BRINGING BOOKS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER SINCE 1995 ISSN 1177-0562
Anjali Thakker visited Horotiu School to help present their Book Offer Two books. Anjali is a member
of the New Zealand Ice Ferns team and the New Zealand Inline Hockey team. The school has three
inline hockey teams so Anajali’s visit was a real treat! School Sponsor: RX Plastics Ltd.
Government makes book ownership
affordable for Duffy kids
In October 1996 all children involved in
the Duffy Books in Homes programme
received a free book thanks to a one-off
grant from the Government of $250,000.
Now the Government donates more
than $1,300,000 annually to ensure
that children in Duffy schools have the
opportunity to own their own brand new
books at no cost.
What began in 1996 as the Budget Day
Book Festival is now called Government
Book Week. It is a regular part of the school
year for all Duffy schools.
Through the Ministry of Education the
Government provides a book to each of
almost 100,000 children annually which they
choose from a catalogue at the start of Term
Two. At the end of the term schools invite
Government representatives to help present
the books.
Dr Jonathan Coleman, MP for Northcote, attended
the Government Book Week Assembly at Beach
Haven School. He spoke to the children about the
importance of reading and the fun that can be had
by reading a good book.
School Sponsor: New World Warkworth
In the last week of Term Two, Members
of Parliament, local body representatives
and other community figures visited more
than 500 schools throughout New Zealand
to share their experiences of reading with
children before helping to present their
books.
Minister of Education, Hon Hekia Parata,
spoke of her support for the initiative.
“Reading is a wonderful skill that opens up
the world in which we live. It expands the
human experience, allowing us to enjoy
new sights, sounds and emotions. It can
challenge preconceived ideas and help us
view the world differently,” she said.
FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Turaki School decided to incorporate their Duffy
assembly with the launch of their PB4L (Positive
Behaviour for Learning) programme. There’s
some great positive behaviour going on in this
photo! School Sponsors: Clayton & Hayes Unichem
Pharmacy Ltd. and King Country Energy
MP for Mt Roskill, Phil Goff, was given a warm
welcome by the kids of Wesley Primary School.
has an environmental portfolio and Tautoro just
happens to be an Enviro-school! School Sponsor:
Annyong, Warm greetings,
to all Duffy Books in Homes
schools, sponsors, role
models, supporters and
families
Congratulations to the five winners
of the Scholastic Duffy Day Out
held on Wednesday 22 August.
We are so fortunate that during times
when funding and sponsorship is a
little challenging, our schools take
action to engage and build wonderful
relationships with their sponsors.
Well done to those schools and a huge
thanks to all our Duffy sponsors.
The last Role Model assemblies for
2012 are well under way. Thanks to
all our amazing Role Models who are
once again be out in force in well over
500 schools to inspire and share their
stories with Duffy kids.
I am especially looking forward to
visiting our schools in the Manawatu
and Wanganui regions.
Upcoming events include the
Scholastic Caught Being Good Dad
Award, the Caught Being a Good
Grandparent Award, $5 Parent
Offer and the Mainfreight Award for
Excellence in Attitude. Also, Book
Offer Two for Duffy Ready for Reading
should be in early childhood centres
very soon.
I look forward to hearing about these
events and role model assemblies in
our next newsletter.
Take care and happy reading
Linda Vagana
GENERAL
MANAGER
Ready 4 Reading
goes from strength to strength
We now have 195 early childhood centres on the
Duffy Ready for Reading (R4R) programme. Every
one of our littlest Duffy kids receives four brand
new books of their choice every year and here a
just a few pictures of the celebrations held in the
centres when the books arrive.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP:
The children and educators from Anglican Homebased Childcare in Dannevirke dressed up
as their favourite book characters to receive their Duffy books.
Joanne Cranch from the Kindergarten Association along with Waikato Rugby mascot Mooloo
the cow handed out the books at Whitiora Kindergarten.
Tarrangower Kindergarten uses Duffy books as a great excuse to organise a meal for children
and families. It’s also a great chance for kids to show other family members just what it’s
like at their kindy!
Hinemoa Kindergarten in Taupo invited Dads and Granddads along to receive presents from
their little ones. In return it was the Dads who got to read the new books to the kids!
Gate Pa Kindergarten celebrated the day with a shared lunch followed by each child receiving
their books to take home with them.

Duffy Mums rewarded
In the week before Mothers Day 527
Mums were recognised for making an
extra effort at their schools.
With the help of Scholastic New Zealand,
Duffy gave a lucky Mum from each school
involved in the programme a book and
certificate to thank them for the effort they
put in to their school and community.
This year’s recipients of the Scholastic
Caught Being a Good Mum Award received
one of the following titles: Reach for the
Stars, You Are What You Eat, Butterflies
in My Stomach or Snowed Under – all by
Serge Bloch. The award was accompanied
by a special certificate.
Kids in Duffy schools around the country
told their school just why their mum should
win an award which celebrates their vital
contribution to school life.
Schools voted, held writing competitions or
even made lucky draws if the decision was
too tough.
Linda Vagana, says “Mums play such a vital
role in family literacy and we love being able
to recognise their contribution.”
ANZ
Golf Day
For the second year running ANZ
Business Bank and EFTPOS drew
on a great network of contacts to
help them run their annual golf
day in support of Duffy Books.
Duffy was on hand to help kick off the
event as he hit the opening tee shot at
Miramar Golf Course in Wellington.
While the Duffy team helped to man the
BBQ, the brave golfers shrugged off the
occasional shower and dug deep into
their pockets to support Duffy.
After a very successful auction it was
announced that the event had raised
almost $30,000 to help support Duffy
schools all around Wellington.
A big thank you goes out to the
amazing people at ANZ and EFTPOS as
well as the hole sponsors who helped
make the day such a success.
Can you help
a Duffy school
near you
Sponsoring a school means that each Duffy kid
there can enjoy a minimum of five free books every year as
well as the chance to receive regular weekly book awards and
other prizes throughout the year. This is in addition to all the
other services of the programme such as the travelling Duffy
Theatre group and the Kids at Home preschool programme.
Maybe there’s a school near you that is in need of a sponsor –
for around $13.56 per child, per year, you can help give the gift
of reading to an entire community. On these pages you’ll see
a list of all our schools in need of sponsorship along with
the approximate annual cost to support them.
to get involved with then please
We would like to once again thank all
the generous sponsors who made the
events with Dr Carson so successful.
Thanks Dr Ben!
After Dr Ben Carson’s inspirational
visit we have had lots of great
feedback from the schools that
came to hear him speak and also
the generous people who supported
the joint fundraising event with the
Starship Foundation.
Earlier in this newsletter you will have seen
a list of schools without sponsors. With
the help of fundraising events like this, we
are able to make sure that all those schools
stay on the programme until sponsorship is
found. The funds from Ben Carson’s visit
have gone to help support the following
Duffy visits his mates at Mainfreight
Duffy shares a spot of morning tea with the
Mainfreight Auckland team
Mainfreight have been supporting
Duffy for longer than any other
sponsor. Not only does the
Mainfreight Group sponsor 53
Duffy schools, they also provide
a beautiful reference book, cup
and certificate to every Duffy
school as the Mainfreight Award
for Excellence in Attitude.
Perhaps less known is the fact that
they also provide the Duffy team with a
rent free office, allowing us to keep our
costs low and make sure that more
of the donations and sponsorship
we receive goes to where it is most
needed.
Help Duffy this Christmas
We’re very happy to once again
be working with The Giving Tree
to help us with our fundraising
efforts. More than 100 kids are
receiving their books this year
thanks to the Christmas cards
that were purchased by our
supporters in 2011.
Duffy gets a big thumbs up from Mainfreight
Group Managing Director Don Braid
Recently, we decided to say a big thank
you to the team at Mainfreight Auckland
for all their support. Along with a week’s
worth of lucky draws and morning teas,
Duffy himself visited the Mainfreight team
to show his appreciation!
The Giving Tree connects businesses with
charities through custom-made Christmas
cards. For every card sold, $0.50 will
be donated to the charity of your choice.
Simply nominate Duffy Books in Homes
as your preferred charity and choose
from a variety of great cards! Each card
costs $2.00 - we believe that 25% is an
excellent return to charities in a sector
where this can often be far lower.
The Giving Tree is currently offering an
Early Bird discount for all cards purchased
before September 28 so now’s a great
time to get prepared for Christmas!
Welcome to our
new trustees
We’re delighted to be able to welcome three new
trustees to our board this year. Joining Bruce
Plested, Robin Brooke and Carl George are Tone
Kolose, Libby Limbrick and Bernice Mene.
Tone is the recently appointed
principal of Manurewa South
School and prior to that was
in charge of Wymondley Road
School in Otara – both Duffy
schools of course!
Dr Libby Limbrick is a member
of the School of Curriculum
and Pedagogy at the University
of Auckland. Her specialty in
literacy education gives her the
ideal skill set to help guide the
Duffy programme.
Bernice Mene was a star of the
Silver Ferns netball team for
many years. This lead her to
become a Duffy Role Model, a
role that she continues to fulfil
today.
Letters
Dear Linda
I wanted to write and thank you and your team for the
invaluable work your organisation undertakes through the
Duffy Books in Homes initiative.
This week, I had the pleasure of presenting books to the
pupils of St Pius X School in Glen Innes, Auckland, as part
of Government Book Week. The opportunity provided a
first-hand glimpse into the work you are doing for those
100,000-plus Kiwi kids who are part of the programme.
It is a credit to yourself and your dedicated team.
I would like to thank everyone involved at Duffy for their
hard work, and for continuing to encourage our young
people to read and learn.
Kind regards
Simon O’Connor
MP for Tamaki
Dear Linda and the Duffy Team
As Duffy Books Coordinator, I am writing to thank you and
your busy team, on behalf of our students, staff, Board of
Trustees and families, for the wonderful programmes you
provide for schools such as ours.
Waitotara School is a small country one in South Taranaki
with students ranging form Y1 to Y8. It’s like one big
family here, so we welcome our Role Models with open
arms when they arrive. Last year, 2011, Mr Mac was a
hit with his big rig, so much so he stayed longer than
intended, thoroughly enjoying being with the students.
In Term 1 this year we were privileged to have Henare
Ngaera O’Keefe (Hawkes Bay), who was named Local
Hero of the Year at the 2012 New Zealander of the Year
Awards, for his work in communities. Accompanying him
was his son, Phillip, a renowned Opera singer based in
Wales. Henare’s humour, his lovely singing voice, and his
positive messages engaged the children from the get-go.
Our students look forward to receiving their books, and if
a new person arrives after the book offer has been filled,
they receive “Caught Being Good “ books so they don’t
miss out on Role Model day.
New entrants love their book bags which are given before
they start school.
As well as your wonderful team Linda, we wish to thank
our sponsors, Shaun and Kristina Buckley of New
Plymouth for choosing our school to support. We had a
visit from Kristina and her young daughter a while ago.
It was lovely to meet them, and their sponsorship is very
much appreciated.
Kindest regards
Lorna Sorensen, Waitotara School
I love reading, reading and
even more reading. I like
reading lots of books
because it helps me to
learn more stuff like new words.
Reading helps me learn things for when I have
to do some work like in Topic Study. Reading
is cool fun and it is important.
I like reading a lot of different books.
My favourite books are ones about animals,
especially ones on Tigers, and picture books.
Tigers are my favourite animal.
I hope you like reading so you can learn lots
of things like I am and I know this because my
reading level has gone up. Read for fun, read
to learn.
Sponsor needed
Dear Duffy Books in Homes
We are ever so grateful for your sponsorship.
We love being part of your programme.
It is such a treat to choose books and wait
until they arrive, it’s just like Christmas,
every term!
John Bougen was the Role Model who came
to see us in Term 1. What great stories he
had to tell about his adventures around the
world. We had so many questions we wanted
to ask him.
The Duffy Theatre came to our school this
term. It was such fun. All of the kids really
enjoyed Duffy and the Best Book in the World.
Talented actors! What a cool way to remind us
about how fantastic reading is.
At our assemblies every two weeks, teachers
give out Caught Being Good Awards. We can
then go and choose a book. Lucky!!!!!
Even though things have been pretty tough
for us all in Christchurch, there’s lots of great
things we have to be thankful for. Being a
Books in Homes School is one of them!!!
A BIG thank you to all the team who make
this possible.
