Just remove the passenger seat and secure the baseplate with the Velcro-type hook-and-eye fastener. Now you can attach a large tail bag with 8 to 15 litre capacity using a quick-release fastener. K 1200 RS, K 1200 GT (up to 2005) Seat bag Part No.: 8160825 Rain cover Part No.: 1250030 Step on the gas By now commonplace in the automotive world but a true novelty for motorcycles; we present the BMW K1200 GT as the first “Bi-Fuel Motorcycle”, which runs on either propane (LPG) or petrol! The project began as a joint-venture between Wunderlich and AFE-Tec in Sinzig, Germany, a specialist in converting all sorts of vehicles to run on propane gas. The first prototype, which has already completed a trip to Moscow and back, is equipped with a 10 litre propane tank inside the top case. This increases the range of the K1200 GT by about 200 km. There’s no noticeable difference between operation with gas or propane: Once normal operating temperature has been reached, the fuel pump automatically shuts off and the propane pump switches on. The performance of the motorcycle remains unchanged and even changes in throttle response are unnoticeable. When the propane tank is empty, the system automatically switches back to petrol operation. The current price of propane is about 0.72 Euro per litre, just a bit more than half the cost of petrol. The costs to convert the bike are about 1,800 Euros plus TÜV surcharges. Conversion of the Boxer motor / two cylinder motor is still in development because no standard automotive conversion kit yet exists. Taking the cost of the conversion into consideration, one can easily calculate at which point the system would pay for itself. We see even greater potential for propane conversion with sidecar outfits, not only because they operate less efficiently, but also because side cars offer better possibilities for fitting a propane tank. At the Intermot in 2006, a K1200 R with sidecar was presented and this was a joint venture between Stern-Gespannservice, AFE-Tec and us. A 30 litre propane tank was placed in the trunk of the side car on this unit. You’ll find more information about this in the Accessories Section. In addition to the savings in fuel costs, the propane conversion also offers substantial ecological benefits; when running on propane, harmful emissions are reduced by up to 80% as compared to petrol operation! The combination of propane and petrol furthermore offers unparalleled flexibility, as we were able to demonstrate on our “Moscow Express” tour. The number of stations offering propane in Europe is continually expanding, while just about every station in the east already offers propane fuel.
