HCPS ranked 4 th in the Western Region. North Carolina’s rate was 3.43%. 23 Schools 13 elementary 4 middle 4 high 1 Early College High School 1 Education Center Employees • Over 1,800 employees • 238 National Board Certified Teachers Volunteers Volunteers are welcomed and gladly accepted at our schools. To ensure the safety of all our students, procedures have been implemented that involve background checks and photo IDs. Balfour Education Center Offers programs for students who need a different approach than that of the traditional middle and high schools. The Center has a Auto Technology program, CNA program, Cosmetology program, and an Early Childcare Education program. Henderson County Early College High School Partnership between HCPS and Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC). Located on the BRCC Flat Rock campus. Students attend high school while taking college level courses with goal of graduating with high school diploma and two years of transferable credit or an Associate’s Degree in five years. Quick Facts School Calendars Traditional – 20 schools operate on 9-week grading periods Flex Quarter – 2 schools operate on 9-week grading periods with 3-week intersessions Early College High School – operates on schedule similar to that of the local community college High School Schedules East, North and West Henderson operate on a 4x4 schedule (4, 90-minute class periods per day, 4 courses a semester with a possible 8 units of credit earned per year). Hendersonville High operates on a 7-period day (7, 50-minute class period per day with a possible 7 units of credit earned per year). ChildCare PSAM (Public School AM–before school) • Hours 6:30-8:00 am, $4 per day/per child • In all 13 elementary schools during school year PSPM (Public School PM–after school) • Hours 3-6 pm, $10 per day/per child (includes afternoon snack) • In all 13 elementary schools during school year Child Nutrition The goal of the Child Nutrition Program is to promote good nutrition while offering food that is appealing and wholesome. During the 2010-11 school year 582,840 breakfasts and 1,626,660 lunches were prepared and served. HCPS lunch menus provide a minimum of 30% of the calories and nutrients children need to promote growth and a healthy weight while keeping the total fat content at less than 35% averaged over a week. Menu adjustments are made for children with special needs. During 2010-11 approximately 52% of HCPS students qualified for free/reduced meals. Transportation During the 2010-11 school year, 1,091,465 miles were traveled at a cost of $2.62 per mile. An average of 6,426 children were transported. HCPS operates a fleet of 155 buses (111 regular yellow buses, 28 activity buses, 4 vocational buses, and 12 spare buses). Curriculum • AIG (Academically Intellectually Gifted) Program: A county-wide AIG brochure is available at each school. • Career and Technical Education: Courses offered in Trade & Industrial Education, Family & Consumer Science, Health Occupations Education, Middle Grades Exploratory, Marketing Education, Agricultural Education, and Business Education • Career Development Program: All students entering high school must graduate under new state graduation requirements, “Future-Ready Core.” 2
