<strong>JOB</strong> <strong>DESCRIPTION</strong><br />

<strong>Professional</strong> <strong>Tutor</strong> – <strong>Part</strong>-<strong>Time</strong> (<strong>amended</strong> <strong>11</strong>-<strong>29</strong>-2012)<br />

Department: Academic Support Center<br />

General Function:<br />

This position facilitates student learning by (a) helping to clarify specific course content and (b)<br />

promoting/modeling the use of appropriate study strategies.<br />

Required Qualifications:<br />

• A bachelor’s degree in the area of tutoring or a closely related area.<br />

• A grade of B or higher in all course(s) and/or academic subject areas for which tutoring<br />

services will be offered.<br />

• A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher in all post-secondary course work.<br />

• Required attendance at all tutor training activities and departmental staff meetings as<br />

scheduled by the Academic Support Center director.<br />

Preferred Qualifications:<br />

• Teaching/tutoring experience, particularly in post-secondary courses.<br />

• Other relevant work experience that demonstrates either knowledge of the content or the<br />

ability to work with students or the ability to communicate ideas effectively.<br />

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:<br />

1. Adhere to all tutoring guidelines, as outlined by the Academic Support Center director.<br />

2. Meet with assigned tutees in Academic Support Centers or other designated or preapproved<br />

areas.<br />

3. Consult with a tutee’s instructors for advice, guidance, and direction in their tutoring<br />

work.<br />

4. Conduct in-person or online tutoring sessions as needed.<br />

5. Inform and/or consult with the Academic Support Center director if problems are<br />

encountered, or the need arises for assistance relating to a specific tutoring situation.<br />

6. Work cooperatively with Academic Support Center staff to deliver a cohesive tutoring<br />

program and to respond in a professional manner to diverse student needs.<br />

7. <strong>Part</strong>icipate in all tutoring training sessions and tutoring staff meetings, as requested.<br />

8. Respect students’ rights to confidentiality and follow legal guidelines regarding<br />

dispersal of information.<br />

9. Act as a representative for the tutoring program within the college community.<br />

10. Submit weekly reports and monthly time sheets to the Academic Support Center<br />

director as requested.


<strong>11</strong>. Perform other duties as assigned.<br />

12. Under no circumstances should a tutor do a student’s work for him/her or provide<br />

copies of specific exams or quizzes previously given by the professor to the student.<br />

<strong>Tutor</strong>s will not write papers, review books or prepare work for a student. A tutor may<br />

guide, direct and offer assistance in organizing a paper or preparing for an exam,<br />

including discussing the types of questions usually asked on an exam, but the student<br />

must do his/her own work. The tutor may cancel and/or terminate the tutoring<br />

relationship if the tutee presses the tutor to do his/her work.<br />

13. <strong>Tutor</strong>s may work a maximum of 27.5 hours per week.<br />

14. Individual students may be tutored a maximum of three hours per week.<br />

15. Face-to-face tutoring sessions may only be held at the following SPCC locations: the Old<br />

Charlotte Highway campus in Monroe; the L.L. Polk campus in Polkton, and the<br />

Lockhart-Taylor Center in Wadesboro.<br />

16. <strong>Tutor</strong>ing may not take place on the weekend.<br />

17. Make a minimum of four tutoring presentations to SPCC classes during the beginning of<br />

each semester. Locations, dates and times of presentations will be approved by the<br />

Academic Support Center director.<br />

18. Accept tutoring assignments, based on the needs of the college, at one or more of the<br />

following: L.L. Polk campus (Polkton), Old Charlotte Highway campus (Monroe), and<br />

Lockhart-Taylor Center (Wadesboro).<br />

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:<br />

• Basic computer literacy.<br />

• Knowledge of college procedures and standard tutoring procedures.<br />

• Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying<br />

educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.<br />

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.<br />

Working Conditions:<br />

Typical office, computer or tutoring laboratory environment; infrequently lifting and carrying<br />

items up to 10 lbs.; infrequently twisting or bending at the waist or reaching overhead;<br />

frequently traveling between buildings on campus or to other campuses; frequently listening to<br />

and talking with students, faculty and other staff members in person or on the telephone;<br />

frequently sitting at a desk.
