<strong>General</strong> <strong>Information</strong><br />

University Overview<br />

Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national<br />

university in Chinese modern history. Peking University now consists<br />

of five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Medicine,<br />

and <strong>Information</strong> and Engineering. The University has 43 colleges<br />

and departments, and offers 105 undergraduate programs, 291<br />

graduate programs, and 249 doctoral programs. While still laying<br />

stress on basic sciences, the university has paid special attention to<br />

the development of applied sciences. In October 2007, there were<br />

14,170 undergraduates, 11,249 postgraduates and 5,979 doctoral<br />

candidates. There were also on campus approximately 2,587 longterm<br />

international students from 80 countries. Among them, there<br />

were 1,947 Degree-Seeking students.<br />

Peking University is also famous for outstanding research facilities<br />

and high qualifying teachers and researchers with extensive research<br />

interests and profound knowledge. Today the University has 5,568<br />

full-time faculties, of whom 1,577 are professors and 1,986 are<br />

associate professors, 52 academicians of the Chinese Academy of<br />

Science, and 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.<br />

At present, Peking University has 12 national key laboratories, 46<br />

state key laboratories, 2 national engineering research centers and 6<br />

affiliated hospitals and health centers.<br />

The Peking University library is the largest university library in Asia,<br />

with a collection of 7.7 million books, and Chinese and foreign<br />

journals and newspapers. The library also serves as a comprehensive<br />

modern information center.<br />

Peking University places great importance on academic exchange<br />

and cooperation with foreign universities, research institutes and<br />

multinational enterprises. She has signed agreements with more than<br />

200 universities in 50 countries and regions.<br />

Study period and Academic Schedule<br />

The normal period of study for each program is as follows: 4 years for<br />

undergraduate degrees, 3 years (or in some cases, 2 years) for master's<br />

degrees, and 4 years for doctoral degrees. Students may, in particular<br />

cases, reduce or extend the duration of study upon application.<br />

Peking University divides every academic year into spring and<br />

autumn semesters, with the latter marking the commencement of the<br />

academic year. The autumn semester starts in September and ends<br />

in January of the following year while the spring semester begins<br />

in February and ends in June. There will be a winter and summer<br />

vacation every year. The summer vacation usually lasts 2 months and<br />

there are various summer vacation courses available for students. The<br />

winter vacation lasts 4 weeks and normally follows the schedule of<br />

Chinese New Year.<br />

Programs<br />

International students have the following options of study at Peking<br />

University:<br />

(1) Undergraduate or graduate degree-granting programs;<br />

(2) Visiting students program (non-degree granting)<br />

(3) Pre-university program;<br />

(4) Short-term language courses or Chinese studies programs.<br />

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, with valid<br />

passport, above the age of 18, and should abide by Chinese law and<br />

the regulations of Peking University. They should also respect Chinese<br />

social customs.<br />

Undergraduate program: Students are required to complete the<br />

curriculum between 4 to 6 years and fulfill the designated number of<br />

credits. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along<br />

with the bachelor's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree<br />

Committee.<br />

Master's Program: Students are required to complete the curriculum<br />

between 2-3 years, fulfill the designated number of credits, complete<br />

the master's thesis and defend of it in front of a panel of experts.<br />

Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with<br />

the Master's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree<br />

Committee.<br />

Doctorate Program: Students are required to complete the<br />

curriculum between 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill<br />

the designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the<br />

doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful<br />

graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree,<br />

according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.<br />

Senior Visiting Students Program: Candidates must have at least a<br />

Master's degree. Senior Visiting Students are normally supervised by<br />

a professor of the accepting college or department to conduct research<br />

in a specific subject. The program is one year, however, upon request<br />

the student may be considered for an extension. Upon graduation,<br />

the student will receive a certificate of achievement.<br />

<strong>General</strong> Visiting Students Program: Candidates must have<br />

completed at least one year of undergraduate study at their own<br />

university. The options are available for joining undergraduate courses<br />

or enhancing proficiency in Chinese language.<br />

Research Scholars: Candidate must have a doctoral degree or have<br />

the title of Associate Professor or higher. Research Scholars will be<br />

given access to the school's resources and be allowed to collaborate<br />

with professors of the accepting college or department to conduct<br />

specific areas of research. Most successful candidates have established<br />

prior contacts with the professors in their particular fields, anyone<br />

wishing to come for a Research Scholars is strongly advised to find<br />

a supervisor in advance. Research scholars enjoy flexible application<br />

dates and durations of research. The applications can be submitted<br />

anytime, and duration of study varies from one month, one semester<br />

to on year.<br />

Requirement of proficiency in Chinese language<br />

<strong>General</strong> Visiting Students are required to take the Chinese language<br />

proficiency exam after registration. Only those students whose results<br />

meet the standard are allowed to take specialty courses, otherwise<br />

they are suggested to study Chinese in the International College for<br />

Chinese Language Studies for one or two semesters. For those who<br />

have already received the certificate of the HSK (Hanyu shuiping<br />

kaoshi) level 6 or above, the Chinese language proficiency exam will<br />

be exempted.<br />

Senior Visiting Students and Research Scholars are not required to<br />

take the Chinese language proficiency exam, on the premise of no<br />

communication obstacles with their supervisor.<br />

Undergraduates, Master and Doctoral candidates are not required to<br />

take the Chinese language proficiency exam.<br />

Application Processing<br />

It takes approximate 8 to 10 weeks after the application deadline<br />

to receive the formal Letter of Admission. We may inform you to<br />

attend an interview or request additional materials according to your<br />

application process during this period. If you are accepted, we will<br />

send you the Letter of Admission and other relevant documents. To<br />

track the progress of your application please contact the International<br />

Students Division either by email or telephone. Due to our limited<br />

staff, we cannot reply promptly to all enquiries.<br />

Medical insurance<br />

Peking University’s regulations require that all international students<br />

must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period<br />

of study. Students are required to purchase the Comprehensive<br />

Insurance Plan of Foreign Students provided by Ping An insurance<br />

company on the day of registration, which has been recognized and<br />

recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Students who<br />

do not have valid medical insurance are not allowed to register.<br />

Accommodation information<br />

There are different types of housing facilities for international students<br />

at PKU.<br />

Due to the limited accommodation on campus, the Shaoyuan<br />

International Students Residences can only provide the house for<br />

stating expected graduation date), must be original<br />

Candidates for Subjects of Sciences: level 6 or above is<br />

English-teaching programs please refer to the program<br />

7. Table of contents and abstracts of your academic<br />

publications and any other original achievement in your<br />

field<br />

Note: Two copies of all application materials are required, one<br />

original and one duplicate. Please hand in personally or sent<br />

them by post to International Students Division of Peking<br />

University (The envelope must be marked ‘Application for<br />

Graduate Admission’). All the application materials would not<br />

Note: PKU Students who have gained exemption from the<br />

Graduate Entrance Exam, please supply the documents listed<br />

<strong>General</strong> Visiting Student Program<br />

Program introduction<br />

An overseas student wishing to study at Peking University for<br />

up to a year but not for a degree may be admitted as a <strong>General</strong><br />

Visiting Student. Candidates must have completed at least one<br />

year of undergraduate study at their own university. If your<br />

Chinese proficiency does not meet the required standard of<br />

your target course of study, you are suggested to study Chinese<br />

in the International College for Chinese Language Studies for<br />

one or two semesters before entering the department.<br />

Application prerequisites: Applicants must be non-<br />

Chinese citizens with a valid passport, above the age of 18<br />

and under the age of 45, have completed at least one year of<br />

undergraduate study at their own university.<br />

Senior Visiting Student Program<br />

Program introduction<br />

Candidates must have at least a Master's degree. Senior<br />

Visiting Students are normally supervised by a professor of<br />

the accepting college or department to conduct research in<br />

a specific subject. The program is one year, however, upon<br />

request the student may be considered for an extension.<br />

Upon graduation, the student will receive a certificate of<br />

achievement.<br />

Application prerequisites: Applicants must be non-<br />

Chinese citizens with a valid passport, under the age of 50,<br />

have attained at least a master's degree.<br />

Research Scholar Program<br />

Program introduction<br />

Candidate must have a doctoral degree or have the title of<br />

Associate Professor or higher. Research Scholars will be given<br />

access to the school’s resources and be allowed to collaborate<br />

with professors of the accepting college or department to<br />

conduct specific areas of research.<br />

Application prerequisites: Applicants must be non-<br />

Chinese citizens under the age of 55, have attained a doctoral<br />

degree or have the title of Associate Professor or higher. Please<br />

inform us any particular requirements in term of your health.<br />

When to apply: Research scholars enjoy flexible application<br />

dates and durations of research. The applications can be<br />

submitted anytime in spring or fall semester (except of legal<br />

holidays), and duration of study may be 1 semester, 1 year or a<br />

Pre-University Program<br />

Application prerequisites<br />

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens above the age of<br />

18 and under the age of 25, and have attained a senior high<br />

school diploma (not from China) and an excellent academic<br />

record;<br />

2. Applicants must have attained an elementary level of<br />

Chinese, i.e. more than one year of full-time Chinese language<br />

Program Introduction<br />

The short-term programs of Peking University for international<br />

students focus on two areas of study, Mandarin Language<br />

Training and China Studies.<br />

There are two methods for international students to apply for<br />

the short-term programs of Peking University:<br />

(1) Cooperation Programs, which are organized jointly by<br />

Peking University and a foreign university or educational<br />

institution; and<br />

(2)Individual Applications. Individual applications are<br />

reviewed separately. For Individual applicants, please<br />

refer to the Individual Application sections. Cooperation<br />

Programs are currently not available for individual<br />

applications.<br />

goal of these programs is to provide more opportunities for<br />

international students to enrich their understanding of ancient<br />

We are constantly exploring ways to partner with famous<br />

universities and institutions to enhance the quality of our<br />

China Studies Programs.<br />

Note: Cooperation Programs mentioned above are not<br />

1. Any foreign school or institution interested in a joint<br />

program at Peking University may contact us directly to<br />

discuss specific terms of cooperation.<br />

2. Applicants may apply through the foreign school or<br />

institution working with Peking University. Applicants should<br />

fill out the International Student Application Form for Shortterm<br />

Studies at Peking University. Applicants should make<br />

sure that the original copy of the application form should be<br />

received by the International Students Division two months<br />

before class starts.<br />

B. Individual Applications:<br />

1. Individual applicants may ask for the International Student<br />

Application Form for Short-term Studies at Peking University<br />

directly from the International Students Division of Peking<br />

University. Applicants can also visit www.oir.pku.edu.cn and<br />

download the necessary application documents from the<br />

homepage of “International Students”.<br />

2. Application submission period:<br />

a) Spring Semester 2010 Programs: Applications for the<br />

limited vacancies will be accepted on a “rolling” (first-come,<br />

first-served) basis starting on Monday, November 2, 2009.<br />

b) Fall Semester 2010 Programs: Applications for the<br />

<strong>General</strong> Curriculum<br />

A. Class hours: Monday to Friday, four hours per day, twenty<br />

hours per week, with extracurricular activities on Saturday.<br />

B. Mandarin course:<br />

1. Mandatory courses: Intensive Reading, Spoken Chinese,<br />

Pronunciation, and Listening Comprehension & Video<br />

Course.<br />

2. Elective courses: Students can select electives from a variety<br />

of topics such as Chinese Folklore, Translation, Rhetoric,<br />

Writing, Newspaper Reading, Classical Chinese, Selected<br />

Readings from Contemporary Chinese Literature, and others.<br />

All courses aim to improve the student’s the ability to use<br />

Mandarin in real-life circumstances.<br />

C. Class arrangements according to Mandarin proficiency:<br />

Instruction is divided into elementary, intermediate, and<br />

advanced levels. Students are arranged according to the results<br />

of the Mandarin placement exam after registration at the<br />

beginning of the semester. Class size is approximately fifteen<br />

students per class.<br />

D. Chinese Cultural Activities<br />

1. Shadowboxing / Tai Chi (Taijiquan), Chinese painting,<br />

Chinese calligraphy, visits to traditional Beijing residential area<br />

(hutong), etc.<br />

B. King-size rooms in Shaoyuan Building (on-campus): with<br />

color TV, telephone, refrigerator, Internet access, bathroom,<br />

and air conditioner; two persons share one room.<br />

C. Student rooms in Posts and Telecommunications Hotel:<br />

with air conditioner, color TV, telephone, bathroom, and<br />

room-cleaning service, about 5 minutes away from Peking<br />

University campus by foot.<br />

D. Student rooms in Zhongguanyuan Global Village PKU:<br />

In addition, international students are allowed to live<br />

off campus; however, they are responsible for their<br />

accommodations and are required to register at the local police<br />
