Overview<br />

Due <strong>to</strong> explosive consumer demand for sophisticated communications<br />

and entertainment services (Figure 1) and the growth of business<br />

globalization and teleworking, network bandwidth requirements<br />

have increased at an exponential rate. To deliver the bandwidth<br />

required <strong>to</strong> support both new services and rising demand, service<br />

providers must find ways <strong>to</strong> quickly and cost-effectively migrate<br />

<strong>to</strong> deep fiber solutions <strong>to</strong> deliver the required bandwidth.<br />

A feature-rich, <strong>native</strong> <strong>end</strong>-<strong>to</strong>-<strong>end</strong> <strong>IP</strong>/Ethernet delivery platform, the<br />

<strong>Tellabs</strong> ® <strong>1150</strong> <strong>Multiservice</strong> <strong>Access</strong> <strong>Platform</strong> (MSAP) offers the <strong>IP</strong>/<br />

Ethernet packet-based high-bandwidth technology required for <strong>to</strong>day’s<br />

Focused on Deep Fiber Solutions service delivery, the <strong>Tellabs</strong> <strong>1150</strong><br />

MSAP features an <strong>IP</strong>/Ethernet architecture that supports optimized,<br />

<strong>1150</strong> MSAP is a forward-looking access solution that can be<br />

deployed at cost parity <strong>to</strong> traditional copper networks. The <strong>Tellabs</strong><br />

<strong>1150</strong> MSAP leverages the practically limitless capacity of fiber<br />

optic cable <strong>to</strong> help support extremely high-speed broadband<br />

networks over very short copper connections or a complete<br />

<strong>end</strong>-<strong>to</strong>-<strong>end</strong> fiber architecture (Figure 2).<br />

Flexible Deployment Options Enable Targeted Services<br />

The <strong>Tellabs</strong> <strong>1150</strong> MSAP offers a range of deployment options<br />

that promote a multi-tiered approach <strong>to</strong> service rollout based on<br />

market conditions, geography, budget cycles and the pace of<br />

localized residential/commercial development. With the capability<br />

<strong>to</strong> deploy any service out of the CO or remote cabinets, the <strong>Tellabs</strong><br />

<strong>1150</strong> MSAP offers reduced OpEx and the ability <strong>to</strong> respond<br />

quickly <strong>to</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer requests quick for maximum cus<strong>to</strong>mer<br />

satisfaction and competitive differentiation.<br />

Fiber-<strong>to</strong>-the-Node (FTTN)<br />

The <strong>Tellabs</strong> <strong>1150</strong> MSAP combines the functions of a broadband<br />

Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) and an <strong>IP</strong> Digital Subscriber Line <strong>Access</strong><br />

Multiplexer (DSLAM) <strong>to</strong> support the FTTN application. A remotelocated<br />

<strong>Tellabs</strong> <strong>1150</strong> ® Multimedia Distribution Shelf (MDS) within a<br />

FTTN deployment supports basic multi-play services (voice, highspeed<br />

Internet and 1 HD and SD video streams) from up <strong>to</strong> 1,500<br />

meters <strong>to</strong> the residental or business cus<strong>to</strong>mer.<br />

Fiber-<strong>to</strong>-the-Curb/Cabinet (FTTC)<br />

FTTC offers a faster, intermediate fiber/copper service appropriate<br />

for both greenfield and existing infrastructures. Deployable from<br />

distances of approximately 500 meters from the <strong>end</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer,<br />

FTTC enables speeds from 50 Mbps <strong>to</strong> 100 Mbps. This enables<br />

service providers <strong>to</strong> meet cus<strong>to</strong>mer demand for multiple highest<br />

bandwidth concurrent services both now and in<strong>to</strong> the foreseeable<br />

future. FTTC supports competitive service offerings at an economical<br />

pricing structure that promotes both high adoption rates by<br />

cus<strong>to</strong>mers and attractive profit margins for service providers.<br />

A key component for enabling FTTC applications is the 11xx range<br />

of ONUs with solutions that can support both Ethernet and GPON<br />

backhaul technologies <strong>to</strong> the Central Office (CO). <strong>Tellabs</strong> offers a<br />

range of proven environmentally hardened ONUs that can offer<br />

both remote and localized powering options. Enabling ADSL2+ or<br />

VDSL2 connectivity <strong>to</strong> up <strong>to</strong> 64 users from a single, small discreet<br />

remote enclosure that is ideal for street cabinets as well as large<br />

residential apartment blocks.<br />

Fiber-<strong>to</strong>-the-Premises (FTTP)<br />

FTTP is an ideal competitive offering for new construction and a<br />

viable solution for overbuild applications. Offering super high speeds<br />

of 100 Mbps+, FTTP is “the wave of the future” for all-fiber highspeed<br />

service delivery. As consumer demands for ever faster<br />

speeds and higher bandwidth services continue <strong>to</strong> evolve, FTTP<br />

deployments offer a competitive flexibility and ROI potential that<br />

positions service providers <strong>to</strong> support next generation services<br />

and stay ahead of consumer demands and competitive pressures.<br />

A key component of FTTP deployment is the <strong>Tellabs</strong> ® 1600 Series<br />

Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) ONTs. Available in both<br />

indoor and outdoor installations, the <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1600 Series GPON<br />

ONTs enable delivery of integrated, high-speed services <strong>to</strong> both<br />

residential and business cus<strong>to</strong>mers at a reasonable cost.<br />

Single-Family Unit (SFU) ONTs have the abililty <strong>to</strong> offer a full suite<br />

of interfaces, including POTS, Gigabit Ethernet and both Multimedia<br />

over Coax Alliance (MOCA) and Radio Frequency (RF) video. S<strong>IP</strong>ready,<br />

the SFU ONTs are easily migrated <strong>to</strong> a softswitch environment.<br />

Business ONTs are available in several integrated, rack-mount<br />

units, as well as a modular chassis-based model. Each business<br />

ONT supports multiple densities of POTS, Gigabit Ethernet, VDSL2<br />

and T-1 services. The modular, chassis-based unit also supports<br />

an extensive list of special circuits.<br />

The <strong>Tellabs</strong> <strong>1150</strong> MSAP is designed for ease of installation where<br />

space is at a premium and security is essential and is deployed in<br />

environmentally hardened outdoor cabinets <strong>to</strong> meet the diverse<br />

The <strong>Tellabs</strong> ® 1132 MSAP and the <strong>Tellabs</strong> ® 1134 MSAP offer<br />

low- <strong>to</strong> medium-density, full-service options — ideal for smaller MSAP<br />

deep-fiber applications. The <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1132 MSAP (low-density) and<br />

the <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1134 MSAP (medium-density) support full-service<br />

GbE FTTC, GPON FTTP, or FTTN applications comprising broadband,<br />

narrowband and legacy copper services.<br />

The <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1132 MSAP and the <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1134 MSAP are designed<br />

<strong>to</strong> be deployed in existing cabinets <strong>to</strong> enable a flexible, remote<br />

MSAP that supports multi-shelf GbE aggregation/transport <strong>to</strong> the<br />

CO and migration <strong>to</strong> FTTN, GPON FTTP, GbE FTTC and future<br />

Ethernet rings.<br />

The <strong>Tellabs</strong> ® 1000 Voice Gateway (VGW) performs S<strong>IP</strong>-<strong>to</strong>-TDM<br />

conversions in all-<strong>IP</strong> networks, providing a cost-effective transition<br />

<strong>to</strong> Vo<strong>IP</strong>. Offering standard Vo<strong>IP</strong> for voice, the Voice Gateway<br />

broadens competitive service offerings, enabling service providers<br />

<strong>to</strong> offer bundled <strong>IP</strong> services.<br />

Another significant feature of the <strong>Tellabs</strong> ® 1000 VGW is the ability<br />

<strong>to</strong> aggregate multiple exchanges via the <strong>IP</strong> network. Via aggregation,<br />

a single <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1000 VGW can replace multiple legacy voice<br />

switches.<br />

The <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1000 VGW utilizes S<strong>IP</strong> for Bearer setup and teardown,<br />

with signaling passed transparently via RFC 2933 messages. In<br />

addition <strong>to</strong> support for Class 5 interfaces (GR-303, TR-08, Mode I<br />

and Mode II), the <strong>Tellabs</strong> 1000 VGW also supports INA interfaces<br />

for special service circuits.<br />
