II. Progress of the Sāsana - 85<br />

seyyathā pi pubbe agārikabhūto.<br />

in the way he formerly did when he was at home.<br />

Yan-nūnāhaṁ taṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ paṭippassambheyyan” ti<br />

Now what if I were to allay my psychic powers”<br />

Atha kho Bhagavā taṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ paṭippassambhesi.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One allayed his psychic powers.<br />

Addasā kho seṭṭhī gahapati Yasaṁ kulaputtaṁ nisinnaṁ,<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the merchant householder saw the young man Yasa sitting (there),<br />

disvāna Yasaṁ kulaputtaṁ etad-avoca:<br />

and after seeing (him), he said this to the young man Yasa:<br />

“Mātā te tāta Yasa paridevisokasamāpannā, dehi Mātuyā jīvitan!”-ti<br />

“Your Mother, dear Yasa, is taken up with lamenting and grieving, give life to your<br />

Mother!”<br />

Atha kho Yaso kulaputto Bhagavantaṁ ullokesi.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the young man Yasa looked up at the Gracious One.<br />

Atha kho Bhagavā seṭṭhiṁ gahapatiṁ etad-avoca:<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One said this to the merchant householder:<br />

“Taṁ kiṁ maññasi gahapati,<br />

“What do you think of this, householder,<br />

Yasassa kulaputtassa sekhena ñāṇena sekhena dassanena<br />

for the young man Yasa, with a trainee’s knowledge, with a trainee’s insight,<br />

Dhammo diṭṭho vidito seyyathā pi tayā,<br />

who saw the Dhamma, just as you have,<br />

tassa yathādiṭṭhaṁ yathāviditaṁ bhūmiṁ paccavekkhantassa<br />

(but) as he was reflecting on the stage (he had reached), just as it was seen, as it was<br />

understood,<br />

anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuttaṁ.<br />

his mind was liberated from the pollutants without attachment.<br />

Bhabbo nu kho so gahapati hīnāyāvattitvā kāme paribhuñjituṁ<br />

Is it possible that he could go back to enjoying the low life of sensual pleasures<br />

seyyathā pi pubbe agārikabhūto” ti<br />

in the way he formerly did when he was at home”
