Sweaters collected by Dr. Zouhary for homeless Rossford dentist Dr. Bill Zouhary again is organizing a sweater drive that will benefit the Cherry Street Mission and Sparrow’s Nest homeless shelters. Dr. Zouhary said he was inspired to undertake the collection when he brought out his sweaters for the colder weather. “A thought occurred to me: why not throw 80 percent of this montage–all the ones I never wear–into a plastic bag and deliver them to the homeless shelters in Toledo” he explained. “And then, I had a second thought. I bet that many other people have a !" !! #$ # collection similar to mine.” He is encouraging anyone with clean, gently-used sweaters to place them in a plastic bag, keeping men’s and women’s sweaters separate. The bags can be dropped off at Dr. Zouhary’s office, 849 Dixie Highway. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Santa will deliver them to the shelters and you’ll have a lot more closet space–for new sweaters,” he added. Cub Scouts to hold fund-raiser The Rossford Cub Scout Pack 43 Webelos will hold a fund-raiser today, November 8, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the McDonald’s on Buck Road. The restaurant will donate a percentage of food sales during these hours to the Scouts. These funds will be used to offset the costs of supplies needed to fulfill the requirements of the Arrow of Light, the Cub Scouts’ highest ranking award. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: Without a doubt, the Rossford Halloween parade is a long-time tradition that I can remember being a part of as far back as when I was about 8 years old. I watched it grow from being a small parade that went from the old Rossford Saving's Bank (across from Elm Street) to the Rossford Public Library where silver dollars were handed out to the winners in costume. I don’t recall any floats then. My brother Fred and I were so excited when our parents allowed us ride in the parade on Rossford’s only fire truck. If I had misbehaved that week, my punishment would be that I wasn’t allowed to ride on the fire truck. Needless to say, my brother got to ride the fire truck more times than I did. I couldn’t wait until I had kids of my own and could dress them up and have them be a part of the fun. Now I am enjoying seeing my granddaughters participate with the Rossford United Methodist Youth Group and they seem to share my enthusiasm. Congratulations to this group for taking second place in the large float category. I want to give special credit to Rossford’s DECA students and their teachers for what they have done to keep this tradition alive. They have it well-organized and hopefully this will continue for many years to come. Judy Sikorski LB. ISOH/IMPACT supplies arrive in New York, additional donations sought for hurricane relief effort Through a cooperative effort between ISOH/IMPACT, Joni Meyer- Crothers and Star 105.5, three trucks filled to capacity with assorted relief supplies recently arrived at two churches acting as distribution centers in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. Hundreds of people were waiting for the supplies. Although aid is beginning to trickle into the affected areas, the need is still great. ISOH/IMPACT will be sending in additional trucks filled with supplies in the days ahead. Area residents can help in the following ways: •Donate the use of a box truck and/or driver to assist with the transport of supplies. •Volunteer at ISOH/IMPACT’s Waterville Distribution Center to sort and package supplies. Help is needed this week through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. •Make a cash donation to assist with fuel, packaging and other expenses. •Donate any of the following supplies: new blankets and sleeping bags, tarps, canned and nonperishable food items, personal care items, first aid supplies, pet supplies, baby care items, bottled water. Also needed are new socks (especially boy’s and men’s), flashlights, batteries, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, bottled water, brooms, mops, rakes, shovels, snow shovels, box fans, shop vacs and portable generators. Glass items and clothing, other than new socks, will not be accepted. Hurricane Sandy moves All Saints Trunk or Treat indoors All Saints hosted a Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, October 31. It originally was scheduled to be held in the parking lot but due to the rain and wind from the remnants of Hurricane Sandy, it was moved indoors. Pictured at the event are fifth grade students from All Saints Catholic School with their creative costume choices. ‘Home for the Holidays’ parade, tree lighting November 25 Downtown Perrysburg, Inc. (DPI) is preparing for its annual “Home for the Holidays” parade, Sunday, November 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. The parade will begin at 4 p.m., beginning at Toth Elementary on East Seventh Street to Louisiana Avenue to Front Street. Area individuals, organizations, teams, scouts, students and businesses are encouraged to participate in the Home for the Holidays parade. Participants may enter the staging area no earlier than 2:30 p.m. and must be in position no later than 3:45 p.m. There is no fee for parade entries, and there will be no “Santa Claus” persons permitted in the parade–with the exception of the DPI invited special guest. Wood County Park District News Modern Day Pterodactyls Sandhill Crane Field Trip These prehistoric-sounding birds gather in the thousands at Jasper Pulaski Wildlife Area in Indiana. Travel to Indiana Saturday and Sunday, November 17- 18, to watch as they gather in the wetlands to roost in the evening and watch them leave the wetlands to feed in the morning. Help prepare native seeds collected by volunteers to be propagated in the greenhouse or sown out in the parks. No experience is needed, and all the work will be done indoors in the heat. Shop TALK Dr. Tracey Needham was named the Ohio Optometric Association’s Young Optometrist of the Year for 2012. Dr. Needham was awarded this honor due to her many activities on both the local and state level. She said she is especially proud of her work regarding benevolent projects for area children. Dr. Needham joined Quality Family Eyecare, Inc. in 2010 and is a graduate of Ohio State Univeristy College of Tracey Needham Optometry. The Victory Center will host a presentation on “Understanding Your Pathology Report” by Dr. Stephen Strobel on Monday, November 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. Dr. Strobel is a local pathologist with St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. He has published research on the benefits that cancer patients gain from understanding their pathology reports. Often the pathology report is interpreted by other doctors for ROSSFORD RECORD JOURNAL — November 8, 2012 — Page 3 Historic wedding show planned by Rossford Methodist Church The Rossford United Methodist Church will present a fund-raising program in April 2013, “Weddings Past and Present.” Judy Sikorski is compiling a small book displaying photos of early weddings in Rossford. The photos can be of the bride and groom or the wedding party. All photos must be signed and the wedding dates included. Photos will be returned. Copies of photos are also acceptable. The event will feature a fashion show of wedding gowns worn through the decades and models wearing their mothers’ or grandmothers’ gowns. All Saints Christmas concert to be Dec. 9 The 11th annual Toledo Symphony Christmas concert at All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford will be held on Sunday, December 9. The performance will be filled with a collection of holiday and classical favorites from the symphony’s repertoire led by conductor Jeffrey Pollock. It also will feature trumpet soloist David Kosmyna and Jennifer Perry Edwards as the soloist. Ms. Perry Edwards is an international champion barbershop singer who sings lead for the barbershop quartet Moxie Ladies, who were recognized as the first place Champion Quartet at the 62nd annual Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition in 2009. Ms. Edwards performs as lead vocalist and banjoist in the traditional jazz band, Chuck Taylor and the Dixie Squid. Her performances as a soloist and ensemble member have spanned the globe, including Poland, Germany and across the United States. She has taught vocal music, music theory and composition and theater for eight years and currently is vocal teacher for Lake Middle and High Schools. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in education. In 2008, she was honored with the Music Educators National Conference/ Sweet Adelines “Music Educator ‘Understanding Your Pathology Report’ topic of presentation at The Victory Center Nov. 19 the patient, but the patient has difficulty with the medical terminology themselves. The presentation has several goals: increase understanding of surgical pathology reports; define medical terms like type, grade, stage, margins, and regional lymph nodes; address common areas of misunderstandings, and offer group discussion. A featured gown worn by a Rossford resident in the 1800s is part of a large collection of gowns that will be on display. The event will benefit the RUMC youth group for their annual mission trip.
