A musical finish to the year
While the end of the year is getting ever closer and our celebrations and
recognition of the schools success are well underway, the music department
has provided a number of concerts for students to perform. Last Thursday, we
had a wonderful primary concert. The quality of performance was excellent and
the number of students singing and playing was very worthy of note. This
concert is being followed by our final performance held on this coming
Tuesday, where 20-30 students will be exhibiting their talents in the senior
school music room after school. Also, next Thursday, we will have our Shine
Day where more stars will be unearthed. As a school we have focused on
increasing opportunities for all our students. These recent performances have
been preceded by a significant amount of practise by all of our budding
musicians, and are wonderful examples of how we are able to be inclusive in
our programmes.
PTA Social Evening
We had a really pleasant evening on Wednesday where the PTA put on their
final event of the year to farewell our leaving families and thank our class reps.
As ever they did a wonderful job transforming the Cluster F refectory and
producing wonderful food. The evening was enjoyed by all who attended and
was a fitting finish to an excellent year from the PTA.
Year 4 Cup Cake Sale
Two of our new theme units this year have been particularly successful; the community service units and
the entrepreneurial. Under the entrepreneurial banner, Year 4 last week ran a cupcake bake sale
supporting a charity. The children were involved with the project from the planning stage, through the
making stage and then on to the selling. Mr Cosgrove tells me they sold 300 cupcakes in 20 minutes and
is claiming this as some sort of a record.
A project like this gives the children a great insight into the way businesses are run, the importance of
marketing and customer needs, and an idea of budgeting. More than that they had great fun carrying
out this project.
Here are some of the responses of some of the children having completed the task:
The flyers were very hard as well because we had to make a lot of them to put around school. The
thing I most enjoyed was when we put the flyers around school because we got to put them in a lot
of places that we could find. We also put one in the covered court and a lot of people were crowding
our flyer. I loved this week it was so awesome. Diana Mamatkulova 4NB
This week we made cupcakes. Not the teachers us the kids with supervision of course. We were
called OREO PLANET. - Caleb King 4NB
First we had to make a company name, them a cupcake name, a slogan and finally a logo. My
cupcake company name is called Cupcake Extreme, my cupcake name is called chocolate chuk
chuk, (It relates to our flavor chocolate) my slogan is 'We are cupcakes!' So we started making our
banner it had lots of cool stuff and we also made the posters it had the location, price and our
cupcake company. - Razak Abduh 4NB
We decorated the posters with gems and jewels and we colored it. And the tiny posters we just
drew a cupcake and pasted a keep calm posters. When it was Thursday we started baking our
cupcakes!! It was so fun! We got to mix butter, egg and all kinds of ingredients. When I cracked an
egg it cracked the other way and it splattered on the table. I was really embarrassed!! But soon I
forgot about it and i was having so much fun!!!! Soon Thursday was over, it was time to face Friday.
- Ysabel Agustines 4NB
I liked making and decorating and making our cupcakes. I also enjoyed creating a poster and flyers
for our company. I found selling the cupcakes quite hard but we sold them all eventually. It was fun
choosing a company name, slogan, product name and flavor. - Purvi Ayer 4SC
I liked designing our company poster because when I grow up I want to be an artist and clothes
designer. The best thing was selling the cupcakes. It makes me remember that it isn’t easy creating
a business. - Arabella Chidwick 4SC
I loved our topic on cupcake it was really super fun! Also we got to make our own cupcake boxes
and even our own cupcakes! We called our cupcakes ‘Very Vanilla’. Selling them was the best part.
- Renzo Tan 4SC
I enjoyed our topic about cupcakes and being an entrepreneur. It was fun making the cupcakes and
drawing the poster. I also got to taste and lot of cupcakes and then sold them. I hope Year 4 next
year will enjoy it. - Vince Tiu 4SC
I enjoyed making the poster because I got to work with new people – Ava Daniels 4FO
The bake sale was pretty nice but a lot of people kept choosing the oreo cupcake instead of the
banana cupcake which would have been healthier for sports day – Kyle McDonald 4FO
Ours was hard to sell but in the end we sold them all – Jonny Cook 4FO
It was fun, we sold all of them quickly – Kate Adams 4FO
The bake sale was really fun especially the part when a teacher came and gave us a quiz about our
A wonderful learning experience for the children, well done.
Year 1 Careers Day
On Friday, 14 June the Year One children had the
opportunity to learn all about careers they could consider
for the future. The children dressed up to reflect their
chosen career and we are lucky to have parents from a
wide variety of employment backgrounds that were willing
to come and speak to the children about what their job
entails and why they considered it in the first place. Dr Teo
who is a surgeon and Dr Aguilar-Teo who is a
dermatologist spoke to the children all about medical field.
Mrs Wang had the children arguing two sides of the
Goldilocks ‘case’ when she spoke to them about being a
lawyer. Mrs Daniels introduced the children to the
influential world of TV and print marketing during her
presentation and finally Mrs Van Lierde showed her
creative side when discussing her work and life as an
artist. The children were able to generate fantastic questions
to ask and were genuinely interested in the careers discussed.
My favourite thing about careers day was when the mummies and daddies came to talk about their
jobs – Dashiell Daniels 1KO
I liked dressing up as an ADB worker – Meera Cawrsa 1MM
I want to be a scientist when I grow up because they do lots of work! - Vedant Kabra 1SB
KS 2 Sports Day
Also on Friday, 14 June the KS2 Sports day saw our three Houses battle it out for the coveted Sports
Day trophy. The sun shone, the rain held off and everyone had a lot of fun. The level of sportsmanship
and enthusiasm was in abundance; especially from the Year 3 dancers from Mindanao (photo below).
The times and distances achieved for the different events were very impressive; our fastest 300m times
were secured by, Michael Ottiger and Ella Winlaw, both in Year 4. Our fastest 600m runners were Zeke
Sy and Ena Hill, both in Year 6. And our fastest sprinters over 50m were Alex Duminy and Ena Hill, also
in Year 6. There were some very impressive long jump results from Chloe Gatlabayan Year 5 and Andrew
Gibson Year 6. Many students stood out during the throwing events, scoring maximum points in
one or more throws, including; Alexander Nevelos, Sam Taylor, Paco Borromeo, Matthew Chua, Michael
Ottiger, Jun Law, Sandy Young, Zeke Sy, Andrew Gibson, James Edwards, Adam Lark, Sophia Almendral
and Emma Williams.
The relays were closely fought, but Mindanao powered through to the finish line to win the Year 3 A and
B relay, Year 4 A and B relay, Year 5 B relay and the Year 6 A relay, making it very difficult for the other
Houses to catch up on points. Luzon and Visayas were on the same number of points at the midway
point of the day, but as the competition drew to a close, Luzon pulled away coming in 2 nd place. Visayas
were gracious in defeat and cheered on a delighted Mindanao as they received their trophy. All participants
on the day showed tremendous levels of House spirit. Here’s hoping for another sunny successful
day next year.
LION’S ROAR
Students have been busy receiving feedback on their exams this week, and I know that some of them
are kicking themselves at the mistakes they have made. However, that’s one of the reasons that we
have end of year exams – for students to hone their exam technique so that when they hit ‘the real
thing’ at GCSE or at IB, these mistakes are a thing of the past and they can perform to their full potential.
Next week we will all be out and about undertaking Community Service activities – and huge thanks to
Mr Wooldridge and Mr Platts for organising such a wide and enriching programme for our students. I am
hoping to visit several of the activities to see at first hand the impact our students are having on the
communities around us.
Y12 Work Experience
From 24-27 June, Year 12 students will be undertaking Work Experience. Work Experience is very common
for students in the UK but there is less of a culture of it here in SE Asia. It is a kind of short term
internship. It can be a great experience which students can refer to in their personal statements as well
as include in their college applications and CVs. Each placement is determined by what students feel
they are interested in as well as their future goals for themselves. This year’s placements are quite di-
Dear parents,
We are pleased to announce that we have a new school bus service provider effective August 2013 – JTB
Tours (not 3RN as indicated last week)!
Attached to this announcement is the bus routes and rate sheet. As in previous years bus fees are priced
according to the number of days per term and are subject to discounts as follows:
10% discount for full annual advance payment if paid before or on 19 August 2013,
5% discount for multi-sibling registration applicable from the 2nd child onwards,
2% discount early termly payment if paid before or on the first day of each term (19 August
2013, 6 January 2014, 28 April 2014).
Best of all, the buses will be equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi which is especially useful If you are
sitting in traffic and for longer distances such as Alabang! Also, you will be doing your share in caring for
the environment by reducing your carbon footprint!
We encourage early registration to enable us to plan our routes most efficiently for the benefit of your
child/ren. Early registration will also entitle you to substantial discounts. Routes are planned in advance
and a dry run is done by the bus company a week prior to school opening based on registrations received
at that time. There will be unavoidable changes to the routes and bus assignments as more registrations
are received. However, we expect this to settle after the second or third week into the new
term, and when the ASAs have begun.
The School bus office located at Level 0 will be open daily from 8am – 4pm on the following dates:
24 - 28 June
1 - 5 July
Regular bus office operation starts on 29 July 2013
The current provider’s operation will end on 28 June and the new company JTB Tours will be in the bus
office beginning 24 June from 8am to 4pm to accept bus applications. They will also have their demo bus
