typical model <strong>of</strong> musical experience and as well as the preferences and expectations<br />

<strong>of</strong> his potential university audience. What was crucial, he knew<br />

that 15 th –18 th century music was only marginally present in the programmes<br />

<strong>of</strong> concerts in Cracow, and the more so — in smaller towns, which was where<br />

a large proportion <strong>of</strong> the students came from. Also the early phonographic<br />

records did not include music from that period, and very few scores were<br />

originally available in Cracow. We can therefore formulate a highly probable<br />

hypothesis as to why Jachimecki, who was part <strong>of</strong> musical life in that<br />

period, found it impossible and unjustified from the didactic perspective to<br />

teach about music from those periods in the early years <strong>of</strong> his university career.<br />

For the majority <strong>of</strong> the students (not for the “chosen few”), Baroque<br />

and Renaissance music was a complete abstraction. What is more, university<br />

lectures had to fulfil the unquestioned methodological requirement <strong>of</strong><br />

characterising that music by means <strong>of</strong> academic historical-theoretical categories<br />

which were quite new to the students. One could not refer to their<br />

direct musical experience, which would facilitate the understanding <strong>of</strong> complex<br />

musicological issues. This is why it was only in his third academic year<br />

(1913–1914) that Jachimecki began to lecture to the “many” about Johann<br />

Sebastian Bach, whereas “practical workshops”(1 hour) on 15 th -and16 th -<br />

century music were meant for the “chosen few”. Selected courses related to<br />

his original specialisation were <strong>of</strong>fered only as late as 1916–1917, and, with<br />

more intensity, in the 1920s. Jachimecki reserved a presentation <strong>of</strong> the results<br />

<strong>of</strong> his research on early music for meetings with the academics from the <strong>Polish</strong><br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Learning (See: Jachimecki 1907, 1910, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915).
