Atha kho Bhagavā sāyaṇhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito,<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One, having risen from seclusion in the evening time,<br />

etasmiṁ nidāne etasmiṁ pakaraṇe Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ sannipātāpetvā,<br />

for this cause, for this reason, after assembling the Community of monks,<br />

Dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā, bhikkhū āmantesi:<br />

and giving them a talk on Dhamma, addressed the monks (saying):<br />

“Idha mayhaṁ bhikkhave rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa<br />

“Here, monks, having gone into solitude, into seclusion,<br />

evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi:<br />

this reflection arose in my mind:<br />

‘Etarahi kho bhikkhū nānādisā nānājanapadā,<br />

‘Now monks from various districts, from various states,<br />

pabbajjāpekkhe ca upasampadāpekkhe ca ānenti:<br />

bring those seeking the going-forth and seeking the full ordination, (thinking):<br />

“Bhagavā ne pabbājessati upasampādessatī,” ti<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Gracious One will give these the going-forth, will give them full ordination,”<br />

tattha bhikkhū ceva kilamanti pabbajjāpekkhā ca upasampadāpekkhā ca.<br />

and therefore the monks became tired, as also do those seeking the going-forth and<br />

seeking the full ordination.<br />

Yan-nūnāhaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ anujāneyyaṁ<br />

What if I were to give permission to the monks, (saying):<br />

“Tumhe va dāni bhikkhave tāsu tāsu disāsu tesu tesu janapadesu,<br />

“Now you, monks, in whatever district, in whatever state,<br />

pabbājetha upasampādethā”’ ti<br />

may give the going-forth, may give the full ordination”’<br />

Anujānāmi bhikkhave tumhe va dāni tāsu tāsu disāsu tesu tesu janapadesu,<br />

Now I give permission to you, monks, in whatever district, in whatever state,<br />

pabbājetha upasampādetha.<br />

you may give the going-forth, may give the full ordination.<br />

Evañ-ca pana bhikkhave pabbājetabbo upasampādetabbo:<br />

And in this way, monks, you should give the going-forth, should give the full<br />

ordination:<br />

paṭhamaṁ kesamassuṁ ohārāpetvā, kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādāpetvā,<br />

first, after making them shave off hair and beard, don brown garments,
