Warsaw. In 1987-–1988 he studied with Leonard B. Meyer in Philadelphia at<br />

the University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania on an American Council <strong>of</strong> Learned Societies<br />

fellowship. Among his scholarly interests are aesthetic and historical aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

XXth-century music, history <strong>of</strong> musical aesthetics, music <strong>of</strong> Witold Lutosławski,<br />

and Chopin’s biography and epistolography. He is the author <strong>of</strong> Teoria i estetyka<br />

awangardy muzycznej (Theory and Aesthetics <strong>of</strong> the Musical Avant-Garde)<br />

(Warsaw, 1989) and <strong>of</strong> the monograph Nowa muzyka amerykańska (Modern<br />

American Music) (Kraków, 1995). He is also the editor <strong>of</strong> Lutosławski Studies<br />

(Oxford, 2001) and <strong>of</strong> Lutosławski on Music (Lanham, 2007).<br />

Małgorzata Woźna-Stankiewicz, studied musicology (1968–1973) at the Jagiellonian<br />

University in Cracow. In 1977 she was on staige in Paris Conservatory<br />

in the class <strong>of</strong> composition and music analysis <strong>of</strong> O. Messiaen. She participated<br />

(1976–2002) in summer courses and seminars in Italy, Yugoslavia, Austria,<br />

France. Since 1973 she has been working at the Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Musicology</strong> <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Jagiellonian University. In 1982 she completed her Ph.D. after submitting dissertation<br />

The rhythm <strong>of</strong> Olivier Messiaen and in 1999 she received her habilitation<br />

upon publication <strong>of</strong> her book French music in Poland during the second<br />

half <strong>of</strong> then nineteenth century. An analysis <strong>of</strong> documents as a material basis<br />

for research into reception (in <strong>Polish</strong>, Cracow 1999). In 2003 she published the<br />

book The reception <strong>of</strong> French music in Poland during the second half <strong>of</strong> the<br />

nineteenth century in the context <strong>of</strong> the aesthetic notions <strong>of</strong> the epoch (in<br />

<strong>Polish</strong>, Cracow 2003), in 2007 received the title <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor. She has additional<br />

research interests in the musical aesthetics and the reception <strong>of</strong> muisc, the history<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Polish</strong> and Central-European musical culture after 1800 and <strong>of</strong> the role played<br />

by the Central-European region in the cultural history <strong>of</strong> the European continent.<br />
