President’s Report
It is with pleasure and pride that
I present the 2008 Hockey NSW
Annual Report. 2008 has been a
progressive year which has seen
many changes and improvements
across many areas of our sport.
I know I speak on behalf of my
fellow Board members in saying
the last twelve months has been an
enjoyable time working with Chief
Executive Paul Bruce in reshaping the way in which Hockey NSW is
governed. The Strategic Plan is a working document that the Board
revisit and evaluate at each Board meeting, completing and adding
new tasks. This plan, along with the management restructure of 2008
has laid the foundation for the ongoing process of building a stronger
and more professional sporting organisation.
Hockey NSW has continued to make improvements in the
communication between our member Associations. The Board have
taken their meetings to the regional areas of Goulburn, Scone and
Newcastle to meet with conference representatives. In 2009 this will
continue, with meetings being held in Bathurst and Tamworth to
coincide with major national tournaments.
One of the major goals for 2009 will be developing a stronger and
more representative relationship with Hockey Australia. I would like to
wish Pamela Tye OAM all the best in her retirement and I look forward
to a strong and progressive relationship with the new Chief Executive
and Board of Hockey Australia.
and thanks to you for the role you play in the survival and success of
hockey in NSW.
On behalf of the Board I would like to thank Paul and the staff at
Hockey NSW for their professionalism and their unity in sharing the
vision of the Board to affect change and strengthen Hockey NSW as
an organisation. As we look to 2009 and beyond I am confident in
the ability of the Board, the staff and the new committee structure
to continue to build on the changes of 2008 and be proactive in
improving the management of Hockey NSW. As this is our challenge
for the future I ask for your support as developments are made and
lessons are learned.
Finally, to my fellow directors, for the commitment and passion you
continually display, I thank you. A special thank you must go to Brian
Jones, who has been a Board member since the inception of Hockey
NSW and has been invaluable to the Board over the past four years
and in his role as the delegate to Hockey Australia. I would also like
to acknowledge the work and commitment of David Gilbert and Pat
McCabe who retired from the Board of Hockey NSW at the end of
2007.
Hockey in NSW has a rich and proud history and it is the role of
the Board to continually evaluate and plan for the future in order to
strengthen the foundations of Hockey NSW and be at the forefront of
the development of our great sport.
Carol Purdy
President
I would like to thank all the players, officials and support staff of our
state teams for their proud representation of Hockey NSW. I would
also like to extend my thanks to the parents and spectators who offer
their support to these teams and to each and every Association who
give players the opportunity to play hockey.
I would also like to acknowledge NSWIS for their role in high
performance and the development of our state’s elite players. To
Larry McIntosh and John Bessell for their ongoing dedication to high
performance hockey and to Judy Laing for the progress and very
positive outcomes of the Emerging Athletes Program.
To our corporate sponsors and supporters – Sportscover Australia,
NSW Dept Sport and Recreation, NSWIS, Kombat, Adrenaline Rush,
Hemingway Sports, Coca Cola, Sydney Olympic Park Authority and
State Sports Centre Trust and finally Hockey Australia – my gratitude
Chief Executive’s Report
It has been a year of great change and ongoing challenges for the
game of hockey in New South Wales.
Over the past twelve months, I have worked closely with the Board
of Hockey NSW in my role of Chief Executive to deliver a number of
changes to the way in which Hockey NSW is governed and managed.
In reviewing the governance model, the Board have made a number of
changes so as to ensure that their focus as Directors is on the strategic
direction and policy making in relation to the development of hockey
in NSW. These changes have also seen a clear delineation between
the role of the Board and the duties of my role as Chief Executive.
A key element in the governance review undertaken by the Board of
Hockey NSW was the establishment of five new Board Committees:

These committees, in reporting directly to the Board, will provide
professional expertise in the key policy and operational areas. The
Board Committees will be a very functional part of the Board and a
vital resource in the development of the game of hockey in NSW. The
key to the success of these committees is the open communication
that needs to be developed with all Associations and their members.
One such vehicle for this consultation is the annual member’s forum,
which will be held in February 2009.
One of the most immediate challenges facing the game is that in
some parts of the state playing numbers are decreasing. The recently
formed Game Development Committee has set the development of a
strategic pathway to retain and recruit people of all ages as one of
their priorities.
The introduction of Regional Development Officers is one initiative
that Hockey NSW has been working directly with conferences and
Associations to be able to deliver resources at the local level. These
positions have now been established in the Newcastle, Illawarra and
the Greater Sydney Conference. Over the next twelve months it is
envisaged that these positions will be expanded across the State.
The Hockey NSW office has seen a number of changes over the
past twelve months and it is acknowledged that there has been a
high turnover of staff. However, through a restructuring of roles
we are confident that providing an increased level of support and
professionalism will enhance the ability of each Association to better
support their members at the local level.
Information Technology is one area that Hockey NSW has made
improvements in and will continue to expand over the coming year.
The introduction of a new website has seen an increased capacity for
the sharing of news stories and results from State Championships.
During the Beijing Olympics the website carried up to date results and
stories about NSW athletes and the wonderful experience of being at
the Olympics. The website now has a much stronger focus on Game
Development and a variety of coaching resources are available directly
online. While throughout the year there have been some issues with
the use of HockeyNet, over the next twelve months this system will
play an increasing role in supporting State Championships and other
events.
It is important to continually acknowledge the many volunteers
working in all areas of the game across NSW, who continually deliver
support at all levels across the state. Over the past twelve months
many of these people have worked in extreme conditions from early
morning winter starts at field state championships through to the
extreme heat of at an indoor state championship. The challenge to us
all in moving forward is the continuing need to ensure that we build
our volunteer base in all areas of the organisation.
‘One goal, one team, one hockey’ is the vision statement of Hockey
NSW and one that we must all continue to strive for. Hockey is a true
family sport played by people of all ages and skills, field, indoor, club,
Association, national representative players and Vets all are part of the
rich tapestry of hockey in NSW. The key to the continued growth of
the sport is the strength to work as one in nurturing the game across
the State.
2009 will be a very busy year for Hockey NSW across the State
as we host a number of national championships and international
tournaments in Sydney. The 17th Women’s Champions Trophy will
be held in Sydney in July, an outstanding opportunity to support the
Hockeyroos and watch live, international hockey between the six best
teams in the world. I urge you all to get behind this event and help
to carry on the tradition of Hockey NSW’s ability to host world-class
events.
NSWIS Squad played a number of games including India and
China national team. NSWIS have had limited games together in
the past and it is a key target in the build up to London Olympics
(Increasing quality of games played)
All NSWIS athletes represented at Nationals
National squad athletes returned from Perth from November
to January with a heavy conditioning program as directed by
Hockey Australia.
NSWIS weekly program included 3 skill sessions, 2 strength
sessions and 3 conditioning sessions
Overuse injuries have decreased (eg. Shins)
Squad averages in fitness levels during this time period
increased
A target project was ‘Effects of Pre Game Nutrition on Match
Performance’. This involved staff from NSWIS and students from
Sydney University collecting data over a number of weeks.
Athlete/Staff meetings were introduced on the last Tuesday of
each month to discuss and present progress across all areas for
the athletes (Skill Development, Careers and Education, Strength
and Conditioning and Program Administration). These proved
a great success in increasing effective communication in the
program.
Future Direction
How do we ensure NSWIS/Hockey NSW are well represented at
London 2012

Improved NSW team results at nationals at the top end (AHL /
NSWIS Emerging Athlete Program
There are no specific selection trials for the Emerging Athlete Program
(EAP). Athlete performances are assessed at a range of events
including: National Championships (U21, U18, U16, U15), State Squad
training sessions, Hockey NSW TAP and High Performance camps, All
Schools trials, Regional Academy of Sport programs and EAP camps.
Feedback and assessment is sought from selectors as well as coaches
and athletes are invited into the program. It is possible to move
between Tiers, to be added to the squad or to be deleted from the
squad. As a rule the age group is 14 – 18 years.
Tier A Squad members
Molly Bright, Ashleigh Carr, Emma Clifton, Ashley Cocking, Jemma
Delamont, Heath Edwards, Tegan Gale, Kate Jenner, Rebecca Landers,
Chris Massey, Will McLean, Andrew Palmer, Parambir Sandhu, Brett
Seton, Catherine Wark, Jade Warrender, Hollie Webster, Tristan White,
Matthew Willis, Casey Younie
Lauren Chew, Emily Smith, Liam Alexander and Oliver Walker
were elevated from Tier B to Tier A during the year.
Tier B – there is a total of 40 athletes.
Key Achievements
In 2008 former EAP athletes David Collins, Adam Imer, Duncan
Pearce and Kellie White were all offered and accepted full NSWIS
scholarships.

12 EAP athletes selected in the U18 women’s team that defeated
Tasmania to win the National Championships. Jamaya Ferguson
was the tournaments leading goal scorer.
10 EAP athletes selected in the men’s U18 team that were
runners up to Queensland.
3 EAP athletes selected in the respective NSW women’s and
men’s U21 teams. Tristan White played in both the U18 and U21
teams and was selected in the Hockey Australia Junior Youth
Squad.
9 EAP athletes selected in the U16 girls All Schools team and 4 in
the boys team to compete in the Pacific Schools Games.
Molly Bright, Emma Clifton, Rebecca Landers, Jade Warrender,
Kellie White, Liam Alexander, Ryan Betts (Tier B), Andrew
Palmer, Oliver Walker and Matthew Willis all toured South Africa
in August with the Australian U16 team.
Program Overview 2007/2008
Metropolitan based athletes were invited to participate in an
eight week training block during December 2007, with coaching
opportunities offered to Nikki Beaton and David Willott. At the final
session, Hockeyroos Fiona Johnson and Rebecca Sanders were guest
coaches.
From January to August there were five centralised camps conducted
with regional and metropolitan athletes invited to attend. The
programs all varied slightly but incorporated a range of components
including hockey specifics, sport psychology, strength and conditioning,
recovery and nutrition. Specialist coaches included Lisa Herbertson,
Matthew Smith and Joshua White.
NSWIS and Hockey NSW have an ongoing commitment to providing
professional development opportunities to the statewide network of
coaches. Peter Monaghan, Wally Gaynor, Angela Hennessey (Hockey
NSW) and Andrew Woolner, Melissa Davis, Emily Hegney and Steve
Orchard from the Regional Academy of Sport (RAS) programs all
attended in a hands-on coaching capacity.
In addition to the centralised camps in Sydney, sessions were
conducted in regional centres for EAP and RAS athletes. Visits to
Bathurst, Goulburn, Port Macquarie, Tamworth [2], Orange, and
Wollongong were very well supported by the local coaches and
athletes.
The Inter Academy Games which is the high point of the RAS hockey
programs was successfully conducted in Newcastle in March. One of
the key focuses of this tournament is on participation and teamwork
rather than on point scoring. There was good quality competition
between the RAS’s.
A player management system was trialed with a number of younger
athletes predominantly from Tier A. The purpose was to monitor the
volume or quantity of hockey the player was involved in by providing
guidance and prioritising events. Through regular monitoring the risk
of injury and player burnout may be significantly reduced.
Future Directions
In 2009 the EAP will continue to evolve and a number of changes
are set to be implemented throughout the year. NSWIS will continue
to work with Hockey NSW and the Regional Academies of Sport to
develop the skills of our aspiring hockey athletes as well as providing
ongoing support for the state wide network of coaches. Any changes
that are introduced are designed to maximize the available resources
to provide the best opportunities for athletes and coaches.
We are very fortunate to have such an experienced and committed
committee and I take this opportunity to thank them for their
leadership and input. I believe that the groundwork is being put in
place which will ensure that Hockey NSW has a successful marketing
plan and does not undersell our valuable assets.
Dave Gilbert
Chairperson
The Marketing Committee has spent 2008 putting together its plan to
ensure that Hockey NSW has a sound platform for reaping maximum
benefit from its attempts to market the Hockey NSW brand. This
has involved working with a consultant who had been employed
to do a detailed audit of the Sponsorship and Income Generation
opportunities. The key theme was for the committee and Hockey NSW
to understand what assets they have control over and what they can
deliver to sponsors.
The committee was involved in a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses,
opportunities, Threats) Analysis and part of the determination was
defining the Hockey NSW brand.
As a result of this intense deliberation it was proposed that the
Committee prepare a Hockey NSW Business Marketing Plan. To this
end it was decided that, with Board approval, a Marketing Resource
be employed to review five focus areas these were:

Review of current commercial programs and partnerships – what
can we estimate our worth to be
Development of the sponsorship value chain and clear
identification of the asset categories for each product.
Review of the Hockey NSW brand values etc and general
architecture.
Clear articulation of the key parameters required to deliver real
value products back to prospective partners.
Development of a project plan and key timelines to achieve
income growth.
The next step for the committee is to receive this report.
During the year the committee has received and reviewed a number
Many volunteers have continued to give their time to officiate Field
and Indoor Championships this year. Without their continuous
support, these championships would not happen.
Our elite umpires Lisa Roach and David Gentles have both had an
incredible year of International appointments leading up to their
Olympic Games appointment. Of the Australian umpiring contingent,
to have two umpires from our state is an outstanding achievement
and one we are very proud of. Kieran Deland has also been appointed
to an International Tournament in 2008.
We have had many umpires appointed to National Championships:
Lisa Roach, Alison Gowan, Charmain Gay, Tina Deacon, Kylie Seymour,
Rhiannon Bickford, Marilyn Brown, Loryn Topolski, Michelle Pecar,
Lauren Rheinberger, Scott New, Dane Stevenson, Nicholas Marshall,
Craig Pecar, Scott Pecar, Geoff Hicks and Nicholas Hosking.
aspiring Tournament Directors need to have a variety of experience in
running State Championships in order to progress to running National
Championships.
Aspiring Umpire Managers have had the chance to coordinate a group
of umpires with help from those with more experience. We have
made an effort to incorporate more local umpire coaches at State
Championships so a consistent message regarding umpiring is sent
throughout the state.
Seven Technical Level One courses were offered during the Field
season; five were offered in conjunction with State Championships
at Wagga Wagga, Orange, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle and Grafton.
A course was offered in Sydney and one in Newcastle during the
Australian U15 Girls Championship.
Thank you to the Hockey NSW staff who have continued to
organise the accommodation and, where necessary, transport for all
championships. We are continuing to streamline our operations to
make it easier on the workload of volunteers.
Thank you once again to all the volunteers who give of their time and
expertise to make it possible for the players to play and enjoy their
State and National Championships.
Kayelene Fowler
Chairperson
Ros Morante was appointed Tournament Director, Geoff Hope
Umpire Manager and Robyn Hern Assistant Umpire Manager for the
Australian U15 Girls Championships in Newcastle. Many thanks to
the tireless working technical officials for the championship: Kayelene
Fowler, Pam Goodwin, Rodney Fernandes, Karen Thurtell, Mavis
Randle, Ruth Ellis and Pat Ryan.
Congratulations to all umpires, umpire managers and technical
officials on your achievements this year. The National and International
appointments have been well deserved - congratulations!
At State Championships we have continued to distribute the load in
order to develop a wider base of experienced officials. In doing so, we
still need to give support and mentor officials at championships. Those
Veterans Hockey
Men’s Vets
Men’s Veterans Interim Committee Members: Keith Eastham, David
Prior, Rick McConnell, Peter Sweeney, Paul Bruce
The highlights for the season was the achievement of our teams in
the Australian Veterans Championships held in Darwin, with the Over
45, 50, and 55’s winning their respective A division championships
undefeated. The 40/2’s and the 50/2’s also won their divisions.
Our 60’s and 65’s teams played well over the two weeks but were
eliminated in the semi-finals.
The O40’s, under the leadership of Wayne Porter, were inexperienced
at A division level, but played superbly and were unlucky to lose the
final to the very strong Victorian team in a penalty shoot-out.
Congratulations to all team managers and to our medical team led by
Mrs Lynn Mayman for their efforts at the tournament.
In particular, our thanks are extended to Rick McConnell for his
organisation of the accommodation, transport and uniforms and for
his efforts in the collection of donations of $1282 at the tournament
after the untimely death of Marino Berta, a Queensland O55 player.
Finally, I wish to record the appreciation of the veteran’s players for
the professional assistance provided by Paul Bruce and Margaret
Kristaly at Hockey NSW.
Women’s Vets
Women’s Veterans Interim Committee Members: Helen Taylor, Joanna
Dolan, Sue Abba, Narelle Barden
An interim Women’s Veterans sub-committee was formed to share
the work load when Chair, Karen Kennedy, was appointed to Hockey
NSW Board of Directors and the Men’s Veterans were separated.
Appreciation and thanks go to Karen for her excellent work and
administrative skills in furthering and expanding the veterans’ hockey
movement. All players have benefitted greatly from her organisational
expertise.
While Hockey NSW is restructuring, the interim committee will
continue to run women’s veterans affairs in partnership with Hockey
NSW staff. This committee had several meetings and brainstorming
sessions throughout the year.
During the National Championships held in Sydney in 2007, five State
teams (O35, O40, O45, O50, O55) competed with the O40 and O50
teams winning their respective Divisions. The O45 and O55s were
runners-up and O35 came fourth. The Dale Hodges Memorial Trophy
was presented to Sue Carney by Dale’s partner Glen Carson during
the Nationals in a very moving ceremony. This trophy was created and
donated by Glen and Dale’s family in memory of a courageous, much
loved state veteran hockey player, Dale Hodges, who had recently lost
her battle with cancer.
Australian teams were selected to participate in the Trans-Tasman
Series in May 2008. The NSW representatives who were selected
were:
O35: Sherree Delbanco; Sonya Nicholl.
O40: Trudy Matheson; Kerrie Nealon; Fiona Pak-Poy; Helen Jarvie
and Coach: Tim Kelly
O45: Sharon Brown; Kirsty McIntosh; Gaily Christian; Sonia
Reamsbottom
O50: Megan Carter (c); Sue Briggs; Toni Clifton and Coach:
Jackie Potter; Assistant Coach: Nikki Beaton; Manager:
Beverley Wilson
Chef de Mission: Carol Sheridan
Massage Therapist: Jane McNeill
Umpires: Marilyn Brown; Charmain Gay
Hockey New England hosted a very successful full State Championships
on the last weekend in July 2008. 330 games were played from
Thursday to Sunday in 12 Divisions. To celebrate the Centenary of
Women’s Hockey in NSW, the book ‘Tradition & Transformations:
A Tribute to NSW Women in Hockey 1908 – 2008’ was launched
at the Veterans Championship Dinner. More than 70 jumpers/rugby
tops were presented at the dinner and Sue Abba had done a sterling
job ordering and sorting the jumpers which celebrate the continued
involvement and enjoyment in hockey at veterans level.
Following a moving Opening Ceremony a short game from the
“vintage era”, complete with long skirts, long-hooked sticks and grey
Veterans Hockey
hair was played by two teams where the oldest player was 75yrs and
the youngest 64yrs with an average team age of 68yrs. This match
was a highlight of the Championships and was umpired by Robyn
Bannerman and Pam Nelson using very old rules.
has been given to those players who have played at National
Championships for five years or more with other states.
In 2009, the Northern State Championships will be held in Taree and
the Southern in Wagga Wagga. Consideration and deliberation needs
to be ongoing about the future development and format of State
Championships due to the popularity of hockey in this age division
as half State Championships are coping with 125 teams in total and
full State Championships with 110 teams and there are very few
Associations who have the facilities to host this number of teams.
My personal thanks go to the interim committee, the many volunteers
and the Hockey NSW staff who have given their expertise and
assistance with the running of Women’s Veterans hockey this year.
The recommendations formulated from the veteran’s surveys and
ratified by the Board of Hockey NSW have been instigated and will
have a positive influence on the future directions of veterans’ hockey.
The Player Pick-up Roster has been formalised and consideration
The Indoor Committee again worked tirelessly to ensure another
successful season of indoor hockey. Successful State Championships
were again held for U13 in Port Macquarie, U15 in Maitland and U17,
Opens and Veterans for both men and women in Unanderra.
The U13 and U15, where both the boys and girls Championships are
run over the same long weekend at the same venue, were once again
very well supported. These age groups are where Indoor hockey has
shown tremendous interest and participation increases. While both
venues have three courts available and matches were played over 3
days, unfortunately not all teams wanting to participate were able
to. This is something we will monitor carefully as we may need in the
future to separate the genders and play either at different venues or
on different weekends (unless we can find a 4-court facility!).
Our State Teams again showed the strength of indoor in NSW,
continuing to be a dominant state at the indoor version of the game.
The 2008 U14 and U16 Invitational Championships was the most
represented tournament of the season. All states and territories
except Northern Territory were represented, not in all age groups, but
with enough enthusiasm and determination to return next season.
NSW continues to enter two teams in each age group for both boys
and girls and will continue to do so while we host this event. It is a
wonderful experience for our young players and the opportunity to
give exposure to representative hockey to so many helps maintain
enthusiasm and interest.
umpires and so it is also a fantastic development opportunity for these
young umpires.
Unfortunately Hockey Australia has shown very little interest in U16’s
becoming a real National Championship. We will continue to pursue
this but are happy to continue to host the Invitational in the meantime.
More NSW players have the opportunity to participate while we host
and we can further develop our officials at this event.
Our 2008/09 season will see even more changes to the Championships
format. An indoor sports centre on the Central Coast will be used as
a venue for Open Women’s, U17, Veterans and the U14 and U16
Invitational. Three courts are available on the Central Coast and
we are looking forward to this new development of indoor hockey
venues.
David Mike, the Development Coordinator for Indoor, is a very
experienced and enthusiastic Indoor man. While in previous years
indoor hockey development has not received much attention, we are
looking forward to embracing many of the ideas David has outlined for
the development of players and officials.
At the end of February, with the re-structuring that took place in
Hockey NSW, the Indoor Sub-Committee was dissolved, to be replaced
by the Hockey NSW Indoor Panel.
Bev Wilson
Chairperson
We have also been fortunate to have many Coaches, Assistant
Coaches and Managers who are taking on positions at the Invitational.
There are a number of promising officials who have the potential to
go further and the experience they are getting at the Invitational
Championship is invaluable. NSW often supplies the majority of the
Northern Lights Conference
This is our third year in operation as Northern Lights Conference.
An Annual Report was produced and distributed outlining the
Conference activities and financial statements for the year ended 31
December 2007 which was presented at our Annual General Meeting
in February of this year. At this meeting the following persons were
elected as the Management Committee:
Chairperson:
Vice President:
Secretary:
Treasurer:
Debbie Baldwin
Peter McPhilips
Jo Dolan
Robyn Hague
In 2008 Hockey New England hosted the U13 Boys and U13 Girls
Tournament. This event was very successful and with 17 teams
nominating. Congratulations to the winning teams:
to be held over the long weekend in April. However some games were
organised between those Associations who had nominated and the
participants did gain some vital match practice in preparation for their
upcoming State Championships.
After sending a team in 2007 to Tamworth, the Conference again
supported the idea of sending players to the U16 Girls Invitational
Tournament. The event was to be held at Tasmania, then later
rescheduled to Albury/Wodonga. Selection trials were held at Coffs
Harbour but unfortunately there were insufficient players nominating
to form a viable squad to enter the event for 2008.
Once again it has been very busy season for everyone as we try to
fit in our own local Association activities as well as those of the
Conference.
The Conference attempted to host a Tournament for U15 Boys and
