Engines Roared as the
Temperatures Soared
On Friday, June 22, our recipients
were treated to a delicious hamburger
and tater tots lunch delivered by a
special volunteer. Many local celebrities
generously donated their time and
endured the near 100 degree temperatures outside to deliver the meals to our recipients at
the Big Wheels Deliver Meals’ promotion. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Lubbock
Meals on Wheels and Sonic Restaurants have joined together to help raise public awareness
and involve local celebrities in the mission of Meals on Wheels. Sonic Restaurants
graciously donated 703 meals to feed all the recipients, celebrities, and classic car drivers.
Each celebrity, paired with a classic or unique car and driver, left for an assigned route
from one of the twelve area Sonics. After all of the routes had been delivered, everyone
was invited back to the Meals on Wheels’ office to enjoy their Sonic lunch along with
tasty ice cream sandwiches donated by Gandy’s and beverages donated by Coca Cola
Refreshments. Thank you to Sonic for making this event possible. Our thanks also
goes to The SportsZone for donating event t-shirts for all of the celebrities and Xstream
AutoClean for donating complimentary car wash cards to all the drivers. We truly appreciate
everyone who helped make this a very special and fun day for our recipients.
Volunteer Spotlight
This new special article will feature one Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ volunteer and will include a
photo and information about their volunteer service in their own words. We hope you will enjoy
reading about some of our many dedicated volunteers and perhaps their stories will inspire you to
volunteer as well!
Kathy Graham
Start Date: January
2007
Volunteer Duties:
deliver
meals, serve
on volunteer
council, help
in kitchen and
office, package
fruit
Why did you decide to volunteer I always volunteered
when I could while teaching and raising
five children by myself. Once I retired, I had
time to volunteer more.
Why do you continue to volunteer I enjoy everyone
at Meals on Wheels, staff and clients. Of
course, if I’m here I can’t be home cleaning! I
am also used to being busy all day.
Most memorable volunteer experience: Delivering
fruit one day I had a gentleman so excited that
he was eating a banana before I could get to
the car.
Why do you think your volunteer work is important I
really enjoy seeing how my grandchildren
respond to people with different needs and
problems. My children still volunteer now
that they are older.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels is excited to
announce the receipt of a grant for the Pet Food
Program from Banfield Charitable Trust! The
grant for $2500 is to be used for the purchase of
pet food for our Pet Food Program that has been
in existence since 1999.
Since 2003, Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT)
has been working to keep the most vulnerable
populations together with their pet companions.
With the help of their donors, they promote the
human-pet bond which provides mental, physical,
Seeking Subs
Lubbock Meals on Wheels is searching
for substitute drivers. Substitute volunteers
are those who just deliver as needed and as
available rather than committing to a certain
route on a specific day. With summer
vacations and the large number of routes,
substitutes are needed to fill in for regular
drivers almost every day. The benefits of
being a substitute are that you are not committed
to a weekly route, you get to go on a
variety of routes, and you get to meet many
different people. As with all volunteers,
a one-hour orientation is required. All of
the routes are within the city limits, have
between 8 and 12 stops, and average about
12 miles. It only takes about one hour to
deliver a route, and you can drive as many
or as few days as you are available. So if you
think you could help out and substitute on
occasion, please call Barbara
at 806-792-7971.
What do you want people to know about Lubbock Meals
on Wheels Meals on Wheels provides a very
needed service, not only food but personal
contact for many who do not have
family available.
and emotional benefits to our communities. They
work to prevent the surrendering of pets which
needlessly burdens public and private shelters.
This includes funding pet food distribution programs
across the country for homebound seniors
through Meals on Wheels programs.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels is grateful for this
generous grant that will help feed the four-legged
companions of our homebound, elderly, and
disabled clients.
One in every nine seniors is at risk of hunger. Throughout the month of September Comfort
Keepers of Lubbock will gather specific food items and monetary donations for Lubbock Meals
on Wheels to fill 3500 weekend meal bags. Weekend meals are provided to those Lubbock Meals
on Wheels recipients that have no access or assistance with food over the weekend. This initiative
supports Comfort Keepers’ goal to improve the quality of life for seniors and help them
maintain healthy, independent lives. A food drive will be held on September 15th from 9a.m.-
6p.m. at two WalMart locations, 82nd & Milwaukee and Quaker & Loop 289. If you and/
or your business or church wants to help STOP Senior Hunger by conducting a food drive or
by donating the cost of a weekend meal bag, please call Comfort Keepers at 806-687-7800.
Thank you
for taking
care of my
dear friend
and neighbor,
Tony.
-Art
Thank you for helping all these years!
-Benard
Thank you for all you do. You were a great
service for mother for several years before
she passed away.
-Bobby
I save my pennies in a peanut butter jar
until I can go change them for $1.00 and I
send it to help a little bit.
-Lois
Thank you for your love & support. God
bless you, your staff & sweet volunteers.
Going, Going, Gone!
The annual garage sale in April that
benefited Lubbock Meals on Wheels
and Metropolitan Rotary was a tremendous
success raising over $8500!
Almost every single item donated to
the sale was sold. Our sincere thanks
to Delta Theta Chi for all of their
help preparing for and during the sale
and to Tony Cardinal whose generous
donation of the use of his building
and utilities made the event possible.
Thank you also to all the Lubbock
Meals on Wheels’ and Metropolitan
Rotary’s volunteers for all of their hard
work pricing, sorting and selling!
Volunteers deliver dry dog food and cat food every other week to the pets
of meal recipients who are unable to provide pet food for their furry friends.
Currently, about 118 dogs and 67 cats are on the Pet Food Program so donations
of dry food are always welcome! Collecting pet food is also a great project for a service
group, organization, or business office. Anyone interested in donating food can bring it
by Lubbock Meals on Wheels during normal business hours (8a.m.-4:30p.m. Monday –
Friday) or call (806) 792-7971 for more information.
Groups and Grants
Lubbock Meals on Wheels is fortunate to have the support of many local organizations
and businesses that donate to our programs. Our thanks to Civic Lubbock,
Inc. for their grant to cover the cost of the Exhibit Hall for our Mardi Gras
2013 fundraiser. We also want to thank the Downtown Kiwanis Club for their
generous donation of $1,000 in April, the New Neighbors Club for their great
gift of $1400 in May, the Pirates of the Plains Parrot Head Club for their June
gift of $461, and the B.P.O. DOES No. 162 of Odessa for their kind donation
of $1,000. Another big thank you to our new friends at Mighty Wash Amazing
Auto Bath for their donation of $500 from a promotion they held on Easter
Sunday. We also appreciate Girl Scout Troop 6308 for their generous gift of
fifteen cases of delicious Girl Scout cookies, and Maya Sanders and Scout, Tate,
and Caleb Thrasher for donating some of the proceeds from their lemonade stands
on Lemonade Day! We truly appreciate the generosity of all of these individuals,
groups, and businesses that help make our community a better place to live.
a note from the executive director
I recently read an article about building boards and lessons
that could be taken from big league baseball. I really
enjoyed this article and it fits right in with the dog days of
summer.
Nonprofit organizations should operate more like a
baseball team! We have been told that “nonprofits should
run more like a business” but a baseball team, seriously
Many nonprofit boards don’t address future need for board
members in advance of the need. Rather, it is the vacancy
on the board that triggers the search.
This approach to board member recruitment then is often
a “shot in the dark,” hoping the new recruit is passionate
about the cause, and will faithfully fulfill their duties. So
here are three lessons on team building from the big leagues.
Lesson 1 – Recruit early and recruit often. Don’t wait for
an injury to begin recruiting, build a bench of talent. What
about nonprofits According to BoardSource, the average tenure of a board member is
7.2 years. Board members, like MLB players will move on to other pursuits.
Lesson 2 – Grow your own leaders by creating paths for development. People
volunteer, attend a fundraising event, support the pet program, or donate to support
the program. This helps to identify potential prospects by observing those
who exhibit leadership qualities. Then when vacancies arise, you can score a home
run with your choice.
Lesson 3 – Honor your heroes. Every team has their own Hall of Fame. People are
honored for their contributions. The key is finding ways to keep volunteers connected
with a lifetime of involvement with the organization.
mission
statement
Respecting the dignity of every
human being, no matter their need or
physical condition, Lubbock Meals on
Wheels will provide nutritious, home
delivered meals to those who are
homebound, elderly or disabled. We
shall seek to break the social isolation
experienced by the homebound by
providing warm, caring, friendly
contact through our volunteers.
The Annie’s Chat & Chew event was
held at the Mae Simmons Senior
Center on Saturday, April 14th from
11a.m.-2p.m. This fundraiser was
started over twenty years ago by longtime
volunteer Annie Sanders and
continued as a memorial once again
this year. Guests enjoyed plenty of
great catfish, side dishes, and homemade
desserts, visiting with friends,
and remembering Annie Sanders, a
very special woman. Thank you to
everyone who helped to make this
event a success and raise over $1300
