Chamber Travel Trip 

to Abu Dhabi and Dubai 

One of the priorities of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce is to be an 

innovative provider of focused programming to help our community maximize its 

potential as a global destination for talent, tourists and trade. 

Last year the Chamber organized a 9 day trip for 55 people to China. This year’s 

trip, departing on September 18th, will be to the United Arab Emirates with 

stops in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Saratoga County has numerous important and 

interesting connections to this part of the world. Sheik 

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Sheik Mohammed), ruler of 

Dubai, is the owner of two horse farms in Saratoga Springs. His 

close associate, Abdulla Al Habbai, is the owner of the famous 

Fasig-Tipton Horse Auction House in Saratoga Springs. 

Non horse related connections include GLOBALFOUNDRIES. 

GLOBALFOUNDRIES is wholey owned by parent company ATIC, 

which is wholey owned by the Abu Dhabi government and is 

headquartered in Abu Dhabi. Working with local and abroad 

members of GLOBALFOUNDRIES and ATIC, some special events 

for the travelersare being organized. Travelers will have a reception 

after arriving in Abu Dhabi at the wafer shaped headquarters 

of ATIC with ATIC business leaders, and area dignitaries. 

While in Dubai, we will receive behind the scenes access to tour 

Meydan Racecourse, home of the Dubai World Cup, the world’s 

premier horse race. These special events are in addition to the 

established itinerary of the trip. 

Informational meetings for those 

interested in exploring and learning 

about the United Arab Emirates with 

the Chamber will be held on 

Wednesday, May 9th and Thursday,

TOURISM UPDATE 

STAFF UPDATE 

Through an effective public-private partnership 

between the Saratoga County 

Chamber of Commerce and Saratoga 

County government, the Chamber has been 

given the ability to promote Saratoga 

County as a premiere tourist destination 

for many years. This year is no different. 

The occupancy reports for the first quarter 

are outstanding. According to the numbers 

released by the Saratoga County 

Treasurer’s Office, occupancy tax for the 

1st quarter was up 36% over last year’s 

1st quarter. Smith Travel Research occupancy 

statistics for the county also reported 

a 25% increase in occupancy year-todate 

for the months of January and 

February. The average daily room rate was 

up 7.4% year-to-date. Website traffic also 

remains strong on www.saratoga.org. Our 

current advertising placements are performing 

very well and are promoting the 

early summer season, including the performing 

arts, historical sites, golf and outdoor 

recreation. As we enter May and June, 

an expanded advertising campaign kicks 

in, which focuses heavily on our summer 

season and attractions. The spring advertising 

campaign contains a mix of traditional 

print and internet marketing while the 

upcoming summer campaign will have a 

stronger emphasis on digital media. We 

also continue to focus our attention on our 

social media outlets and our monthly travel 

e-newsletter as well as many marketing initiatives. 

We are poised well heading into 

the upcoming summer season and will 

continue to work very hard to keep 

Saratoga County visible as visitors are 

planning their upcoming leisure travel. 

Keith VanVeghten, a 2010 graduate of 

Siena College and former employee of The 

Chamber of Schenectady County, was hired 

on April 2, 2012 as the Director of Bringing 

People Together (events). Keith currently 

resides in Mechanicville and enjoys golf, 

football, hiking and plans to start traveling 

more. Being a lifelong native of Saratoga 

County, Keith is eager to get going and giving 

back to the community that has been 

so supportive of him. 

NATIONAL REPRESNTATION BY YOUR CHAMBER 

TODD SHIMKUS ELECTED TO NATIONAL CHAMBER BOARD OF DIRECTORS 

The Association of Chamber of Commerce 

Executives (ACCE) recently announced that 

Todd Shimkus, CCE, President of the 

Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, 

has been elected to a volunteer position on 

the Board of Directors of this national 

association. The ACCE Board of Directors 

includes nearly 50 Chamber Executives 

from across the US and Canada and is 

chaired this year by Tim Sheehy, CCE, the 

President of the Metropolitan Milwaukee 

Association of Commerce. ACCE’s mission 

is to enhance the professional growth, 

career development and management 

effectiveness of chamber professionals.

Saratoga County Chamber of 

Commerce in recognition of our 

Community Respite Program. 

Nearly 400 soldiers and their 

family members have vacationed 

in Saratoga County this year as a 

result of this effort 

Alexandria, Virginia, and represents over 

1,200 members. “I believe one of the real 

benefits from my participation on ACCE’s 

Board of Directors for our members in 

Saratoga County is that I’ll be learning from 

my peers about the most innovative and 

unique programs they are doing that we 

can champion here,” said Shimkus.

GLOBALISM AND EDUCATION - BREAKFAST TOPIC EXPANDED 

As our area grows, more people from other 

parts of the globe are relocating and making 

their homes in our area. Because of 

this, the needs in education are changing. 

The Chamber’s Third Thursday Breakfast 

will explore this more indepth. Following is 

a bit more information about the panelists 

that will be presenting, their organizations 

and what our more globally connected 

county means for them. 

Andrew J. Matonak, President of Hudson 

Valley Community College, has been leading 

the college since 2005. From 2008- 

2010, Hudson Valley Community College 

set enrollment records, most notably topping 

out at 14,000 students in the Fall of 

2010. President Matonak, along with the 

staff at HVCC, understands that with a 

changing student base, curriculums must 

adjust to meet the educational needs of 

the students. Changes throughout the campus 

are visible, including new courses in: 

Adolescence Education, Alternative Fuels, 

Automotive Management, Digital Media, 

Disability Studies, Physical Sciences and 

Polysomnographgy. 

Kim Andersen, Owner of Capital Region 

Language Center, has also experienced an 

increase of students over the past few 

years. Due to an increase in global business, 

the ability to speak multiple languages 

is at an all-time high. Adults, along with 

children, are enrolling more frequently at 

the Capital Region Language Center in 

order to diversify and position themselves 

strongly in the international business market. 

Understanding the busy everyday life 

style people face, Capital Regional 

Language Center customizes classes 

according to their student’s needs and 

offers: American Sign Language, Arabic, 

Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, 

Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. 

International education and business has 

begun to play a factor in high school’s curriculum.

Superintendent of Ballston Spa Central 

School District, has seen his School District 

join the International Baccalaureate World 

School (IB Program). The IB Program is a 

rigorous two year program offered to students 

and is recognized internationally by 

colleges. Introduced in the beginning of 

2012, the IB Program offers Sophomore 

and Junior students courses to take in their 

Junior or Senior year, respectively, in: 

English Language and Literature, French, 

Spanish, History, Psychology, Environmental 

Systems and Societies, Biology, Physics, 

Mathematical Studies, Mathematics, 

Music, Theatre and Theory of Knowledge. 

All IB Students will have the ability to conduct 

research projects, write extended 

essays, and engage in countless creativity, 

action, and service endeavors. 

Susan Klippel, District Manager of the 

Adirondack Region for Junior Achievement 

of Northeastern New York, Inc. has been a 

major influence in the company transforming 

into a global market place. The Junior 

Achievement staff provides management 

and leadership that helps deliver programs 

to 177 schools, serving more than 25,000 

students, in Northeastern New York. The 

Junior Achievement of Northeastern New 

York is implementing special programming 

within schools throughout the region, by 

taking business professionals from their 

respective areas and utilizing them to 

stress the importance of global relationships 

to students as early as 5th grade. 

The breakfast program on the 17th will be 

an interesting discussion about current and 

future needs, what Saratoga County can do 

to add to the vibrancy of our educational 

system and how business leaders can be 

involved.
