The Greater Yellowstone Coalition
believes that the unique attributes of
the 22 million acres we are charged
with protecting are irreplaceable and must
be saved. We are not alone in that belief.
In 2007, thousands of GYC supporters
sent e-mails to their leaders asking the Park
Service to ensure a clean, quiet future for
Yellowstone by eliminating snowmobiles
and using snowcoaches to access the park in
winter. Thousands more protested the Forest
Service’s proposal to expand a phosphate
mine in the southwest corner of Greater
Yellowstone that would pollute water and
harm wildlife. Dozens of volunteers came
together to take down old fences impeding
wildlife migration, help restore wetlands and
improve wildlife areas. Across the ecosystem,
letters to the editor peppered the local newspapers
asking for the Wyoming Range to be
protected from oil and gas development and
the Snake River to be set aside under the Wild
& Scenic Rivers Act. And generous donations
from individuals, foundations, businesses
and families allowed us to meet the financial
needs of the organization. Thank you.
We are lucky to have such committed partners.
All of us share the desire to keep the
land, waters and wildlife of this spectacular
place free from harm and preserved from
the mounting pressures of modern life.
Together we are making a difference.
In the last year, your trust, action and
support of our programs allowed us to
achieve some significant victories:
• Legislation to protect 1.2 million acres
of the Wyoming Range from oil and gas
development was introduced in the U.S.
Senate.
• We helped purchase a 187,000-acre
grazing allotment in the Gros Ventre
Valley near Grand Teton National Park
setting the land aside for grizzly bears,
wolves and other wildlife.
• GYC challenged the decision by the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service to delist the grizzly
bear because the plan did not ensure
that sufficient bear habitat on public lands
would be protected.
• GYC’s work to protect roadless lands
helped lead to a federal judge reinstating
the nationwide Roadless Rule protecting
millions of acres in Greater Yellowstone
and beyond.
• Capping several years of collaborative
work with the Madison Valley
Ranchlands Group and valley citizens,
the Madison County Commission
adopted a growth-management plan that
will conserve open lands for wildlife and
ranching operations.
Additionally, we were successful financially.
Our 2007 auditor once again gave us a
clean bill of health. We not only met, we
beat our fundraising goals for the last
two years. Your generous support and
commitment to this work is outstanding.
We are very grateful.

Annual Meeting in West Yellowstone.

2007 Highlights
PhosPhive chalks up more wins
against Idaho mining industry:
Our southeast Idaho contingent has
worked tirelessly to force the phosphate
mining industry to clean up its act and
prevent new incursions on roadless
lands. Those grassroots efforts resulted in
stopping the Idaho Mining Association
from introducing a bill into the Idaho
Legislature that would have weakened
laws regulating the amount of selenium
pollution allowed in water. GYC was
awarded a 2007 Hermes Creative Award
for its postcard “Endangered Habitat”,
which drew attention to the impacts of
southeast Idaho mining.
Wyoming Range on track for protection:
GYC successfully fought for legislation
that would prohibit future oil and gas
development in the Wyoming Range south
of Jackson. Thanks to a groundswell of support
from miners, ranchers and recreational
enthusiasts, Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso
introduced a 1.2-million-acre bill safeguarding
the Wyoming Range’s wildlife and recreational
opportunities.
Heli-skiing company’s bid to use
wilderness study area rebuked: When
a heli-skiing company in Jackson wanted
to use the Palisades Wilderness Study
Area in southeast Idaho as a playground,
we joined other conservation groups in
arguing that the area retain its “wilderness
character.” A federal court agreed. The heliskiing
company now must comply with the
Wyoming Wilderness Act.
Keeping the winter peace in
Yellowstone: Working on behalf of
wildlife and quiet winter recreation in
Yellowstone, GYC sought a court review
of the National Park Service’s decision to
ignore its own scientific data on motorized
use. We are pushing for snowmobiles to be
replaced by snowcoaches.
Keep the Bear River free flowing!
GYC organized opposition in southeast
Idaho to a Bear River dam that would have
inundated tributaries vital to the struggling
Bonneville cutthroat trout and destroyed
pristine recreational areas.
Wild and Scenic forever: GYC rivers
coordinator Scott Bosse led successful
efforts to gain Wild & Scenic designation
for the headwaters of the Snake River. The
result was a bill, introduced by the late
Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas and carried
forth by successor John Barrasso, that’s
on track to protect the entire upper Snake
River watershed.
Room to swim: Scott Christensen, GYC’s
private lands director, led a groundbreaking
drive to help Yellowstone cutthroat trout
to navigate around a dam on the Henry’s
Fork of the Snake River near Chester, Idaho.
Working with our partners, we convinced
the hydropower company to modify the plan
so cutthroat can reach valuable upstream
habitat for the first time in 75 years.

Coalition is pleased to
report another strong year.
Memberships, individual donations,
and foundation grants have allowed
the organization to expand important
conservation work and achieve many
successes.
Our Board of Directors, Finance
Committee members and staff are
committed to strong governance,
accountability and transparency. The
Finance Committee of our Board
of Directors retains an independent
accounting firm to conduct an annual
audit of our financial statements, assuring
that the organization is prudent with the
resources with which we are entrusted
each year. We’re proud that our audits
are consistently “clean,” confirming the
financial statements are complete and
accurate. The audited financial statements
and IRS 990 Form (the federal non-profit
tax return) are posted on our web site
(www.greateryellowstone.org).
We are fortunate to be sustained by close
to 9,000 members and many foundations,
businesses and like-minded organizations
that signal their belief in our work through
annual financial support. We gratefully
acknowledge that support for the period

Financial Summary
Net Assets – We maintain a
healthy balance, with over
$4 million that is either
unrestricted or temporarily restricted
and available for specific purposes. In
addition, over $2 million is held in
permanently restricted endowment
funds that generate earned income,
a portion of which is applied toward
annual operations.
Fu n d i ng — In 2007, Gre ater
Yellowstone Coalition revenues totaled
$3,643,244, with $1,318,929 or 36%,
coming from generous individual
supporters. Foundation grants of
$1,487,018 represented 41% of the
revenue supporting our conservation
programs. The remaining 23% came
from other sources, including special
events and investment earnings. A list
of supporting foundations and major
donors is included in this report.
Revenue is recognized in the year a
promise to give is made, even though
the funds may be received and the
related expenses incurred in future
years, in accordance with generally
accepted accounting principles.
Conservation Program Expenses —
$2,338,692, 77% of total expenses, was
applied toward our direct conservation
and education programs to protect
the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem’s
wildlands, wildlife and rivers, and
to build broad public support for
conservation that is sustainable over
time within ecosystem communities.
Support Service Expenses — General
administrative and fundraising
expenses that support GYC’s
conservation mission totaled $706,158
or 23% of total expenses for 2007.
