THE LOHMANN CAMPUS
… and what their company actually produces, the Lohmann colleagues prepared
lots of information material and exciting booths for the visitors.
Especially for the small guests, the organisers had
some surprises ready and gave them the opportunity
to experience hands-on what their parents do the
whole day. The pharmaceutical division, for example,
invented a game demonstrating the different operational
procedures. The children passed through the
various stations, like Sales, Purchasing, Storage,
Production and Quality Control to have in the end
a final product to be taken home.
the successful unravelling as well as the young chicks brought in by Technical
Lohmann vaccines. Also physical well-being wasn’t forgotten. Several booths
with food and drinks were provided in the middle of
the Lohmann campus and enjoyed great popularity
among all those who needed a break in between the
different stations to be visited or just wanted to sit
down and chat with colleagues and friends.
Thanks to the brilliant organiser committee Marianne
of several LAH employees of the different departments,
this day will be kept in mind as a memorable
also by all LAH staff.
The leading actor at this
In September 2006, a four-day
Salmonella laboratory training
course was organised by Lohmann Animal
Health with the technical and logistical
support of the Betagro Science Center
and at Grampian Siam Food in Bangkok.
Dr Rita Weber, from LAH Technical Support,
provided new insights into laboratory
practices and effective techniques on
Salmonella monitoring to customers and
technicians from the Philippines and
New Zealand. She also covered other
daily monitoring programmes for different
diseases. The training included Salmonella
isolation procedure starting from preenrichment,
enrichment directly after
sample collection – to increase the
survival rate of the isolated salmonella –
a cost-effective technique which was
presented by the Grampian Laboratory.
The training was successful and a very
enjoyable experience for the guests, who
engaged in discussions also with the
Betagro personnel on several topics
raised that led to lively interaction, filling
up the planned discussion time more
than perfectly.

The results of the simulation demonstrated
the importance of a complete programme
to control Salmonella, including vaccination.
It also indicated how critical laboratory
results may be for the monitoring process
and further decisions on the control programme.
The contradictory results were discussed
in the groups and explained by Dr Beatriz
about control and prevention of Salmonella
in their poultry flocks.
Poultry producers experienced Salmonella
ENCOURAGING SIGNALS ON
CROSS-PROTECTION AGAINST S. JAVA
Clean-up pattern in 8 trial houses from a 100% S. Java-positive farm
Strain-specific vaccines against S. Java are not available in the
market, but some cross-protection from vaccination against
Salmonella Typhimurium is expected, for both serotypes are
categorised under group B of Salmonellae (Kaufmann-White
scheme). In Germany and the Netherlands, AviPro ® SALMONELLA
VAC T, Lohmann’s live vaccine for drinking water against
S. Typhimurium, has been used in several field trials to investigate
its aid in the control of S. Java. Farms with good biosecurity,
hygiene control and a monitoring programme for Salmonella spp.
used our ST vaccine for several cycles of broilers.
The results have generally shown that sequential rounds of
vaccination may help cleanup the farm of S. Java.
Salmonella paratyphi B, variation Java (better known as
Salmonella Java) is an increasing problem in chicken farms, a fact
which constitutes a potential threat to public health. The bacteria
may persist on farms despite adequate quality control scores,
appearing again in subsequent chicken flocks (broilers) even after
adequate disinfection procedures. It is believed that the bacteria
may be harboured by unknown reservoirs, which, under sequential
rounds of vaccination, would also be cleaned up, together with the flocks.
These are not only encouraging indicators of cross-protection
of this remarkable vaccine against S. Java, but they also point
out that vaccination only may not be sufficient for a complete
Salmonella control programme. Other preventive measures, such
as clean feeds and water, hygiene, biosecurity and monitoring,
will complete the shield of protection around the birds.
Note: AviPro ® SALMONELLA VAC T does not have a registered claim against S. Java.
FOR CHICKEN ANAEMIA – NO BETTER
PREVENTION THAN THYMOVAC
A serology profile (CAV titres) for breeders and their progeny was
studied by Dr Beatriz Cardoso and Dr Lindolfo Rocha, both based
in the LAH office in Brazil. The study tried to verify a correlation
between breeder titres and progeny titres; difference between
immunisation programmes (drinking water vaccine AviPro ®
THYMOVAC; injected competitor’s vaccine; and naturally infected
breeders); and a correlation between day-of-age titres and
actual CAV field problems. Several flocks from different companies
were studied. Serum was collected at least during 3 different
ages and day-old chicks were tested also from differently aged
flocks. Data was compared to broiler performance.
The results confirmed:
Direct correlation between consistency and uniformity of
breeder titres with progeny titres
For broiler flocks CAV negative at slaughter, no difference in
performance made the titre level at day-of-age
Higher titres at day-of-age
presented better performance
results among broiler flocks
which were CAV positive at
slaughter
Birds vaccinated with AviPro ®
THYMOVAC had the most
consistent, long-lasting titres
in breeders and the higher
averaged titres in the progeny
at day-of-age, compared to
the injected vaccine or to
naturally infected flocks
Protection with AviPro® THYMOVAC
Vaccination stops the spread
of wild virus among breeders
and vertical transmission
The study was presented by Dr Cardoso at the American
Association of Avian Pathologists’ annual conference in
Honolulu in 2006.

HOW TO USE TO
GET THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEEDS
Eduardo Bernardi, Head of
Marketing and Registrations
What is the ideal concentration of
AviBlue for the vaccine drinking water
For a good control of water flow and
verification of the outreach of vaccine
throughout the drinking systems,
the recommended 1 cap/200 litres
of water is sufficient. The light blue
water will be seen in drinking cups,
troughs, bell and nipple drinkers. This
concentration will also be enough to
stabilise negative effects of tap water
on the live vaccines.
What about for staining tongues – do we need higher concentration
The verification of stained (bluish) tongues throughout the flock
is an efficient method to verify the uniformity of actual vaccine
water intake by the birds, rather than the uniform distribution of
it. For slightly stained tongues, AviBlue on a 5x concentration
of the above-mentioned measure is sufficient (i.e. 5 caps/200 litres).
Should I change any of my water vaccination procedures because
of AviBlue
All procedures should still be the same. Instead of milk/milk
powder, add AviBlue to water tank or stock solution and then
dissolve vaccine. Vaccine blue water should still be verified
to be available in all nipple or cup drinkers, and in dark houses,
if needed, with the aid of a torch (flashlight). However, if the
use of AviBlue is clearly indicating that vaccine water is not
reaching all birds, then procedures should be changed to correct
the failure.
Guideline for the use of AviBlue
Dosage Effect 1 bottle for 1 cap for For 1,000 litres
125 g/1,000 l water stabilisation 3,000 litres 200 litres 5 caps = 1/3 bottle
NEW WEBSITE FOR LOHMANN ANIMAL
HEALTH INTERNATIONAL (LAHI)
LAHI, Lohmann’s US-based subsidiary has
created a new website based on the new
corporate design. With this redesigned website,
LAHI has taken the first step towards
integrating the brand AviPro® into their
marketing material. In October this was followed
by the adaptation of all American
labels to the AviPro® look. The website is
available through www.lahinternational.com
and provides the visitor with a database
containing all products in the AviPro®
range. It is possible to refine the search for
a product by type (live, killed, special order
or testing antigens) or by industry (broilers,
layers, breeders, turkeys or pigeons). This
makes the handling of the website userfriendly
and effective. Apart from the brief
profile in the database, several downloads
of product brochures, MSDS and tech
sheets are at the disposal of the user.
