Erwartete Schülerleistung
Erwartungshorizont für eine gute Leistung:
• Basic meaning of the title explained in the subtitle (assimilation):
Latino presence no reason to be worried, neither in the
USA as a whole nor in California
• While lines 1–31 seem — at first glance — to contradict the
idea suggested in the title and the subtitle, the second half
of the text confirms what is suggested by the title
• reference to the idea of the “melting pot“ (l. 39): content of
the pot is changed by immigrants (this has always been the
case in US history)
• whether ethnicity is seen as a problem or not depends on
the point of view from which the issue is regarded
• Latinos are expected to be Americanised (all aspects of culture,
language included) and welcome this process.
Erwartungshorizont für eine ausreichende Leistung:
• basic meaning of the title is explained in the subtitle (assimilation)
• second half of the text confirms what is suggested by the
title
• reference to the idea of the “melting pot“ (l. 39)
• Latinos are expected to be Americanized
Erwartungshorizont für eine gute Leistung:
• quotation leads into the subject (novel about the problem of
integration) in a subjective (fictional) and startling way (final
question in the quotation)
• in the sense of created truth the quotation reminds the readers
of sights and events possibly not unfamiliar to them, thus
feeds their imagination
• establishes a rather worrying contrast (there seem to be
masses of Latinos; Latino presence seems to have
permeated everyday life) to the more comforting message of
the title, thus invites the reader to read on to gain certainty
Aufgabe I Leistungsfach Nachschreibtermin
• first two questions invite the reader to consider them his own
questions (identification)
• the last question is rather discomforting: indication that all is
not well in the country
Erwartungshorizont für eine ausreichende Leistung:
• quotation leads into the subject (novel about the problem of
integration)
• … establishes a contrast to the more comforting message of
the title
• … invites the reader to identify with the issues raised in the
quotation
3.
Erwartungshorizont für eine gute Leistung:
Students are expected to write a well-ordered text with appropriate
attention to detail and focus on three main aspects:
CONTENT
• author does not ignore / belittle problems mentioned by the
so-called “worriers“
• … puts the problems into perspective (balanced view)
• … adduces examples of regions and people which / who
stand for Americanisation
• photo could suggest: people look different, but outward appearance
does not give too much reason to be worried; caption
refers to the working of the “melting pot“: Americanisation
is possible
STRUCTURE
• succinct headline (suggesting: nothing to worry about — but
what is it that one could be worried about) and interesting
opening paragraphs capture the reader’s interest.
• problems are dealt with but considered to be results of
mainstream America’s approach to the topic
• the last part of the text stresses the favourable development
of Latino immigration (examples of successful Latinos)
• conclusion : question of the dominant language in the
South-West — for many Americans most worrying — is
dealt with in a positive way
STYLE
• mirrors attitude (tone): author’s aim (to show that Latino immigration
is not really anything to worry about but to feel at
ease with) is supported by stylistic (and other) devices:
• these make the text readable (e.g. sentence formation,
idiomatic usage)
• they show language-creativity (Mexifornia), and humour
(e.g. Ms Lopez shouldn’t have dumped Ben Affleck, ethnicity,
set against a nice bottom)
• they signal competence (quotations and supporting facts)
• they deflate opposing views (“worriers“) and boost his own
30%
Erwartungshorizont für eine ausreichende Leistung:
Students are expected to
• refer to the clarity of the author’s basic message
Aufgabe I Leistungsfach Nachschreibtermin
• point out that the photo and its caption seem to support the
view communicated by the title / subtitle (settling in)
• refer to the author’s knowledge (supporting facts, quotations)
• … his objective and interesting style
• touch upon aspects of structure
4.
Erwartungshorizont für eine gute Leistung:
Students should refer to aspects worked out under assignments
1 – 3. They are expected to deal with the following points:
• the author of “Just like the rest of us” is aware of the worries
many people in the US / the southwest have concerning Latino
immigration (e.g. security, language, lifestyle, economic
/ social capacity for further intake of Latino immigrants)
• … assumes (stereo-) typical American attitude: optimism,
can-do mentality, the American Dream is alive, myth of the
melting pot
• T.C. Boyle paints a gloomy picture (hardly any hope)
• … refers to individuals and their illusions / disillusionment /
failure
• … uses satirical elements (he exaggerates in order to warn /
he stimulates awareness)
• possible conclusion: both authors want to see a positive
development: one offers a positive interpretation of present
developments and appeals to the reader with an interest in
what he believes are generally accepted good (typically
American) values and encouraging lessons from history.
T.C. Boyle probably intends to provoke his readers to think
about the issues raised in the novel.
Erwartungshorizont für eine ausreichende Leistung:
students are expected to
• point out the positive outlook expressed in the text at hand
• relate this to typically American attitudes
• refer to the pessimistic picture painted by T.C. Boyle
• relate this picture to the idea that all is not well in the US
• conclude by pointing out that one and the same state of
affairs may lead to different approaches, either to emphasize
hope or to provoke.
