1. Introduction of <strong>Solar</strong> <strong>Cell</strong><br />
1.1. Vision of PV<br />
Today, mankind is using petroleum as a main energy source because it is cheap<br />
<strong>and</strong> easy to use. However, due to the limit of petroleum reserve, the production is<br />
continuously decreasing <strong>and</strong> it is endangered to be exhausted in 50 years. The<br />
price is forecasted to be around USD 200 per barrel. As the petroleum is used as<br />
a main energy source, serious problems including air pollutant emission <strong>and</strong> global<br />
warming due to the greenhouse effect not alone the oil price increase are caused.<br />
In this situation, Kyoto Protocol was adopted in December 1997 to control the<br />
emission of CO2 which is the main cause of global warming, <strong>and</strong> Korea is planning<br />
to be included in CO2 control countries from 2013. Threrefore, in this situation, a<br />
policy to support diversification of enery source is immediately needed <strong>and</strong><br />
securing the technology of renewable energy such as solar energy, wind energy<br />
<strong>and</strong> hydrolic energy is emerging as an important task to be fulfilled as soon as<br />
possible at national level. <strong>Solar</strong> cell is attracting attention because it doesn’t have<br />
any problem of pollution <strong>and</strong> it can be supplied infinitely.<br />
PV is element <strong>and</strong> system technology that convert solar energy into heat <strong>and</strong><br />
electric energy to use, <strong>and</strong> usually means power generation using solar cell. It is<br />
not only a technology that can produce high value added energy from<br />
environment friendly natural energy, but also is expected to greatly contribute to<br />
the realization of clean <strong>and</strong> wellfaire society through the independance of national<br />
energy supply. And, every member of the nation can have independant<br />
environment friendly energy source with solar energy. Another value of solar<br />
energy utilization is to help people enjoy comfortable lives in clean environment.<br />
Through PV, distributed power generation installed in houses <strong>and</strong> buildings which<br />
can be competitive compared to existing power generation method, large saled<br />
power generation, power generation for space <strong>and</strong> telecommunication satellite are<br />
possible, not alone small scaled independent energy system. To make it possible,<br />
we should improve performance of existing crystalline silicon solar cell <strong>and</strong> purse<br />
thiner, cheaper solution. Also, technical development is required to make cheaper<br />

1 Gas Phase Diffusion Method<br />
In gas phase diffusion method of impurities on the surface of silicon, the process<br />
differs depending on the substance of the impurities which can be one among<br />
solid, liquid <strong>and</strong> gas. This gas phase diffusion method is used in the most cases<br />
among impurities diffusion methods in making solar cell. In this method, gas<br />
carrier containing impurities to be coated are coated on the exposed subsrate of<br />

silicon wafer in a high temperature coating furnace <strong>and</strong> diffused by thermal<br />
treatment. To compare the different form of impurities to be prepared, gas source<br />
gas phase diffusion method as seen in [Figure 1-2-4], liquid source gas phase<br />
diffusion method in [Figure 1-2-5], <strong>and</strong> solid source gas phase diffusion method in<br />
[Figure 1-2-6]are shown like below. That is, what makes difference among the<br />
methods is in what form the impurities’ material is prepared prior to be diffused in<br />
carrier gas. In some cases of solid source methods, specific carrier gas is not used<br />
<strong>and</strong> impurities are coated on the surface of wafer <strong>and</strong> diffused after they are<br />
evaporated by heat <strong>and</strong> pressure by filling the wafer cosist of impurities between<br />
wafers which are to form n-p junction layer. Most of cases, boron nitride (BN)<br />
wafer is used for p-type impurity.<br />
2. <strong>CIGS</strong> <strong>Solar</strong> <strong>Cell</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />
2.1. Structure of <strong>CIGS</strong> <strong>Solar</strong> <strong>Cell</strong> <strong>and</strong> Operating Mechanism<br />
In basic structure of <strong>CIGS</strong> thin film solar cell, there is basic PN junction structure.<br />
On each sides of the structure, there is a metal electrode used as cathode<br />
electrode <strong>and</strong> a transparent electrode as anode electrode.<br />
In terms of the thickness of each layer, Mo layer used as a cathode electode is<br />
4000 ~ 10000Å, <strong>CIGS</strong> layer used as P layer is 1.5~2μm, CdS layer as N layer is 500<br />
Å, ZnS layer is 500Å, <strong>and</strong> AZO transparent layer is 1~2 μm thick.<br />
CdS layer is used for an electric buffer of optical absorber <strong>and</strong> transparent<br />
electrode, <strong>and</strong> furthermore, it prevents the damage of <strong>CIGS</strong> thin film when the<br />
transparent electrode is sputter coated in the plasma atmosphere. For transparent<br />
electrode part, ZnO thin film containing some % of Al2O3 is used in the most<br />
cases. And to block the leakage current between buffer layer <strong>and</strong> transparent<br />
electrode, very thin pure ZnO thin film of 500Å thickness is used.<br />
For subsrate, sodalime glass substrate is typically used. Since sodium substance<br />
included in the sodalime glass helps the crystalline growth of <strong>CIGS</strong> layer <strong>and</strong><br />
performs positively in increasing the efficiendy of the cell, more makers are using<br />
soladime substrate which is inexpensive <strong>and</strong> commonly used in window glass.<br />

2.2.1. Comparison of Production Process with Crystalline Si <strong>Solar</strong> <strong>Cell</strong><br />
Single crystalline silicon wafer solar cell production consists of ingot process, wafer<br />
process, cell process, <strong>and</strong> module process, which are 4 completely different<br />
processes, <strong>and</strong> it has 22 processes in total. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>CIGS</strong> solar cell in<br />
thin film type is produced far simpler process consist of 9 processes.<br />
Since the cell linking process of thin film solar cell is made in simple process of<br />
monolithic patterning <strong>and</strong> PCO coating process, this process is made by cell maker<br />
together with other processes not by a separated module maker. However, in<br />
solar cell industry where silicon wafer is used, since the characteristics of above<br />
mentioned cell <strong>and</strong> module process are completely different, the cell is transported<br />
to separated module makers to proceed the process. 하지만 Silicon wafer를 이용<br />
하는 태양 전지 산업에서는 상기 셀과 모듈 공정의 성격이 전혀 다르기 때문에 별<br />
도의 모듈 업체로 셀을 운반하여 공정이 진행된다. And since ingot <strong>and</strong> wafer has<br />
different process characteristics, each different maker performs production. This<br />
causes higher transportation expenses <strong>and</strong> supply condition of each maker<br />
becomes more important.<br />

3.1. Japan<br />
3.1.1. Showa Shell Sekiyu<br />
3.1.1.1. Structure of <strong>Solar</strong> <strong>Cell</strong> <strong>and</strong> Process <strong>Technology</strong><br />
Currently, there are 2 major <strong>CIGS</strong> solar cell makers in Japan. Both of Showa Shell<br />
Sekiyu <strong>and</strong> Honda Soltec is applying same technology in <strong>CIGS</strong> layer formation by<br />
using sputtering technology <strong>and</strong> thermal treatment technology in H2Se gas<br />
atmosphere. Particularly in the case of Showa Shell Sekiyu, they are applying the<br />
technology in which precursor (Cu, Ga, IN) is sputtered before multiple substrates<br />
are thermal treated at the same time in a furnace with gas atmosphere where<br />
H2Se is diluted. After that, the atmosphere is changed again into a gas where H2S<br />
is diluted <strong>and</strong> then, it is thermal treated again at much higher temperature (about<br />
550℃).<br />

In terms of buffer layer, they are using specially developed technology from ZnS,<br />
O, <strong>and</strong> OH layer in CBD method in order not to use Cd, which is a harmful<br />
substance.<br />
In terms of transparent electrode layer, BZO layer, which has good light<br />
transmittance despite of low electric conductivity, is coated by MOCVD technology.<br />
The metal organic source used in here is less expensive <strong>and</strong> has better coating<br />
quality in step coverage compared to sputtering.<br />

Although PV industry didn’t draw much attention until 2007 in Korea, global PV<br />
market showed rapid growth since 2004. PV installation market accomplished high<br />
growth with support by each nation’s government. The market size increased from<br />
1.6GWp in 2006 to 2.4 GWp in 2007. In 2008, the market size of Spain <strong>and</strong><br />
Germany were 2.3GWp <strong>and</strong> 1.5GWp, respectively. Total global market size in 2008<br />
was 5.5 GWp with 130% growth year on year.<br />
Especially in Spain, even though the FIT support capacity was limited to 1.2GW in<br />
2008, actuall yearly installation in the feverish market was 2.3 GW, which is 1.2GW<br />
more than limit capacity supported by FIT from the government.<br />

With the rapid increase of dem<strong>and</strong> for PV, solar cell production also rapidly grew.<br />
Total production of solar cell in 2007 was 4.4GW, with 69% increase Y/Y, <strong>and</strong> in<br />
2008, it was 8.1GW with 84% Y/Y. Especially in this period, as Chinese makers<br />
entered the market with aggressive production facility boost <strong>and</strong> low price strategy,<br />
global solar cell production rapidly increased from 2007 <strong>and</strong> Chinese market is<br />
sharing over 30% of global solar cell market.<br />
Worldwide PV market accomplished rapid growth by systematical support by each<br />
government as many countries designated PV as green industry <strong>and</strong> industry of<br />
growing engine for the next generation. Share of top 10 makers of solar cell was<br />
62% in 2006. The share decreased to 53% in 2007 <strong>and</strong> 45% in 2008. Considering<br />
that the market share of the top ranked maker Q-<strong>Cell</strong>s is just 7%, competition<br />
becomes tough as more makers worldwide enter the solar cell business. In this<br />
