Tisha’s Market Update
Ph. 403-869-9730
tisha@findyourhomeincalgary.ca
My Perspective......
Inventory of active homes in Calgary this spring has not
been this low in five years and we are seeing more
completion for buyers. Additionally sales have declined over
2% from this time last year due to the lack of availability of
inventory.
We have yet to see the extreme sellers markets of 2006 and
2007, however, we are trending towards that sellers market.
Where is Tisha
City Hall Ward 9
City Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra • ward09@calgary.ca • 403-268-5330
A happy May to my Ramsay neighbours! A special thanks
goes out to the volunteers who went out for the Bow River
Cleanup.
This will be my last newsletter update to you as your
Alderman. May 31 marks the official start of the campaign
blackout period and, in the interests of fairness to all candidates
in the October Municipal Election, my communications
will shift from ‘Elected Official’ to ‘Candidate’. It is
my hope that your CA Board will continue to publish my
monthly reports through October, as well as those from all
candidates in the election - maybe we can get a great debate
going! In the spirit of promoting debate, I want to spend this
report reviewing the work I’ve done over the last two and a
half years - both in terms of big-picture transforming government
work at City Hall, as well as the in-the-trenches work
addressing the issues in Ramsay.
I’ve been an enthusiastic supporter of driving Mayor
Nenshi’s Transforming Government initiatives such as
Cutting Red Tape through to establishing criteria-based
decision-making. I am excited about Transit’s Route Ahead,
the new Framework for Growth and Change and how we are
overhauling the planning process in our City with NextCity.
Pilots on how we deploy our civil service such as Strong
Neighbourhoods initiatives are making excellent progress
towards putting our Neighbourhoods First. Finally, I am
engaged in reworking our relationship with the Province so
Calgary is better equipped to take care of Calgarians through
a strong City Charter. There is a great deal of truly transformative
work underway and I’m really pleased to report that
Ward 9 is at the forefront.
Together, we have made great progress in Ramsay.
Initiatives such as the Natural Step Community Visioning
project, the introduction of stricter rules on
home based massage parlors, pedestrian access
cards for the Zoo and advocating for the residents
of Ramsay to see Lilydale leave the neighbourhood
are some examples. Exciting things are happening
you on them.
Enily Firmston (Girl Guide)
This weekend, the Girl Guides went hosteling, and of course,
a death march was involved! They hiked a total of 14 km in
one day, hiking all the way to a mine. The mine smelled of
sulphur and had an old mine cart. The lamp house was very
small and covered in graffiti. The best was the word DOOR
painted right over the door. The girls hiked through all kinds
of weather, as usual – rain, snow, sunshine, cloudiness, wind,
and tiny pellets of hail. It was a long hike, and at the end,
everyone went to the candy store! The candy store definitely
smelled better than the mine. There were cool Japanese candy
like weird marshmallows and chocolate bars with cream
cheese. Defiantly weird. There was also Shakespeare insult
gum – so cool! After everyone made it back to the hostel,
they had a murder mystery party, along with a dinner of lasagna,
shepherds pie, mini quiche, mini potato puff pastries,
salad, and pudding for dessert with gummy worms. Everyone
had a good time. On Sunday the girls went swimming, after
a morning of packing and getting ready to leave. All the girls
went home exhausted and had a great sleep.
Betty Whitlock
Nancy Janovicek
Chatting with Betty Whitlock is like taking a walking tour of
the last 86 years of Ramsay’s history. As she told me the story
of her life, she explained where people lived, when families
moved and built new houses, how marriages brought together
community families, where the local grocers used to be, and
how industries have changed over the years.
Betty was born at 1032 21st Ave. in 1926. Her family
was among the first residents in the area. Her grandparents
moved from Idaho Falls in 1912, and her grandparents lived
next door until her grandfather died and her grandmother
built a house near Colonel Walker School. Her father, Archie,
worked for the CPR and was a locomotive engineer when he
retired. He founded Forest Lawn
Power and Light Co. Ltd. with his
brother Frank. They erected the
power lines that prepared the area
for development.
Betty lived with her grandmother
for two years, and attended Colonel
Walker in grades 2 and 3. She has
spent the rest of her life in Ramsay.
When she was growing up, the
Alberta Box Factory was at the
Lilydale site. She recalls jumping
in the large piles of sawdust near
the factory: “It smelled great. Not
like Lilydale.” She attended Ramsay
School, but most of her friends
lived near St. Anne School, closer
to where she lived. Her father was a
friend of C. C. Snowden. He bought
Snowden’s daughter’s bike for her as
a treat for passing grade 6. When he
left Ramsay, Snowden sold his house
at 1014 20th Ave. to Bill Cummins.
Betty spent a lot of time there
because she was good friends with
Cummins thirteen daughters, friendships
that lasted their entire lives.
Betty is also interested in the
Cummins family because she worked at the Shamrock hotel
for twenty-six years. Bill Cummins moved from Ireland to
Calgary in 1901 to make harnesses for the Burns Factory, and
he opened the Shamrock Hotel in 1918, across from his harness
shop and the Shamrock Cafe. Betty and her sister Peggy
started working at the Shamrock during WWII, when they
were short-staffed because so many men were serving overseas.
She continued to work there as a clerk, bar server, and
upstairs maid after she was married.
Betty explained how “The Rock” became a popular spot to
imbibe green beer on St. Patrick’s Day. One day, Jim Creigh
(the pub’s manager who built his house at 1152 9th St.)
decided to put green food dye in the beer as a St. Patty’s Day
joke. For the first few years, the bartenders used an eyedropper
to put the dye into each patron’s complimentary beer.
This ended when the tradition caught on and Calgarians
flocked to the pub for green beer specially brewed by the
Calgary Brewing Company. When she worked there, Betty
drew cartoons to decorate the pub. She started drawing cartoons
when she was a young “for something to do rather than
sew or something like that.” When she retired, she drew this
self-portrait.
For many years, Betty nominated Bill Cummins for the
Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. He built a rink beside the hotel,
and Betty recalls that on the weekends it was packed with
hockey or lacrosse fans. Cummins sponsored the home team:
the CPR Trojans. The rink was torn
down shortly after Cummins died in
1933.
She’s witnessed a lot of changes
to the Stampede in her lifetime.
Every summer, her dad took them
up “to Scotchman Hill to watch the
Stampede and hit mosquitos.” Her
fondest memory of the Stampede
happened in the 1960s. On her way
to the show, she found a goofy old
cowboy hat and put it on. It blew off
before the rodeo was about to begin,
and when the policeman returned it
to her, he asked her if she was Buck
Shot’s mother. She doesn’t think
Buck Shot has ever lived Ramsay.
In 1948, Betty and her husband,
Joe Anderson, Jr., started to build
their house on the corner of 23rd
Ave and McLeod Trail. (She insists
that it’s McLeod, not Spiller. Check
the sidewalk at 24th Ave!) They first
met in grade one at Ramsay School.
But she doesn’t remember meeting
him until they were students
at Western Canadian High School
when he was dating her friend Jean
Murdoch. (She’s the daughter of Alice Murdoch, who founded
the first dance school in Calgary in the 1920s.) Betty and
Joe married in 1947, and rented houses on 20th and 23rd
Ave. while they were building their home. Joe built the house
with his father, Joe Anderson, Sr., who lived two doors down
on the other side of Double-Elle Bakery. He was a tile-maker
and had a kiln in the yard. He made the tiles that are still on
the front sidewalk of 821 23rd Ave, as well as Betty’s sidewalk
and front foyer.
Listening to Betty’s stories about growing up, working,
and raising her family in Ramsay deepened my appreciation
for our neighbourhood’s heritage. These family stories are a
rich source of Calgary’s history and weave the community
together.
Otter & Explorer News
Scouter Rick Ryan, 403-278-2547 • paddleeh@yahoo.com
It’s April and spring time in Calgary. The Otters are ready
to get out and look for signs of spring. ZAP ZAP ZAP what
is this on my e-mail Of our 2 Otter leaders one is out of
town and the other has to work. Time to pull one last trick
out of the back pocket. What’s our new motto STAND
READY. Time to take the Otters on a romp of the plus 15
down town. A quick e-mail to the Otter gang and the new
plan is set in motion. Parents and kids show at appointed
spot down town to find most of the buildings locked. When
you are a parent on a downtown street with a raft of Otters
you get motivated and find a way in. Just short of breaking
in. Now they are off wandering the city from the inside in
search of the elusive cows that are said to wander the plus 15’s
at night. We have it on good authority that the cows wake
up when everyone goes home and they wander the city until
folks come back in the morning. Unfortunately the way to
the cows is locked off and we have to save this for another
day.
Every once in a while a parent steps forward to help out
with the troop in a big way. We were ending our ski season
with a trip into Bryant creek cabin in Banff. We needed a
mom or at least a female presence on the trip. Zoe’s mom
Laura stepped up to the plate. Laura got the kids out for a
final ski before the big trip. 14 Km. in and out and up and
down hills. We think we are ready. It is April but in the high
country there is still lots of snow. We are ready for a great
adventure!
We left town in a dense fog on Saturday morning and
headed out to Canmore and climbed up past the Nordic centre
and around the Spray lakes to Mount Shark ski area. All
the way out there was almost no snow but as we got closer
the snow got deeper and Mount Shark turned into a winter
wonderland. Everyone bailed out of the cars and sorted gear
for the trip. Skiing with back packs is a new thing for everyone.
We do well with a good trail well track set up to the half
way mark. We did find a couple of hills which were more
of a challenge than we wanted. Some of us swallowed our
pride and walked down. Yes after a sprained knee and much
the same arm I am learning. What’s that about old dogs and
tricks The trail is soft slushy and one step off puts you up to
your thighs in snow. Try to get up in that stuff with a pack
on your back. We really started to slow down an we still had
4 K.M. to go. A decision was made to stash the skis and walk
the rest of the way. With the soft snow we were post holing
every so often but still making better time. We made it to the
cabin by 6:30 or so. The kids think it is heaven. The wood
is wet and the fire smokes but it is warm. The single burner
stove is fired up and supper is soon on its way. The girls have
chicken and noodle soup and they guys have chili. The chili
is great and not a word of how Scouter Rick burned it. 8:30
everyone is in the sack. 8:40 not a sound in the cabin. Maybe
the mouse that got into Anna’s snacks. The fire kept going all
night. We woke up to sunshine on the mountains and -5 C.
All is well. Laura hustles the girls up for a quick breakfast and
pack up. The boys Jacob and Matias help getting
water and sweeping up. We make a quick get
away by 9:30. The trail is hard and we are making
good time. We found our skis right where
we left them and carried on at a good pace but ever so much
slower. It has been a long grind. We are finally on good trail
and make a break for the end as the wind picks up. It has
been a long hard adventure but these are the ones that are
talked about for years to come. When you ask these kids in
years to come, remember Bryant Creek they will have stories
to share. For the others long will be forgotten the sleep over
or the video games on the couch.
Thanks Laura!
Ramsay: Love at First Sight
Kristina Eggen
I came to Calgary from Oslo, Norway, a little over two
years ago. People keep asking me; are you in oil and gas My
reply is always the same: No, I am in love. I’m in Calgary
because when you are struck with love, you follow your heart,
even if you have to cross the ocean and leave everything else
behind.
I have to admit it, though; coming to Calgary can be
somewhat a shock for a European. The sizes of everything are
overwhelming. The streets, the cars, the buildings. All is big;
stores and what you buy in them is at least 40% bigger than
where I come from.
I felt lost in an anthill. A very effective and functional anthill.
I was homesick.
That is – until I discovered Ramsay and Inglewood and fell
in love for the second time. My heart beat faster when I saw
the mix of old and new, big and small, rich and poor. It was
the blend that I had been missing so, and it was all what I
would call “human size”.
I love the small houses, painted in colours that make me
smile. The creativity that bursts through the garden and window
decorations is delightful. Even the houses that are tired,
worn out, almost falling a part have a story to tell and a message
to convey: Hey! Don’t forget! We’re not all able to live in
the mansions that pop up along the ridges and avenues!
Civic Affairs
Jenny Jensen
The Civic Affairs Committee has reviewed:
DP 2013-0604
Alberta Ave SE
This is for a single detached dwelling on a
corner lot. The committee did not support a relaxation of
the by-laws that would allow the developer to put the front
façade at the side of the house. Also, the committee did not
support a relaxation on the front setback.
DP 2013-0605
Alberta Ave SE
This is for a contextual semi-detached dwelling. The committee
did not support a relaxation because the plans do not
indicate a staggering of the units, and this does not conform
to the character of the neighbourhood.
DP 2013-0697 1709
8 Street SE
This is for a duplex requiring relaxations. The committee has
left this to the discretion of the City Planner and the developer
to resolve any issues.
DP 2013-0594 1118
9 Ave SE
This is for a secondary suite over a garage. The committee
has no comment since this development fits within the scale
of the neighbourhood.
They all belong here, in the microcosmos of Ramsay.
And the sounds… Oh, I enjoy the sounds of Ramsay. The
sounds of children laughing, couples discussing and hockey
players cheering. Birds warbling. These are the sounds that
find their way through my open window and tell me once
again; yes, there is a life out there. Get out! Go for a walk! Go
through the park or along the ridge! Walk by the river and
enjoy the smell of spring, or stroll down to 9th avenue and
get yourself a coffee! Explore the world of books, spices and
get inspired by creativity displayed in the galleries and the
recycle shop!
I love Ramsay and Inglewood. Not because it reminds me
of home, but because it reminds me of what a city truly is: a
pulsating, living organism that has its own story to tell. A true
love story.
