The Ceramics Department at the
Mendocino Art Center has undergone
some major changes in the last year
and a half. If you have been here in
the past, but not recently, now is the
time to see all that has been done!
Darrin Ekern took over as the Ceramics
Director in September 2007, and since
that time the Ceramics Department has
been revitalized! Here are just some
of the things he’s been up to: Cleaned,
painted and organized the studio.
Built new heavy-duty work tables.
Done major reconstruction on all the
kilns, electric and gas, so they are all
working at top condition. Purchased
a computerized controller for one of
the electric kilns for better control of
the firings. Built a new Raku kiln, and
rebuilt the wood kiln. Also, this summer
Darrin and his assistants will be
modifying one of the gas kilns to be a
high efficiency air-recuperating kiln,
saving a bundle on fuel usage. This is
only a partial list of the improvements
that are now making the Ceramics
Studio a top notch facility, and work
continues on making the Mendocino
Art Center ceramics department one
of the best ceramics studios around.
Come and see for yourself!
FIRE AND FORM
– Exploring Functional Surface &
Form for the Soda Kiln
The soda kiln offers unlimited possibilities
for the surfaces of our pots. This
workshop is designed for experienced
wheel-formers wishing to fire in a sodavapour
atmosphere. Bring bisqued pots
to slip, glaze, and soda-fire. Students
will be hands-on in all aspects of kiln
loading, firing, and unloading. While the
kiln cools, we will be in the throwing
studio. Bring an idea, problem, or issue
to focus on. Day five, we unload the
kiln. This is a wonderful opportunity to
meld firing and forming. Tuition: $400
(includes 50# of clay).
ROBBIE LOBELL is a studio potter living
COILING POTS IN
RELATION TO THE HUMAN
FORM
The instructor will take you back in
history and introduce the coiled technique
which has been applied by so
many cultures throughout the world and
centuries. The vessel form has survived
throughout and the instructor draws the
comparison to the human shape – which
hasn’t changed that much either! This
course will emphasize the relationship
between people and vessels. The coiling
process enables us to center ourselves
while centering our pieces. Tuition: $410
(includes 50# of clay).
KARIN JARVINEN graduated in 1997
TAPESTRY: ART FORM OF
ITS OWN
In tapestry weaving there is no background
to weave, no paper, no canvas,
only open warp threads. The weaver
builds up one thread on top of the other
and a good part of it will disappear when
the warp gets turned up. Basic weaveable
forms unfold into a composition
through repetition and variation. Such
tapestries have their own rhythm and
will continue moving when hanging on
the wall. This course will inspire tapestry
weavers of today to find out why
this medium has such a unique life of its
own. Tuition: $350.
Everything a beginner needs to know,
from choosing materials and weave
structures, to warping, weaving and finishing.
Students can choose to weave
samplers, or work on an individual project
such as a scarf, placemats, napkins,
runners or pillows, etc. This is an ideal
refresher course for more advanced
weavers to expand and learn new skills.
Materials fee: $3 plus cost of materials
based on individual projects. Tuition:
$325.
LOLLI JACOBSEN has made her living
in the arts for more than 30 years. She
trained as an apprentice weaver and
fabric printer in Denmark and has a BA
in Art from the University of Washington,
Seattle. Lolli headed the Mendocino Art
Center Textile Apprenticeship Program
groups. She runs her own fabric printing
and dyeing business in her Fort Bragg
Studio.
Explore the unique dyeing methods
of arashi shibori (pole-wrapping) and
itajime (fold and clamp) dyeing. Both
involve manipulating cloth into a threedimensional
form by folding, pleating
and wrapping with thread. The fabric is
then immersed into the dyepot to create
beautiful patterns. It is so exciting to
unwrap the fabric and reveal what patterns
result from the combination of dye,
heat, technique and fabric! No experience
necessary, but more advanced
dyers will benefit from the instructor’s
extensive experience as a professional
dyer. Materials fee: $15. Tuition: $225.
WATERCOLOR TEXTURES &
TECHNIQUES
This workshop will include many watercolor
secrets and experimental techniques
that depend on the paper you
choose. Painting on a variety of smooth
surfaces allows lifting and the translucent
watercolor effects and textures
that are are perfect for painting rocky
streams, trees, ocean seascapes, flowers
and other subjects. Gesso coated
paper allows color to be glazed in layers:
lifted easily to white and sprayed
to make textures with salt, scraping,
masking, tree seal, sponges, spatter and
many more. This is a great workshop
for beginning and advanced painters.
Tuition: $350.
PATRICIA MARTIN OSBORNE is a
full time watercolor and mixed media
impressionist painter. She studied at
CCAC, Oakland and San Jose State
University. Her workshops are designed
MIX THAT MEDIA!
This mini-retreat is about Discovery
and Play. We experiment with different
media on a variety of surfaces. Each
day focuses on a different combination,
such as soft pastels with acrylics.
All imagery is applicable and paintings
might develop entirely from layering with
different materials, yielding surprisingly
rich and unexpected results. Combining
materials inspires experimentation and
artistic risks, helping the artist to focus
on process as well as product. Each artist
is invited to use her/his waterbased
medium of choice. Tuition: $350.
MIRA M. WHITE, artist and teacher,
SOLARPLATE
PRINTMAKING
“Solarplate” is the brand name for
one of a variety of products that utilize
light-sensitive polymer coatings which
enable artists to develop either intaglio
(etched) or relief plates for printmaking.
Solarplates are etched in water, are
durable and easy to use. Depending
upon the transparency used to expose
the plate, results can rival lithography
in appearance, photogravure, traditional
etchings, and even woodcuts or
linocuts, yet are processed with nontoxic
means. This workshop will teach
you how to expose, develop, and print
solarplates, in both the intaglio and relief
processes. Tuition: $175.
WOW, THAT’S
OUTRAGEOUS COLOR!
Nancy Collins will help you understand
the aspects of color, whether it’s the
color in your subject matter or new
colors in your shadows. Don’t get stuck
in the idea shadows are always “gray”!
Nancy will help you start to think beyond
gray and even black by the colors you
use in your paintings. Give your paintings
a new outlook, whether seen from a
distance or up close. If you want to take
your paintings to that next level of pizzazz
this is the class for you! All levels
are welcome. Tuition: $350.
NANCY COLLINS has spent the last two
decades painting watercolor. She is a
TAKE CONTROL WITH
WATERCOLOR PENCILS
By far, watercolor is the most popular
art medium, but unless artists are able
to devote many years to painting, they
struggle to achieve even modest success.
But now, everyone, from “weekend
artists” to experts, can learn a controllable
approach to watercolors with
watercolor pencils. Students are given
easy to follow step-by-step demonstrations,
reference art, notes and personal
one-on-one instruction. Tuition: $350.
I NEVER KNEW OIL PASTEL
COULD BE SO EASY
Oil pastel, for me, beats soft pastel
because you can draw and/or paint with
it. Its forgiving qualities make it ideal.
The way I conduct this class is to have
students draw along with me. That way
we get more paintings finished, I have
time to help each student, and you learn
the medium of oil pastel. I cover many
of the basics as we paint and use a lot
of humor to keep things fun. It seems
everyone feels that they “moved up a
notch” by having taken a class with me.
Tuition: $330.
and build the magic of dimensional illusion
by adding water drops. Birgit shares
her techniques and color combinations.
You will see how to interpret a flower
without adding every detail. Some
knowledge of watercolor is helpful. This
class is open to all skill levels - beginners
are welcome. Tuition: $280.
to incorporate other elements such as
shells, glass or kelp. Birgit shares her
techniques and color combinations to
create the illusion of depth and shape in
these shore treasures. Demonstrations
throughout both days, work at your own
STUNNING ABSTRACTS
Do you enjoy working with a variety
of media, but don’t quite know how
to pull it all together Want to give a
richer quality to your work Sometimes
paintings just need a bit more texture,
a more vibrant palette and some genuine
discovery in process. In this high
energy mixed media workshop we will
explore a variety of methods for integrating
surface and image. Our media
will be primarily acrylics, texture paste,
some collage and graphic materials. We
will be working with a variety of rollers,
sprayers, gloved fingers, brushes and -
yes— even power tools! Tuition: $175.
ALL THINGS RED
Red can be difficult to paint in watercolor.
Using the form of a flower, we
will focus on how to create luminous
washes and intensify color. You will then
be able to apply this technique to other
red objects. For instance, there are different
kinds of red: some can repel while
others attract. With many demonstrations
throughout the workshop, Birgit
shares her techniques of color combinations
and application of watercolor to
color blending to create large, smooth
washes of color for the petals. This class
is open to all skill levels; beginners are
welcome. Tuition: $175.
ELECTROFORMING
Build layers of metal, through electroforming,
into one-of-a-kind jewelry by
“growing” your own forms. The nonmetal
form is coated with a metallic
lacquer, which attracts metal to itself
through a chemical bath. The process
results in a freestanding layer of metal
that is a replica of the form underneath.
You can then combine electroformed
elements with various surface
treatments and found objects of every
description. The options are endless!
Tuition: $280.
RUBBER MOLD MAKING
You will learn to make rubber molds
that could be used to create waxes of
lost wax casting, or for casting plaster,
concrete, resins and plastics. We’ll
explore the process of making a poured
mold and a paint up-style mold. Bring a
small pattern that will be molded during
the workshop. This is a perfect lead-in
for the Bronze Casting workshop offered
August 24 – 28. Materials fee required.
Tuition: $250.
PAUL GRAF has a BFA in sculpture from
California College of the Arts in Oakland,
BRONZE CASTING
This workshop is positioned in the
Sculpture schedule to dovetail with the
Rubber Mold Making Workshop offered
August 20 - 22, giving the student an
opportunity to complete the full progression
of clay or pattern to finished bronze
sculpture. However, if you enroll only in
Bronze Casting, not to worry! You will
have two full days to create several
wax patterns. This lost wax workshop
will cover wax techniques, investment,
metal chasing, patination and much,
much more. Because of the volume of
art that can be produced in this class,
we will have a size limit on individual
sculptures (think, “can I carry it in my
lunchbox”). A materials fee will be
required based on the weight of the
finished bronze. Tuition: $400.
SAND-CAST ALUMINUM
SCULPTURE
With this exciting process it is possible
to produce a metal-cast sculpture in a
single day! Styrofoam is used to create
a sculpture pattern which is then
packed in a very fine oil-bound sand.
Molten metal is then poured directly
into the sand, evaporating and replacing
the pattern in metal. For the sculptor,
Styrofoam is a very versatile material;
it is easily cut, shaped, glued, and can
even incorporate molded packing forms
into the design. This workshop will take
students through the entire process of
pattern design, casting and finishing
of sculptures in aluminum, a beautiful
metal capable of being painted, stained,
burnished and polished to a chrome-like
appearance. Tuition: $250
CHILDREN’S PUBLIC WORKS PROJECT
TO BE CONDUCTED AT MAC
At the request of the city of Fort Bragg, ceramic mosaic
panels will be created by our local community’s youth to
be affixed to a new, Spanish style bathroom planned for
Bainbridge Park. Children of all ages are encouraged to
participate. A series of work sessions will be held on the
following dates: June 13 & June 14, June 17, 18, & 19
from 1 pm - 4 pm each day. This is a great opportunity to
create ceramic mosaics, beginning with the clay design
elements and glazing, and culminating with grouted,
finished panels. There is no tuition for this exciting art
experience. To sign up, call Margaret Paul at 964-9483.
MENDOCINO AND THE MENDOCINO COAST
ENROLLING
registration & general info
Mendocino is a quiet, rural, coastal village 160 miles north of San
Francisco, home to more artists per capita than anywhere else in the
U.S. It is surrounded by the rugged landscape and the bay and beaches
of Big River. Mendocino is famous for its Victorian architecture, galleries,
restaurants, artists, writers, and performing arts. It is a visual and
spiritual paradise for the arts, a retreat from the stress of today’s frenetic
pace. There is no hustle and bustle in Mendocino, no fast food, no traffic.
Painters claim that the quality of light here is unlike anything in the
world. You will remember the beauty and tranquility of the Mendocino
Coast long after you have returned from your visit to the Mendocino Art
Center. For more information about what to see and do in the Mendocino
area, contact the Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce at
707-961-6300 or www.mendocinocoast.com.
HOW TO GET HERE
If you are flying in, whether you arrive in Oakland, San Francisco, or
Sacramento, plan on a four hour drive to the Mendocino Art Center, although
Sacramento is an easier airport to get in and out of. From points south, take
Highway 101 north to Highway 128; take 128 northwest to coast Highway 1;
take 1 north to the only stoplight you’ll run into, at Highway 1 at Little Lake
Street in Mendocino. Turn left at Little Lake and go several blocks west; the
Art Center occupies an entire “city block” near the western end of Little Lake.
From points north take Highway 101 south to Highway 20 at Willits; take 20
west to Highway 1, then take 1 south to the stoplight at the intersection of 1
and Little Lake Street; go west on Little Lake . . .
WORKSHOPS
Workshops are open to all students regardless of sex, race, color, nationality,
ethnic origin, sexual preference or religion. Workshops are offered in
Ceramics, Digital Arts, Fine Arts, Jewelry, Sculpture, and Fiber Arts—and a
few resist categorization! Whether it’s pouring, throwing, painting, weaving,
casting, or creating digital art, you can expect small classes designed
to accomplish the most while you’re here, without pressure or measures of
success.
WORKSHOP DAYS AND HOURS
Our workshops vary from one to six days in length, and meet from 9:30 am to
4:30 pm, except as noted. There is a one hour lunch break.
Enrollment is open to individuals 18 years and older (some exceptions made,
with instructor’s consent). Class size is limited due to constraints of studio
size. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY TO ENSURE YOUR SPACE.
REGISTRATION FEES
Each workshop has a specific tuition charge which is generally based on
the costs of running the workshop. This fee must be paid in full at the time
of registration. We cannot hold spaces without full tuition. Registration
can be accomplished by mail, using the form in this catalog; by phone
(707-937-5818, ext 10) or online through our website at
www.MendocinoArtCenter.org. We accept both VISA and Mastercard.
LOCAL STAND-BY PROGRAM
All Mendocino County residents who are members of the Art Center are eligible
for our 50% tuition program. A $25 deposit on any workshop will put you
on a “stand-by” basis. If space is available two weeks before the workshop
begins, you can then register for 50% of tuition. The $25 deposit is refundable
if the class fills or is cancelled.
MATERIALS AND LAB FEES
Materials fees are generally not paid to the Mendocino Art Center, but
directly to the instructor. The materials fee is usually specified in the course
description. Please note that NEARLY EVERY WORKSHOP REQUIRES THE
STUDENT TO BRING SOME SUPPLIES TO CLASS, so you should check the
website listing for the course you are taking to be sure you bring the appropriate
materials and supplies with you. If you do not have Internet access,
please phone our registrar to have a copy of the materials list mailed to you.
REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS
If you notify us at least 21 days before the first class meeting that you will
not be attending a workshop for which you have registered, you will receive
a refund of tuition less a $25 administrative processing fee. NO REFUNDS
WILL BE MADE AFTER THAT DATE FOR ANY REASON, due to our contractual
obligations, material acquisitions, etc. If the Art Center is compelled to cancel
a workshop due to low enrollment, instructor illness, etc., you will receive a
full refund.
