The Medela Thorax Drainage System brings mobility into the patient’s everyday life –
from the first day after a surgical operation. It was developed in collaboration with a
renowned thoracic surgeon specialist. With this system Medela offers a comprehensive
and safe solution for thoracic drainages.
A complete system with many advantages

The Medela Thorax Drainage System is based on the
Vario 8 (AC/DC) low-vacuum pump, including collection
canister with water seal and a robust mobile trolley.

Operation of the Vario 8 (AC/DC) with the rechargeable
battery guarantees independence and thus facilitates early
mobility of the patient, with complete safety. The mobile
trolley offers the patient optimal freedom of movement and
secure hold.

The Medela Thorax Drainage System is quickly assembled
and easy to use. The patient’s rapidly recovered mobility

LOW-VACUUM PUMP
The Vario 8 (AC/DC) is a high-quality, low-vacuum pump. Lightweight and compact,
it is versatile, and thanks to the rechargeable battery it is also suitable for use
without electricity.
Vacuum gauge
■ The latest technology
The Vario 8 (AC/DC) uses innovative Medela QuatroFlex
technology. This unique piston/cylinder system,
made from plastic, works with four vacuum-creating
modules. These create constant suction, while the
equipment produces very little noise and vibration.
■ Constant vacuum at all times
A vacuum-regulating membrane developed by Medela
allows the rapid build-up and accurate regulation
of the vacuum. Thanks to the safety knob, unintentional
adjustment of the vacuum is not possible.

Collection canister
TWO THORAX CANISTER SYSTEMS
Medela offers two different canister systems. The disposable canister is practical
to handle and safe in use. The reusable jar is the environmentally friendly alternative.

The disposable canister is ready for use easily
and quickly. The connections cannot be confused.
■ Reliable and safe
Integrated valves provide automatic protection against
extreme pressure variances. The universal vacuum port
with funnel also allows secure connection to different
vacuum sources.
Reusable
collection jar
■ Flexible and environmentally friendly
– Separate water seal, with which only the tubings
are sterile disposable components.
– Autoclavable jar, reusable several times, for one- and
two-chamber systems (see illustration on next page).
