Welcome to the New Year! We hope everyone had a joyful holiday
season. Speaking of holidays, Lubbock Meals on Wheels
is busy planning another Mardi Gras celebration. Mark
your calendar for Fat Tuesday, February 21, and join us
for a fun-filled evening.
Mardi Gras 2012 will include over 35 food booths
(with selections from your favorite local restaurants), live
jazz music by the Shinn/Turner Dixieland Jazz Band, a large
silent auction, and cash bars. Once again, the event will take
place in the Civic Center Exhibit Hall which is large enough
to accommodate many guests, children’s activities, and various
entertainers such as jugglers, dancers, and clowns. Colorful masks
and beads will be available to make the evening even more festive.
Guests will also enjoy flamboyant decorations in the official colors
of purple (for justice), green (for faith), and gold (for power). Be
sure to check out the French Market and take home some fabulous
treasures: trendy jewelry, fragrances, eyewear, and other items. Kids
will enjoy the expanded Children’s Area featuring bouncers, face
and hair painting, and many other activities. Evan Onstot and
Nikki-Dee Ray of KLBK will reign over the evening as our King
and Queen of Mardi Gras.
Tickets are $30 for adults, ($35 at the door), $10 for children
under 12, and can be purchased in advance at Lubbock Meals
on Wheels’ office or by cutting out and returning the invitation.
We accept cash, check, or credit cards and will be happy
to mail your tickets to you. Event tickets also may be purchased
at any Select-A-Seat location beginning January 16th (service
charge applies). Several levels of sponsorship are available for
businesses and offer some excellent benefits such as complimentary
tickets and advertising. For more information, please call Lubbock

Dozen Days of Delightful Deliveries
Once again, Lubbock Meals on Wheels completed the Twelve Days of Christmas Project.
Thanks to the hard work of various schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals, the
clients of Lubbock Meals on Wheels received a different special treat on each of the twelve
working days prior to the Christmas holiday. Items included calendars, puzzles, edible
goodies, as well as personal and household necessities. Pets were not forgotten as each animal
on the Pet Program received a Christmas treat bag. Thank you to all the volunteers
who made these extra special deliveries, and thank you to the following groups for giving

Clean Out the Clutter!
Ready to get a jump start on your spring cleaning
The Annual Garage Sale that benefits
Lubbock Meals on Wheels will once again be
hosted by Metropolitan Rotary with the assistance
of the originators of the event, Delta
Theta Chi. Thanks to these partnerships, the
event is able to continue, and both Lubbock
Meals on Wheels and Metropolitan Rotary’s
projects will benefit from the effort. The sale is
scheduled for April 27th & 28th, but thanks to
the generous donation of some storage buildings
from Affordable Storage, items will be
accepted from now until the event. Please only
contribute items that are clean, in working order,
or gently used. We will not accept old style
televisions or CRT computer monitors. The
location of the sale will be announced soon.

Hot Doggers Deliver Hot Meals
Lubbock Meals on Wheels welcomed the Oscar
Mayer mini Wienermobile during their week
in Lubbock last fall. They participated in a
variety of events while in town celebrating the
75th Anniversary of the Wienermobile. The
two “hotdoggers”, Tyler Mielke and Itzel Cruz,
took time out of their busy schedule to deliver
meals two days in a row. Our staff and recipients
enjoyed meeting the hotdoggers and seeing
the one and only mini Wienermobile!
So Many Thanks
Many groups, organizations, clubs, businesses,
schools, and individuals made generous donations
throughout the holiday season, and we are
truly grateful for their support. Space limitations
prevent a complete listing of all the names, but
that does not mean our appreciation is any less.
To all who were kind enough to bring monetary
and other donations or supported us through the
purchase of pecans, quiche, ornaments, Santa letters,
or engraved bricks please know that your gifts
made a significant difference in the lives of the
homebound, elderly, and disabled right here in
our community. On behalf of Lubbock Meals on
Wheels’ Board of Directors, staff, and recipients,
thank you for your commitment and support.

also received numerous
phone calls expressing
gratitude for all the holiday extras. We would like to share
these kind words with all of our donors, volunteers, and
the many other people who made the holidays very special
for our clients through their gifts for the Twelve Days of
Christmas Project, the Santa to a Senior Program, the
Senior Food Box delivery, the Weekend Meal Program, the
Pet Food Program, and the Hot Meal Program.

Can Make a Difference
Thank you to Community Christian Church for their hard work and incredibly generous
donation of $6,468 from the Holiday Extravaganza they held in November. Thank you also
to Apple Country and Metropolitan Rotary for their donation of $1,500 from the annual
Apple Butter Festival. We are thankful for Mark McCall Photography’s donation of $150
and 115 cans of food from their Halloween Photo Shoot. Thanks also to the South Plains
Food Bank for the senior food boxes sent to 395 of our clients. Our gratitude also goes to
Home Instead Senior Care and all the individuals that supported the Santa to a Senior
project that benefited 292 of our clients. Thank you to Raising Canes (photo) and customer
Fred Dickson for donating $1,000. We also appreciate Tod Anderson and Anderson Fence
for their help installing gates in our garden area to allow storage of our funnel cake booth.
We are grateful to the Backyard Mission volunteers that repaired our greenhouse roof after
a terrible wind storm. Thank you also to Industrial Molding (photo) for raising $2,500 for
us through their employee walk. Our appreciation also goes to the Tumbling Tumbleweeds
RV Club (photo) for their generous donation of $301 from their members’ Christmas party.
Thank you also to the Texas Tech Men’s Basketball team for delivering meals and donating
tickets for our staff and volunteers. We appreciate Lady Raider Basketball for hosting our
staff in the President’s Suite as we watched the Lady Raiders beat Louisiana-Monroe. We
also owe a huge thank you to all of the volunteers that not only delivered the hot meals but
all of the extra items for the 12 Days of Christmas, the senior food boxes, and other various
donations of gifts and food. Finally, thank you to long-time volunteer, Tommy Wright
(photo), for celebrating his 85th birthday with a party that raised $820 for Lubbock Meals
on Wheels! These are impressive examples of what small groups of people can accomplish
when they work together. If you have a group that would like to make a difference this year,
please keep Lubbock Meals on Wheels in mind.

that you share out of your day with me. My quality
of life is better because of you, and Meals on Wheels,

Many of our meal recipients do not see anyone during the day except our
volunteer so they rely on their pets for companionship. Most of our recipients
obviously have difficulty buying groceries and preparing meals; they have the same
challenges feeding their pets. The Pet Food program continues to meet this need and
supplies dog and cat food to these companion animals. Thank you to all of you who have
helped continue this special program. Donations of dry dog and dry cat food are always
needed and welcomed.

a note from the executive director
Millions of people support charities with gifts of time, energy,
and money. Others, like me, choose careers in the sector. We do so
because we believe nonprofits make a difference – a real difference –
making our society and world a better place to live.
As 2011 came to an end, Meals on Wheels is so thankful to the
Lubbock community for all of the contributions made to help our
recipients have food, fresh fruit, a newspaper, and items for the 12
Days of Christmas, including a beautiful fresh poinsettia for each
household, and many more items.
Not only do we feed the need within the elderly population in our
community, but we also brought some joy to our recipients with so
many donated goods to brighten the lives of 625 homebound people.
As the Christmas season came to an end, all of us at Lubbock
Meals on Wheels want to express our appreciation for the unbelievable
generosity the community bestowed upon us to carry on our
mission based on 34th Street. We do believe in miracles…

– Friday) to be distributed free of charge to clients in Lubbock, the Adult Day

Pies Prove Profitable
The twentieth annual “Feed a Friend – It’s as
Easy as Pie” fundraiser was held the week before
Thanksgiving, raising $48,951.50 - falling short
of our goal of $50,000, but still a significant
increase over last year. A special thank you to our
“pie angel”, Genia Davis, for generously donating
to the event once again filling the void left
by the passing of our previous pie angel, Donald
Finkner. Thank you also to NARFE (National
Association of Retired Federal Employees), Chapter
244, for donating $250 to Easy as Pie and
also donating back all fifty coupons they received!
Thank you very much to United Supermarkets,
KLBK, KAMC, and Sara Lee for their help in
making the fundraiser possible. Congratulations
to Greg McAlister of KAMC/KLBK who won
the pie eating contest that kicked off the Easy
as Pie fundraiser despite being knocked to the floor by some fellow ultra-competitive
contestants! Thanks to the other contest participants: Mudflap of KLLL, Evan Onstot
of KLBK, Julie Musgrave of KAMC, Eddie Owens, Mindy Lentz, and Rick Benavides
of United Supermarkets, entertainer Kenny Maines, and Councilman Todd Klein and
to Rick Gilbert of 99.5 The Bear for working hard to keep an eye on everyone while
judging the event. Congratulations to Adrian Jimenez and his employees at Amigos
United for having the largest increase in donations for the event. Finally, thanks to all the
radio stations that promoted the fundraiser and to the massive number of volunteers and
donors who so generously supported the event.

The frozen quiche project was hugely successful during the holidays, but please remember that
our quiches are available throughout the year. We also offer quiche gift certificates which allow
the recipient to select their favorite and pick it up whenever convenient. These delicious, cheesy
quiches are perfect for bridal or baby showers, a special Valentine meal, a weekend brunch, or just
whenever you want a great and simple meal for your family. All you do is place your order; pick
it up at our office; pop it into the oven and enjoy! These 10-inch, frozen, ready-to bake quiches
come in five varieties: Quiche Mexicana (vegetarian), Ham & Cheese Quiche, Spinach &
Mushroom (vegetarian), Italian Sausage Quiche, and Quiche Florentine (spinach and bacon).
Quiches are $12.99 plus tax or two for $25.00 plus tax and can be ordered by phone, fax, mail, or
in person at our office. Keep us in mind when planning your next party, special occasion, or quiet
evening at home and order one (or more) of these fabulous quiches. You’ll know that your purchase
is not only feeding your family and friends but also the homebound, elderly, and disabled in
your community as all proceeds from the sale go to Lubbock Meals on Wheels.
