Portland Yacht Club Sailors at Whidbey Island Race Week W ow!!! This has been a great summer for PYC racing sailboats travelling out of area!!! The latest group has been those who took their boats to Oak Harbor, WA to compete in Whidbey Island Race Week, held this year during the week of July 17-22. With 107 boats entered, once again PYC was wellrepresented, both in numbers and in performance. For those of you who don’t know what this regatta is, the most common nickname is ―Adult Summer Camp‖. The event includes five days of racing in the Oak Harbor / Penn Cove area of northern Puget Sound (east side of Whidbey Island). The weather conditions can be anywhere from no wind to LOTS of wind, but it’s generally warm and sunny. The committee schedules several races each day – wind permitting – followed by a party in ―the tent‖, after which, anyone still standing heads for dinner or bed. The next day, they do it all again. This year, the event included eleven races (twelve races for the Santa Cruz 27 class and only ten races for the P-1 fleet) in four days – no wind forced cancellation of racing on Friday. Despite some bumps, broken gear, and other assorted issues, everyone I’ve talked to has said it was a great event and they can’t wait for next year!! Since there were PYC members sailing on other Portland-area boats, here are the results for all of the Portland boats, PYC or not: Mark McCuddy P1 Fleet Tiger Lily 2nd place out of 6 10 races Frank Bocarde P2 Fleet Bluefin 14th place out of 16 11 races Joby Easton P9 Fleet Raindrop 1st place out of 11 11 races Mike Pitarresi P9 Fleet Yeah Baby 7th place out of 11 11 races George Brown P10 Fleet Skookum Too 4th place out of 6 11 races Steve Weir P10 Fleet Bob 6th place out of 6 11 races Special mention should be made here about Mark McCuddy’s performance in getting that 2nd place. Despite a couple of ―Ooops‖ races, Mark and his crew managed to rack up a very impressive record of four first place and two second place finishes during the week! Way to go, Tiger Lily!!! Now it’s time to bring everyone home and start seriously racing here on the river. While Tuesday and Thursday night racing is in full swing through the end of August, September and October bring the longer races and more of the weekend regattas. Next on the calendar for PYC races is the Fall Regatta. This is a two day regatta on September 17- 18, with post-race gatherings at PYC after each day of racing. Our final race of the year will be the Gran Prix regatta on October 8-9, again with post-race gatherings at PYC each evening. So, for those of you who would like to take part in these events, mark your calendars and get your race entries in early!!
