5.3 The United Nations University Geothermal<br />
Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Program<br />
The Geothermal Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Program of the United Nations University (UNU-GTP) was<br />
established <strong>in</strong> Icel<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1978 when the National Energy Authority (NEA) became an<br />
Associated Institution of the UNU. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1979, a group of professional scientists <strong>and</strong><br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eers from the develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> transitional countries have come to Icel<strong>and</strong> each<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g to spend six months <strong>in</strong> highly specialized studies, <strong>research</strong>, <strong>and</strong> on-the-job<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>geothermal</strong> science <strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. All of them are university graduates<br />
with practical experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>geothermal</strong> work <strong>and</strong> permanent positions at energy<br />
agencies/utilities, <strong>research</strong> organizations or universities <strong>in</strong> their home countries.<br />
The UNU Fellows have full access to the <strong>research</strong> facilities <strong>and</strong> the multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
<strong>research</strong> environment of the NEA <strong>and</strong> the Icel<strong>and</strong> GeoSurvey. There is an excellent library<br />
specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> energy <strong>research</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>development</strong> (<strong>in</strong> particular <strong>geothermal</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
hydropower) with some 12,000 titles <strong>and</strong> subscriptions to 140 journals. Most of the<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>research</strong> supervision of the UNU-GTP has been conducted by <strong>geothermal</strong><br />
specialists of the Geoscience Division of NEA. This division was separated from<br />
the NEA <strong>in</strong> 2003 to become a new government-owned <strong>in</strong>stitution, Icel<strong>and</strong> GeoSurvey.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>tegration of the UNU Fellows with the specialists <strong>and</strong> the <strong>research</strong> atmosphere<br />
will cont<strong>in</strong>ue as <strong>in</strong> previous years. The UNU-GTP closely cooperates with the<br />
University of Icel<strong>and</strong> (UI). Staff members of the Faculty of Science <strong>and</strong> the Faculty of<br />
Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g have been among the key lecturers <strong>and</strong> supervisors of the UNU Fellows.<br />
In May 2000, a cooperation agreement was signed between the UNU-GTP <strong>and</strong> the UI<br />
on MSc studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>geothermal</strong> science <strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. This is designed for UNU Fellows<br />
who have already completed the traditional six-month courses at the UNU-GTP,<br />
which constitute 25% of the MSc program.<br />
Specialized tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is offered at the<br />
UNU-GTP <strong>in</strong> geological exploration,<br />
borehole geology, geophysical exploration,<br />
borehole geophysics, reservoir<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, chemistry of thermal fluids,<br />
environmental studies, <strong>geothermal</strong><br />
utilization, <strong>and</strong> drill<strong>in</strong>g technology. The<br />
aim is to assist develop<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>and</strong><br />
Central <strong>and</strong> Eastern European countries<br />
with significant <strong>geothermal</strong> potential<br />
to build groups of specialists that cover<br />
most aspects of <strong>geothermal</strong> exploration<br />
<strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>development</strong>. All<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>ees are selected by private <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />
with UNU-GTP representatives<br />
as they visit the countries concerned to<br />
become acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with <strong>geothermal</strong><br />
