Erwartungshorizont für eine gute Leistung: Students should refer to aspects worked out under assignments 1 – 3. They are expected to deal with the following points: • the author of “Just like the rest of us” is aware of the worries many people in the US / the southwest have concerning Latino immigration (e.g. security, language, lifestyle, economic / social capacity for further intake of Latino immigrants) • … assumes (stereo-) typical American attitude: optimism, can-do mentality, the American Dream is alive, myth of the melting pot • T.C. Boyle paints a gloomy picture (hardly any hope) • … refers to individuals and their illusions / disillusionment / failure • … uses satirical elements (he exaggerates in order to warn / he stimulates awareness) • possible conclusion: both authors want to see a positive development: one offers a positive interpretation of present developments and appeals to the reader with an interest in what he believes are generally accepted good (typically American) values and encouraging lessons from history. T.C. Boyle probably intends to provoke his readers to think about the issues raised in the novel.
