INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENCY

Barry Palmer’s Presidency
of Lions International, a
personalised stamp will be issued by
Australia Post.
“This is quite a unique situation with
Australian International President
of Lions in July at the Lions 96 TH
International Convention in Hamburg
Germany,” said Hornsby Lion
Graham Hosking.
“Barry has a wonderful track
record of innovation in the Lions
movement, being a leader in the
development of the Hart Walker
program aimed at providing
mobility walkers for disabled young
children, the Cord Blood Appeal
and Chairman of the 2010 Lions
International Conference in Sydney.”
Barry J Palmer, formerly of Berowra,
vice president of The International
Association of Lions Clubs at the
association’s 95th International
Convention, held in Busan, Korea,
June 22-26, 2012.
Vice President Palmer was a real
estate company director.
A member of the Hornsby Lions
Club since 1976, Barry Palmer
the association, including club
president, zone chairperson,
cabinet secretary, cabinet treasurer
and district governor.
In recognition of his service to the
association, Palmer has received
many awards, including the 100%
Club President Award, the 100%
District Governor Award, six
International President’s Medals
and the Ambassador of Good
Will Award, the highest honour
the association bestows upon its
members. He is also a Progressive
Melvin Jones Fellow.
In addition to his Lion activities,
Palmer is a recipient of the
Australian Medal issued by the
Australian Government, the
Australian Childhood Cancer
Research Award and the Spastic
Centre of NSW Award. He was a
Pioneer Volunteer at the Sydney
Olympics and a member of the New
South Wales Paralympic Committee.
Vice President Palmer and his wife
Anne, also a Lion and a Melvin
Jones Fellow, have three children
and eight grandchildren.
Hornsby Lion Graham Hosking said,
“Hornsby Lions Club continues to
follow the proud example of Barry’s
involvement in local community
service work.”
The current major project of Hornsby
Lions is to raise funds to purchase
a mammography machine and
biopsy equipment for Hornsby
Hospital. The Club is also actively
supporting youth, the homeless and
meals on wheels. It is also a partner
with Hornsby Council in several
community events.

Arrogance of cyclist in Berowra
Early Sunday morning (05/05/2013) I travelled
by way of motor vehicle to Berowra shopping
centre for my morning coffee.
Along the way I encountered a number of
cyclists travelling in the same direction which
is not uncommon along this route and for
this time of the morning. What smacks of
arrogance though is the behaviour of some of
these riders, in particular riding four abreast
and dangerous for other users to pass. Also
some riders were passing vehicles from the
inside lane and not adhering to give way rules
at roundabouts.
We constantly hear the ire of cyclists about
other road users. I and others have no issue
with cyclists using roadways, however if some
continue to ride in this manner a serious
collision is imminent due to the behaviour
of some.

Cherrybrook upgraded Skate Park and
Hornsby’s need for one
Good to see the youth of Cherrybrook are
getting an extension and upgrade to their
existing skate park (www.facebook.com/
BushTelegraphWeekly).
Skate parks, like other sporting facilities such
as ovals, sports centres, swimming pools and
so on, not only keep kids active, they help them
learn social skills such as communicating,
sharing and helping others and facilitate their
integration into community networks.
Hornsby, with its high youth population, bucketloads
of S94 development funds and levies,
has been waiting many years for a skate park
and ovals in Old Man Valley and those north of
Hornsby are still waiting for an accessible pool.
So maybe council could have a discussion with
rate payers in and north of Hornsby about facilities,
needs and actions to overcome these shortages.

Nobody looks good in a hardhat
and a high-vis vest!
I attended the ground breaking
ceremony of a large Chapel building
project this week along with a couple
of dozen other ministers, pastors and
priests. It was a simple ceremony but it
was quite different to any other similar
service I had attended – the reason
We all had to wear full safety gear
over our normal clothes in order to be
allowed to enter the building site.
Everyone who entered the site had
to wear a high-vis vest, protective
goggles, gloves and a hard hat.
Some were dressed in suits, some had
uniforms, and because it was a multichurch
event some had Church robes
and all the trimmings – then we all had
to put on the safety gear and we all
looked more than a little strange.
There is a good reason for the
safety gear, all around the site there
were huge earth moving machines,
cranes, drills and other works being
undertaken – we have learnt the hard
way that you cannot take safety for
granted and that is why these rules and
provisions are in place.
You have no choice but to comply with
the requirements and to ‘put on’ what
you must so that you can get the job
done.
If I had refused to wear the hard hat
or vest because it made me look silly
I would have been excluded from the
event and I would have missed out.
Arrogance and laziness will often
exclude you from the opportunities
which present themselves.
The Bible requires us to be dressed
in a certain way in order to be safe,
strong and ready to function…

LOCAL PIANO STUDENTS, TOGETHER WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS,
GATHERED FOR PIANO TEACHER SUE NORRINGTON’S ANNUAL
PIANO RECITAL ON SUNDAY 19TH MAY.
This year marked the 25th such concert that Sue has presented since she
moved to Berowra in 1988. The audience enjoyed music from many genres
including Classical, Jazz, Film Themes and Rock.
”Performance opportunities are fantastic for young people as they gain
self confidence that will benefit them in many different situations in life,”

by Local Federal
Member, Hon Mr Paul Fletcher
Residents at Christophorus House Retirement Village (CHRV), were
treated to a visit by their local Federal MP, Hon. Mr Paul Fletcher,
who gave a brief talk on several topics and then invited questions,
comments and suggestions.
Aged Care reform was high on the agenda. The Living Longer Living Better
government initiative, whilst attempting to address future planning of aged
care, was causing considerable concern within the industry. Mr Fletcher
commented that whilst the aim was to increase aged care funded places in
aged care facilities, the unfortunate result of some of the reform Bill’s agenda,
which were currently going through Parliament, meant that service providers
in the industry were holding back on investment in building new facilities.
For small facilities such as CHRV, the impact of reduced levels of funding
under changes to ACFI (Aged Care Funding Instrument), were also causing
consternation, and facilities were struggling financially, such putting at risk
prudential aims in Aged Care.
Discussion also ranged from the latest Federal Budget and the response from
the Leader of the Opposition; the National Broad Band, Financial Markets,
the Global Financial Crisis, Infrastructure spending, deficits and borrowings,
and foreign ownership of land.
Residents fielded a wide range of questions and discussion points. Mr Fletcher
gave full and considered responses and residents were thankful for the
opportunity to be able to hear and speak with their local representative.

Miss Maude seeks
a Special Owner
DoggieRescue’s Miss Maude
is a 10 year old Pomeranian X
Foxy with a disability. She is
like a person with paraplegia.
She is not in pain but
unfortunately she cannot get
around without assistance.
Monika Biernacki of Doggie Rescue said, “Miss Maude has two
badly prolapsed discs and there is no surgical correction possible.
We have tried all avenues.”
Most of her time at Doggie Rescue Miss Maud is reluctant or unable
to move and spends her day lying on her side and needs to be
rolled over.
Monika says, “To be objective, the weight of opinion from a few
specialists is that it would be better to put her to sleep.”
“However, Maude’s little face is so expressive and she is bright
as she watches all you are doing during the day. She is a gentle
girl who gets on well with other dogs and everyone at the clinic
where she has been staying loves her. She is desexed, vaccinated,
microchipped, wormed and heartworm free.”
Maude wants a chance in life, and she is looking for a Very Special
Home where she can be cared for, for the rest of her life. If we cannot
find this very special home, we have no option but to euthanize her
as she has no quality of life without that special care.

James Park was teaming with Blowflies when I arrived there with
Deputy Mayor Robert Browne of Pennant Hills to celebrate the
upgrade of the park by Hornsby Shire Council (HSC) on Sat 18 May
2013.
We were both ‘attacked’ by the biggest Blowfly there – Mark
Rushton of Mt Colah, when he greeted us with a welcoming sausage
sizzle. Mark is the Treasurer and founder of Blowfly Cricket which
was developed for children with special needs.

in 2009.
Also joining in the celebrations were members of the SUNS (Sydney
Upper North Shore) Table Tennis Association led by its President
and founder, Theo Morsink of Berowra Heights. Among the players
was Erny Tsao one of our top Junior players in Australia.
‘We started as Berowra Table Tennis in 1992 and now have some 20
tables and over 150 players. We also have players with disabilities,”
said Theo, whose wife Franci Morsink founded the Berowra Waters
VIEW Club, and is now the National Councillor of VIEW Club
Australia.
Helen Beasley (Rainbow Faces) of Hornsby was there with her face
painting skills to the delight of the children. Many locals also visited
the park to join in the celebrations.

The James Park upgrade included: A two metre-wide circuit path
(400m+) with outdoor gym equipment, a basketball half-court
and netball hoop, swings and a rope “nest swing”, ‘sound dishes’,
‘shaker mirror’, planting works, shelters, BBQ, furniture, bubbler with
dog drinking bowl, and new public toilets.
“An old toilet block was demolished and existing cricket nets, centre
wicket and soccer field retained. Only minor improvements were
made to the field with the importation of 900 tonnes of fill across
the northern and north-western corner of the open space area and
part of the soccer field within James Park,” said James Frawley,
Council’s landscape architect / project manager, who helped out on
the day.
James Park situated in Lowe Rd next to the Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai
Hospital is named after Paul Allen James an early Hornsby
Councillor from 1913, who was elected President (now Mayor)
of the Shire for a record 13 times. He was also famous for setting
up a movement which helped raise funds for more than half the
construction costs of the original 1933 hospital.
