Soloveitchik, himself, regarded the<br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong> Israel as a ―refut[ation] [<strong>of</strong>] the claim that Jews are a people<br />

rejected by G[-]d,‖ 227 this new political reality <strong>of</strong> Jewish self-determination appearing to<br />

disconfirm a supposedly axiomatic Christian theological conception <strong>of</strong> the Jews. In fact,<br />

Soloveitchik seems to have ―relished‖ 228 the reversal <strong>of</strong> fortunes, with ―Judaism through<br />

the State <strong>of</strong> Israel…at the apex <strong>of</strong> its temporal power…[and] the Church…at its nadir.‖ 229<br />

During the period <strong>of</strong> the Second Vatican Council, the Church seemed to be developing<br />

―two conflicting tendencies...: a greater respect for the Jews, and a growing sympathy for<br />

the plight <strong>of</strong> the Palestinians.‖ 230<br />

However, with Israel‘s victory in the Six-Day War in<br />

1967, ―Contacts between Jews and Catholics increased.‖ 231 On December 22, 1975, the<br />

Pope, speaking to Israeli Jews, ―acknowledged the rights and legitimate aspirations <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Jews to a sovereign and independent state <strong>of</strong> its own.‖ 232 In 1983, ―Monsignor W.<br />

Murphy, Under-Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace,<br />

acknowledged that the Holy See recognized the factual existence <strong>of</strong> Israel, its right to<br />

exist within secure borders, and other rights that a sovereign nation possesses.‖ 233<br />

Among the Protestant community, ―Many Evangelical churches have attained an<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> Israel for Jews.‖ 234<br />
