MYBP, so the early origins and elaborations <strong>of</strong> eyes is obscured by their ancient history. The fact that<br />

chitons have hundreds <strong>of</strong> eyes, their relatively recent dual origins, and the extent <strong>of</strong> variation in ocelli<br />

morphology across at least Acanthopleurinae, are all reasons that chiton ocelli could be useful models<br />

for investigating the origin and elaboration <strong>of</strong> eyes in animals.<br />

The land snail genus Pyrenaearia is an endemism <strong>of</strong> the northern mountains <strong>of</strong> the Iberian Peninsula.<br />

As many as 12-16 species are currently recognised within this genus, which are exclusively<br />

differentiated on the basis <strong>of</strong> shell morphology. Many <strong>of</strong> them are living above 1.000 m <strong>of</strong> altitude,<br />

while others show a wide altitudinal range and still a few others are restricted to small valleys. We<br />

have examined the nucleotide sequences <strong>of</strong> mtDNA (16S and COI) and the ITS-I region <strong>of</strong> the<br />

nuclear DNA in order to reconstruct the evolutionary history <strong>of</strong> the genus. Phylogenetic relationships<br />

have been inferred using maximum parsimony, neighbour joining, maximum likelihood and Bayesian<br />

methods. These analyses suggested eight main phylogroups: One restricted to the Cantabrian<br />

mountains, one restricted to the hills in the pre-litoral mountain system <strong>of</strong> Catalonia, a third group is<br />

located in the Moncayo mountains (Iberian System) and the other five phylogroups occur in the<br />

Pyrenees and pre-Pyrenees. A nested clade analysis based on mtDNA sequences has been performed<br />

to infer phylogeographic patterns. The speciation process and the biogeography <strong>of</strong> Pyrenaearia are<br />

discussed in relation to the Pleistocene glaciation events.<br />

DNA sequences <strong>of</strong> two mitochondrial genes (COI and 16S rRNA) from 59 specimens <strong>of</strong> Iberus were<br />

used to test the validity <strong>of</strong> the medium-sized morphospecies <strong>of</strong> the genus and to study the genetic<br />

divergences within and between main phylogenetic groups. All the morphospecies <strong>of</strong> medium size<br />

were included in the study: I. angustatus, I. cobosi, I. guiraoanus, I. loxanus, I. marmoratus, I. ortizi,<br />
