A Note From the College President ...
The beautiful SCC baseball diamond is ready once again for competitive intercollegiate action. The Cougars, under the direction of
Coach Chris Gober, have worked hard in the off-season to put together another exciting product on the field this spring. We invite
students, faculty, staff and the community to attend our home games.
The campus community will swell with Cougar pride as we cheer on a young and talented baseball team. This season brings new
faces both in the lineup and in the classroom, and we look forward to watching the program continue to grow and improve.
We salute the Cougar baseball players as they work toward a successful season. We know the men will strive to perform equally
well in the classroom and on the field.
Best Wishes,
Our fans are outstanding in their support of our teams and in rooting us on to victory. Our coaches and student-athletes are
focused, striving for excellence on the field and in the classroom. Our graduates continue to support the program, some assisting
us in the coaching arena. The athletes are good campus citizens and have been volunteering their assistance with various campus
projects.
I encourage you to visit our campus and enjoy some excellent competition between the SCC Cougars and other great teams. You
can’t go wrong by rooting for the Cougars. Be sure and wear your maroon and gray to show everyone your Cougar Pride!
About the Coach
Chris Gober enters his 16th season looking to guide St. Charles Community College to another 30-win season. Since taking over
the helm, Gober has recorded a total of 314 wins, which rank most by a head coach in Cougar history.
He also helped produce nine players who have been drafted and/or signed professional contracts and 30 Cougars who have
earned first team All-Midwest Community College Athletic Conference honors. Six of his student-athletes have gone on to
garner All-American honors and 16 have received first team All-Region XVI accolades.
for two years, and his success led him to an All-Mid West Community College All-Conference selection in 2001 as a pitcher.
2013 baseball guide 4
Cougar baseball young, but talented
Sixteen year Head Coach Chris Gober and Assistant Coaches Patrick Clooney and Don
Lisi are looking forward to the 2013 campaign ...
This year’s edition of the Cougar baseball team is an interesting mix. The Cougars
return seven players who saw considerable playing time during 2012. St. Charles has
also added seven talented transfers who should make significant contributions. That
combined with a solid freshman recruiting class makes the outlook for 2013 quite
promising.
Gone from the 2012 pitching staff are 10 pitchers who combined to throw 74 percent
of the total innings pitched for the Cougars, but the 2013 staff is not without experience.
Five sophomores will be counted on as the staff’s foundation. Returnee, Danny
Droege went 3-3 with 2 saves and a 4.10 ERA in 2012.
“Danny is a guy that throws the ball in the middle to upper 80s and has good-off
speed stuff,” said Gober.
He will be a starter on the 2013 staff and we look for him to have a big year.
Sophomore Aaron Bedsworth will once again be a fixture in the starting rotation.
Bedsworth comes off of a hard luck 2012 season that saw him post a 1-4 record with
a 4.15 ERA.
“Aaron pitched well before injury shortened his season. He will be one of our top two
guys,” said Gober.
Right hander Brennan Callaway rounds out the trio of returning starters. Callaway
posted a 2-3 record as a freshman with a 5.77 ERA. Brennan should again be a fixture
in the starting rotation. The Cougars also return valuable sophomores in Jon Willie
and Patrick Shumway. Willie is making the transition from outfield to the mound and
will pitch primarily out of the bullpen. Shumway is a finesse guy who will be used
out of the bullpen. Both will see ample mound time in the 2013 season.
Seven freshman including one transfer
round out the 2013 pitching corps. Heading
the list are three right-handers and
two lefties who have the ability to pitch
as starters or relievers. Lefty Spencer
Pugh will work as a starter. Tome
Kirkland has all the tools to be a starter
or a closer. Andrew Hughes could see
time in middle relief or as a spot starter.
Transfer D.J. Scott is expected to battle
for time for a spot in the rotation.
Freshmen right-handers Josh Lachnit,
Steph Grosch and Otto Schmidt will
provide additional options out of the
bullpen.
CHRIS GOBER
Head Coach
Defensively, in 2013, Joe Gardner, Matt Fisher and Austin Avalos will battle for time
behind the plate. Freshmen Austin Boden and Zach Elledge will compete for the first
base job. Second base will be handled by Trey Pirkle and Kevin Henke. The shortstop
job is up for grabs between Daniel Seddon and Brady Reising. Freshmen Zach Herman
and Jack Manley will via for playing time at third base.
New additions to the outfield include transfers Ethan Schlesener and Brad Chapman.
Schlesener will start in center and Chapman in left. Brendan Grelle, Jack Toler and
Ben Weeks will provide depth in the outfield.
