Assessment example<br />

A test on pole splicing methods for scaffolding included 25 multiple choice questions and short answer<br />

questions based on <strong>the</strong> content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> learner workbook distributed at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course.<br />

Learners had 40 minutes to complete <strong>the</strong> test in exam conditions.<br />

After comparing <strong>the</strong> LLN demands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vocational competence with those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> assessment task, <strong>the</strong><br />

trainer found that <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> writing skill and <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> assessment were not in keeping with <strong>the</strong><br />

types <strong>of</strong> LLN tasks and <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> LLN tasks found in <strong>the</strong> vocational competence or found on-<strong>the</strong>-job, e.g:<br />

• reading and language demands on-<strong>the</strong>-job – simple<br />

• reading and language demands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> assessment task – unfamiliar and challenging.<br />

As a result <strong>of</strong> this investigation <strong>the</strong> assessment task was altered, requiring <strong>the</strong> learner to:<br />

• demonstrate knowledge <strong>of</strong> three pole splicing techniques including related OH and S<br />

• provide orally to <strong>the</strong> assessor considerations associated with <strong>the</strong> techniques, in a simulated workplace.<br />

This alternative assessment allowed for a greater range <strong>of</strong> learners to demonstrate competence and was<br />

more closely aligned to work practice.<br />
