional, international awards. Two notable examples are
highlighted below. Based on the strong reviews our team obtained, we are cautiously
optimistic about securing a large scale award for research in sustainable and resilient
materials.
invited for Full Proposal submission. I was one of the three presenters during the
Reverse Visit to the NSF.
a) Agent-based Knowledge Management and Information Technologies:
Internet-enabled systems are adopted to improve productivity and reduce cycle times in
various operations by collecting and providing the right information. A significant number of
the forecasted gains remain unattained partly due to the lack of interoperability across
different applications in different organizational units. The seamless flow of knowledge and
information is further impeded by the ever increasing problem of information overload
compounded by advances in the generation real-time data using sensors, robotics, the
emerging smart grid and other associated intelligent infrastructure systems. Using fellowships
and internal grants, my research has demonstrated the potential for integrating information
from heterogeneous sources using intelligent agents exemplified in a construction e-business
prototype application.
Existing construction industry-specific, agent-based applications are Agent-Centered Multi-
Agent Systems (ACMAS) in which interaction between agents is designed around the internal
mental state of an agent, the relationship between these states and its overall behavior. This
interaction protocol makes it difficult for agents implemented by different developers to
communicate. In prototype application, I address this limitation using an organizationcentered
Multi-Agent Systems (OCMAS) approach in which agent interaction is designed
around macro-level concepts such as ‘organizations’, ‘groups’, ‘communities’, ‘roles.’
Page 2 of 17 15/03/13

Despite the significant amount of effort that has been invested in building domain ontologies
for virtual design and construction applications, the progress has been slow. A primary area of
need is “the development of appropriate mechanisms and tools for information extraction and
document annotation.” In a prototype application, we realized this desired mechanism using
intelligent agents. We extended this into a proof-of-concept for a highly interactive virtual,
learning environment, populated by dynamic objects and avatars. The complexity and
heterogeneity inherent in an intelligent virtual learning environment call for an open and
flexible architecture that allows a smooth integration of components developed using different
technologies.
My collaborators and I are applying machine learning techniques to specific engineering
design problems. For example, I was Dr Ian Flood’s Co-investigator in a project applying
Genetic Algorithm to Truck Loading problem. In collaboration with North Eastern University
researchers, we are developing an intelligent control system that adapts the tint level in the
electrochromic glass to strike a balance between energy consumption, room temperature, and
brightness level. Working with University of Nairobi professors, I have also applied agentbased
modeling to the provision of sanitation services.
I am currently serving as the Secretary for ASCE Global Center for Excellence in Computing
and also a CO-Chair of CIB TG83 for ebusiness in Construction.
I have published in highly regarded journals. ASCE Journal are highly regarded by many
scholars and generally considered as the leading in the world in many of the engineering
disciplines. Construction Management and Economics is a leading construction journal.
Submissions are anonymous double-blind review by four referees. ITcon is a CIB journal
which in 2005 merged with the IT-AEC journal. AEDM is a CIB-endorsed journal.
Architectural Engineering and Design Management is an international journal which provides
high quality technical papers on current developments (information, process, and
management) within the construction industry on a world-wide basis. Journal for
Sustainability is a multidisciplinary e-journal whose publishing activities published are
supported by internal editorial boards comprising more than 2000 active scientists including
several Nobelists.
