My daughter used to say,
“Dad, ‘member when we
(fill in the blank)… that was really
fun.” She still loves to play the
“remember” game.
An Edition Of The United Methodist Reporter
Remember
Last week, it poured down rain for
multiple days. Remember I looked
out my office window at the water
overflowing the curb up onto the
sidewalk. Just across the driveway
are the dead shrubs from last
summer’s drought. These brown
skeletons are a vivid sign of importance
of remembering. It is a crucial spiritual practice. It is absolutely
true that we should live in the present, and not in the past or in the
future. But it is likewise important that we need to remember what
God and we have been through together.
When times are good, we remember the difficult times, how God
has brought us through them, and we are safely on the other side.
“Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come. ‘Tis
grace hath brought me safe thus far… and grace will lead me home.”
When the sun is shining, we remember the rain. It will make us so
much more grateful for the sunshine.
When times aren’t so good, we remember the good times. This helps
us to recognize that the “dark times” in our lives are only temporary,
and that life is filled with both sun and darkness. Those remembrances
help us to develop a “this too shall pass” approach, and they give us
the strength to hold out for happier times. When we are in the valley
of the shadow of death, we must recognize that still waters and green
pastures are on the horizon. When it is raining, remember that the sun
will shine again.
How does anyone get through life (let alone a crisis)
without good friends and a church family! There have
been so many people praying for me and covering me in
love and I just can't get over how it’s carrying me through
this cancer journey. My heart is bursting with gratitude
for God’s grace and how He is working through each of
you to contribute to my recovery and healing. Many,
Train Move
I like to read. As I enter into
the Lenten journey with
Christ, I often say to him, “I’ll
go, but can I bring a good
book” This year, one of the
books that I am reading is
a recent publication from a
friend of mine entitled Still:
Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis
by Lauren Winner. The title
seemed Lenteny enough and
I always like to support my
friends, so I thought I’d add it
to my Lenten stack.
A Lenten Book
Suggestion
On a plane ride I was just on,
I cracked the book open–if one can crack a book open in an
e-reader–and I thought to myself, “This book could help
people.” Winner writes about death and divorce among
other things in an honest, but grace-filled way. The church
needs these kinds of honest testimonies. I love the
inspiring books seemingly written by folks who have
everything together, and I read lots of them, but during
Lent it is a bit refreshing to hear someone admit that life is
sometimes messy and hard, sometimes we feel alone and
even that God has somehow left us, but that God is
still good.
So if you are looking for this kind of read, I hope that you
will find a copy of Still and let me know how it goes.
Junior high
Break Thru is the Confirmation and Junior
High Spring Retreat April 20-22 at Camp
Pineywoods Baptist Encampment in
Corrigan, Texas. This is a great opportunity for
Confirmands to be welcomed into junior high
ministry and to get to know the seventh and
eighth graders before they move up in grade
this summer. It is also a great opportunity
for our eighth graders to enjoy one last lifechanging
retreat in junior high before they
move up to high school.
Break Thru exists to invite students into a
saving relationship with Jesus Christ and
challenge believers to pursue a deeper level
of discipleship. The weekend retreat is led by
student ministers from several churches all
over Houston. Break Thru is combined with
other junior high student ministries from
15-20 Methodist churches throughout Texas.
It is a weekend full of fellowship, worship,
recreation, break out sessions, free time and,
of course, fun!
This year will mark the 18th year that
Brindley Ginn, St. Luke’s Confirmand Student
Leader, has been to Break Thru! She began
going to Break Thru as a student right here at
St. Luke’s during her seventh grade year, and
has continued to go throughout her student
ministry career with junior high students
from previous churches that she worked.
Brindley states, “I know and trust that the
lives of our students will be changed at Break
Thru, as my life was changed in many ways
there and I have witnessed the lives of many
students being changed as well.” This year
Break Through welcomes the same speaker
that attended the junior high fall retreat this
past year, Scott Austin, so there are sure to be
some students that are excited to be
connected with him again.
Workshop Brings A
Sense Of Recovery
To the Newly Divorced
Regardless of the reason for divorce, no longer being in a
committed relationship can be a harsh reality. But it is not
one people have to face alone. Beginning March 4 at
9:45 a.m., Nick Finnegan Counseling Center (NFCC) hosts
a Divorce Recovery workshop to bring individuals together
to provide them with a network of supporters in similar
situations and to help create a sense of unity in a sometimes
lonely world.
The four-week program led by experienced therapist
Dr. Kelton Ro-Trock, LMFT, LPC helps attendees learn to
cope with feelings of grief and loss, to address concerns
about the future and to find a new balance. Registration is
required as space is limited. Call 713-402-5090 to register
for the workshop or to request free child care–available
by making a reservation with a minimum of one week’s
notice.
Divorce Recovery is held at NFCC now just north of
Kipling at 2714 Joanel. For those who would like
additional or one-on-one help, NFCC offers individual
counseling to help work through life’s challenges as well
as couples counseling to help guide new relationships. Call
713-402-5090 for more information or to schedule
an appointment.
UMW Lenten Spiritual
Growth Event
Westheimer Chapel
All women of St. Luke’s and their guests are invited to a
service of spiritual growth and communion on Tuesday,
March 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Westheimer campus chapel.
Reverend Susan Wiley, Associate Minister at Memorial
Drive UMC, will give the Lenten meditation.
As Rev. Wiley prepares us for prayer and reflection
during Lent, she will share some of her own stories. In her
work at Memorial Drive she oversees Prayer and Stephen
Ministries, and intersects with many families in the life of
her church.
She met her husband Sam and married him 45 years ago
and says: “We spent our first 10 years in Houston and
then moved around for about 20 years, living in Oklahoma
and then Louisiana (and a short stretch in California).”
They returned to Houston in 2001. “While living in Louisiana
I experienced a mid-life call to ministry just prior
to our return to Houston. Transferring from one United
Methodist conference to another had its challenges, but it
did eventually happen, and serving at Memorial Drive has
been a true blessing.”
The Monday Interest Groups (Book Club, Service Group
and Games Group) and the Night Circle will be hosting a
brunch in the Hines Baker room after the service. No
reservations are necessary. Childcare is available by
calling 713-402-5002 or email mbrecht@stlukes-hou.org.
this day. Effygene first joined the choir in 1962 and
has served a total of 35 years, continuing to sing with
the group every Sunday morning.
Distinguished Life
Awards 2012
On Sunday, February 12, the Distinguished Life Award,
the highest honor St. Luke’s bestows, was presented to
four individuals who have modeled the Christian life by
serving the church and community in exemplary ways
for multiple decades. The Class of 2012 includes:
Bob and Barbara Bennett will tell you “Every important
thing in our lives happened at St. Luke’s, ” and it is true.
In 1954, Bob’s first Sunday as Associate Director of Music,
he spotted Barbara sitting on the front row and they
were married six months later. Both of their sons were
baptized at St. Luke’s and later married in the Sanctuary.
Barbara began working part time in the Finance Department
and then took the position as the secretary in the
Music Department where the Bennetts worked together
for 25 years before they retired in 1996. Highlights of
Bob’s ministry include installation of the Pillot Organ
which was given to St. Luke’s in 1959 and the building of
the Rotunda Theatre which allowed the Music Ministry
to expand its offerings to include concerts and musicals.
Bob is especially proud of the fact that he “worked
for every minister and associate minister St. Luke’s has
every had.” In addition to her administrative work with
the Music Department, Barbara was part of the team
which produced the book, Upon This Rock, a History of
St. Luke’s. The Bennetts are proud of the fact that St.
Luke’s founders had tremendous foresight in building
a large church that serves the whole city and say that
they worked to create musical programming for that
diverse audience.
Greg Davis came to St. Luke’s with his children who
were active in Youth activities here. He soon became
involved in the Hines Baker Class for men. Not long
after joining, he also began his many years of service as
an usher and became a member of the Funeral Guild.
Although his friendly smile is familiar to members and
visitors alike, Greg may be best known for his boutonnieres.
As an avid gardener, he arrives with fresh flowers
for the ushers almost every Sunday morning.
Shirley Wiss joined Gethsemane United Methodist
Church in 1956 when the congregation met in the
Sharpstown Administrative Building. She has been a
part of the church through its merger with Canterbury
United Methodist Church and the recent merger
with St. Luke’s. Throughout the changes she has seen,
music has always been her passion in the church.
She has been Chairman of Worship, president of the
choir, a soloist and a substitute choir director. In fact,
she gave the church its new organ several years ago.
She has also combined her love of design and sewing
into her church life and designed many of the stoles
and paraments used during worship. Shirley currently
serves as a member of the Gethsemane Site Council,
which helps to coordinate campus programs. After
more than 50 years in the congregation, she says, ”It
is important to volunteer. This is a family.”
Thanks to the efforts of our amazing volunteers, our
last Easter at the Park was a huge success. I am
coordinating the volunteers for this year’s event and
want to invite each of you to come out and help
make Easter at the Park an even bigger success this
year.
Please let me know if you can join us this year and if
you have a job preference! We have volunteer opportunities
for the day of the event as well as volunteer
