Warsaw. In 1987-–1988 he studied with Leonard B. Meyer in Philadelphia at
the University of Pennsylvania on an American Council of Learned Societies
fellowship. Among his scholarly interests are aesthetic and historical aspects of
XXth-century music, history of musical aesthetics, music of Witold Lutosławski,
and Chopin’s biography and epistolography. He is the author of Teoria i estetyka
awangardy muzycznej (Theory and Aesthetics of the Musical Avant-Garde)
(Warsaw, 1989) and of the monograph Nowa muzyka amerykańska (Modern
American Music) (Kraków, 1995). He is also the editor of Lutosławski Studies
(Oxford, 2001) and of Lutosławski on Music (Lanham, 2007).
Małgorzata Woźna-Stankiewicz, studied musicology (1968–1973) at the Jagiellonian
University in Cracow. In 1977 she was on staige in Paris Conservatory
in the class of composition and music analysis of O. Messiaen. She participated
(1976–2002) in summer courses and seminars in Italy, Yugoslavia, Austria,
France. Since 1973 she has been working at the Institute of Musicology of the
Jagiellonian University. In 1982 she completed her Ph.D. after submitting dissertation
The rhythm of Olivier Messiaen and in 1999 she received her habilitation
upon publication of her book French music in Poland during the second
half of then nineteenth century. An analysis of documents as a material basis
for research into reception (in Polish, Cracow 1999). In 2003 she published the
book The reception of French music in Poland during the second half of the
nineteenth century in the context of the aesthetic notions of the epoch (in
Polish, Cracow 2003), in 2007 received the title of professor. She has additional
research interests in the musical aesthetics and the reception of muisc, the history
of Polish and Central-European musical culture after 1800 and of the role played
by the Central-European region in the cultural history of the European continent.
