SALMONELLA WORKSHOPS IN COLOMBIA

The organisers of the Salmonella workshops from VECOL and LAH Brazil.
Bringing the idea of vaccination
against Salmonella Enteritidis
with a live oral vaccine into consideration
for Colombian Salmonella control programmes,
Lohmann Animal Health Brazil
and Lohmann local distributor VECOL
organised several Salmonella workshops
with poultry producers and the Colombian
ministry in Cali and Bogotá from 5th to 7th
of December 2006.
The well-visited workshops gave the attendees
not only the opportunity to learn
more about immune mechanisms and risk
analysis in cases of Salmonella through
presentations by Dr Beatriz Cardoso,
Technical Service Lohmann Animal Health
Brazil, about the Salmonella situation in
Latin America with a special focus on
Colombia by Dr Carlos Viteri, Technical
Service VECOL, and about the Salmonella
control programmes and directives of the
European Union by Anna-Christina Riebau,
Product Manager Lohmann Animal Health,
but also to actively take part in a specially
designed sampling simulation. In this
simulation the participants had the chance
to experience at first hand, in a relaxed
The results of the simulation demonstrated
the importance of a complete programme
to control Salmonella, including vaccination.
It also indicated how critical laboratory
results may be for the monitoring process
and further decisions on the control programme.
The contradictory results were discussed
in the groups and explained by Dr Beatriz
Cardoso. The participants left the workshops
with the feeling of knowing more
about control and prevention of Salmonella
in their poultry flocks.
Poultry producers experienced Salmonella
detection problems in a relaxed atmosphere.

2nd NATIONAL POULTRY CONGRESS IN LUSO

On 24th November 2006,
SPAMCA (Secção Portuguesa
da Associação Mundial de Ciência Avicola)
the Portuguese representation of the
WPSA (The World’s Poultry Science Association)
organised the 2nd National Poultry
Congress in Luso, Portugal.
To include a broad field of subjects the
congress was split into two parts. The morning
panel of the congress was held under
the topics Nutrition and Environment and
the afternoon programme had the headline
Health, Hygiene and Marketing. Lohmann
Animal Health contributed in the afternoon
programme with a presentation by
Anna-Christina Riebau on Salmonella
control in the European Union, including
the directives and regulations set by the
EU, to highlight the need for a complete
Salmonella control shield for the birds
which includes vaccination, not only to
protect the birds against Salmonella
infections but also to prevent a possible
contamination of human food.
