General Information 

University Overview 

Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national 

university in Chinese modern history. Peking University now consists 

of five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Medicine, 

and Information and Engineering. The University has 43 colleges 

and departments, and offers 105 undergraduate programs, 291 

graduate programs, and 249 doctoral programs. While still laying 

stress on basic sciences, the university has paid special attention to 

the development of applied sciences. In October 2007, there were 

14,170 undergraduates, 11,249 postgraduates and 5,979 doctoral 

candidates. There were also on campus approximately 2,587 longterm 

international students from 80 countries. Among them, there 

were 1,947 Degree-Seeking students. 

Peking University is also famous for outstanding research facilities 

and high qualifying teachers and researchers with extensive research 

interests and profound knowledge. Today the University has 5,568 

full-time faculties, of whom 1,577 are professors and 1,986 are 

associate professors, 52 academicians of the Chinese Academy of 

Science, and 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. 

At present, Peking University has 12 national key laboratories, 46 

state key laboratories, 2 national engineering research centers and 6 

affiliated hospitals and health centers. 

The Peking University library is the largest university library in Asia, 

with a collection of 7.7 million books, and Chinese and foreign 

journals and newspapers. The library also serves as a comprehensive 

modern information center. 

Peking University places great importance on academic exchange 

and cooperation with foreign universities, research institutes and 

multinational enterprises. She has signed agreements with more than 

200 universities in 50 countries and regions.

Study period and Academic Schedule 

The normal period of study for each program is as follows: 4 years for 

undergraduate degrees, 3 years (or in some cases, 2 years) for master's 

degrees, and 4 years for doctoral degrees. Students may, in particular 

cases, reduce or extend the duration of study upon application. 

Peking University divides every academic year into spring and 

autumn semesters, with the latter marking the commencement of the 

academic year. The autumn semester starts in September and ends 

in January of the following year while the spring semester begins 

in February and ends in June. There will be a winter and summer 

vacation every year. The summer vacation usually lasts 2 months and 

there are various summer vacation courses available for students. The 

winter vacation lasts 4 weeks and normally follows the schedule of 

Chinese New Year. 

Programs 

International students have the following options of study at Peking 

University: 

(1) Undergraduate or graduate degree-granting programs; 

(2) Visiting students program (non-degree granting) 

(3) Pre-university program; 

(4) Short-term language courses or Chinese studies programs. 

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, with valid 

passport, above the age of 18, and should abide by Chinese law and 

the regulations of Peking University. They should also respect Chinese 

social customs. 

Undergraduate program: Students are required to complete the 

curriculum between 4 to 6 years and fulfill the designated number of 

credits. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along 

with the bachelor's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree 

Committee. 

Master's Program: Students are required to complete the curriculum 

between 2-3 years, fulfill the designated number of credits, complete 

the master's thesis and defend of it in front of a panel of experts. 

Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with 

the Master's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree 

Committee. 

Doctorate Program: Students are required to complete the 

curriculum between 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill 

the designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the 

doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful 

graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree, 

according to the regulation of the Degree Committee. 

Senior Visiting Students Program: Candidates must have at least a 

Master's degree. Senior Visiting Students are normally supervised by 

a professor of the accepting college or department to conduct research 

in a specific subject. The program is one year, however, upon request 

the student may be considered for an extension. Upon graduation, 

the student will receive a certificate of achievement. 

General Visiting Students Program: Candidates must have 

completed at least one year of undergraduate study at their own 

university. The options are available for joining undergraduate courses 

or enhancing proficiency in Chinese language. 

Research Scholars: Candidate must have a doctoral degree or have 

the title of Associate Professor or higher. Research Scholars will be 

given access to the school's resources and be allowed to collaborate 

with professors of the accepting college or department to conduct 

specific areas of research. Most successful candidates have established 

prior contacts with the professors in their particular fields, anyone 

wishing to come for a Research Scholars is strongly advised to find 

a supervisor in advance. Research scholars enjoy flexible application 

dates and durations of research. The applications can be submitted 

anytime, and duration of study varies from one month, one semester 

to on year. 

Requirement of proficiency in Chinese language 

General Visiting Students are required to take the Chinese language 

proficiency exam after registration. Only those students whose results 

meet the standard are allowed to take specialty courses, otherwise 

they are suggested to study Chinese in the International College for 

Chinese Language Studies for one or two semesters. For those who 

have already received the certificate of the HSK (Hanyu shuiping 

kaoshi) level 6 or above, the Chinese language proficiency exam will 

be exempted. 

Senior Visiting Students and Research Scholars are not required to 

take the Chinese language proficiency exam, on the premise of no 

communication obstacles with their supervisor. 

Undergraduates, Master and Doctoral candidates are not required to 

take the Chinese language proficiency exam. 

Application Processing 

It takes approximate 8 to 10 weeks after the application deadline 

to receive the formal Letter of Admission. We may inform you to 

attend an interview or request additional materials according to your 

application process during this period. If you are accepted, we will 

send you the Letter of Admission and other relevant documents. To 

track the progress of your application please contact the International 

Students Division either by email or telephone. Due to our limited 

staff, we cannot reply promptly to all enquiries. 

Medical insurance 

Peking University’s regulations require that all international students 

must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period 

of study. Students are required to purchase the Comprehensive 

Insurance Plan of Foreign Students provided by Ping An insurance 

company on the day of registration, which has been recognized and 

recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Students who 

do not have valid medical insurance are not allowed to register. 

Accommodation information 

There are different types of housing facilities for international students 

at PKU. 

Due to the limited accommodation on campus, the Shaoyuan 

International Students Residences can only provide the house for

General Visiting Student Program 


An overseas student wishing to study at Peking University for 

up to a year but not for a degree may be admitted as a General 

Visiting Student. Candidates must have completed at least one 

year of undergraduate study at their own university. If your 

Chinese proficiency does not meet the required standard of 

your target course of study, you are suggested to study Chinese 

in the International College for Chinese Language Studies for 

one or two semesters before entering the department. 

Application prerequisites: Applicants must be non- 

Chinese citizens with a valid passport, above the age of 18 

and under the age of 45, have completed at least one year of 

undergraduate study at their own university.

Pre-University Program 


1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens above the age of 

18 and under the age of 25, and have attained a senior high 

school diploma (not from China) and an excellent academic 

record; 

2. Applicants must have attained an elementary level of 

Chinese, i.e. more than one year of full-time Chinese language 

training or having attained the certificate of level 4 or above on 

the HSK examination.

1. Applicants should first come in person with your valid 

passport to the Pre-University Program Office;

Short-Term Programs 


Program Introduction 

The short-term programs of Peking University for international 

students focus on two areas of study, Mandarin Language 

Training and China Studies. 

There are two methods for international students to apply for 

the short-term programs of Peking University: 

(1) Cooperation Programs, which are organized jointly by 

Peking University and a foreign university or educational 

institution; and 

(2)Individual Applications. Individual applications are 

reviewed separately. For Individual applicants, please 

refer to the Individual Application sections. Cooperation 

Programs are currently not available for individual 

applications.

goal of these programs is to provide more opportunities for 

international students to enrich their understanding of ancient 

and modern China. 

We are constantly exploring ways to partner with famous 

universities and institutions to enhance the quality of our 

China Studies Programs.

available for individual applications.

1. Any foreign school or institution interested in a joint 

program at Peking University may contact us directly to 

discuss specific terms of cooperation. 

2. Applicants may apply through the foreign school or 

institution working with Peking University. Applicants should 

fill out the International Student Application Form for Shortterm 

Studies at Peking University. Applicants should make 

sure that the original copy of the application form should be 

received by the International Students Division two months 

before class starts. 

B. Individual Applications: 

1. Individual applicants may ask for the International Student 

Application Form for Short-term Studies at Peking University 

directly from the International Students Division of Peking 

University. Applicants can also visit www.oir.pku.edu.cn and 

download the necessary application documents from the 

homepage of “International Students”. 

2. Application submission period: 

a) Spring Semester 2010 Programs: Applications for the 

limited vacancies will be accepted on a “rolling” (first-come, 

first-served) basis starting on Monday, November 2, 2009. 

b) Fall Semester 2010 Programs: Applications for the 

limited vacancies will be accepted on a “rolling” basis (firstcome, 

first served) basis starting on Thursday, April 1, 

2010.

Note: Students who would like to withdraw from the program 

should submit their request before the registration at the 

beginning of the semester. Upon approval, the tuition fee can be 

refunded according to the school regulation. 10% of the tuition 

fee will not be refunded to cover the administrative fees (RMB

fee for the current semester will not be refunded. 

C. Estimated living costs: approximately 1,200RMB per 

month, medical care and personal activities excluded. 

General Curriculum 

A. Class hours: Monday to Friday, four hours per day, twenty 

hours per week, with extracurricular activities on Saturday. 

B. Mandarin course: 

1. Mandatory courses: Intensive Reading, Spoken Chinese, 

Pronunciation, and Listening Comprehension & Video 

Course. 

2. Elective courses: Students can select electives from a variety 

of topics such as Chinese Folklore, Translation, Rhetoric, 

Writing, Newspaper Reading, Classical Chinese, Selected 

Readings from Contemporary Chinese Literature, and others. 

All courses aim to improve the student’s the ability to use 

Mandarin in real-life circumstances. 

C. Class arrangements according to Mandarin proficiency: 

Instruction is divided into elementary, intermediate, and 

advanced levels. Students are arranged according to the results 

of the Mandarin placement exam after registration at the 

beginning of the semester. Class size is approximately fifteen 

students per class. 

D. Chinese Cultural Activities 

1. Shadowboxing / Tai Chi (Taijiquan), Chinese painting, 

Chinese calligraphy, visits to traditional Beijing residential area 

(hutong), etc. 

B. King-size rooms in Shaoyuan Building (on-campus): with 

color TV, telephone, refrigerator, Internet access, bathroom, 

and air conditioner; two persons share one room. 

C. Student rooms in Posts and Telecommunications Hotel: 

with air conditioner, color TV, telephone, bathroom, and 

room-cleaning service, about 5 minutes away from Peking 

University campus by foot. 

D. Student rooms in Zhongguanyuan Global Village PKU: 

with color TV, telephone, Internet access, air conditioner and 

bathroom. 

In addition, international students are allowed to live 

off campus; however, they are responsible for their 

accommodations and are required to register at the local police
