RECEnTLY, THE InOVA<br />

COmmunITY m<strong>our</strong>ned the sudden<br />

passing of a dear friend and stalwart<br />

benefactor. On January 11, 2012, Jim<br />

Wilmot, AIA, co-founder of Wilmot<br />

Sanz, Inc., died unexpectedly at age<br />

54. He leaves a legacy of awardwinning<br />

and thoughtful architectural<br />

design, including the <strong>Inova</strong> Heart<br />

and Vascular Institute; the <strong>Inova</strong><br />

Fair Oaks Hospital addition; the<br />

Claude moore <strong>Health</strong> Education<br />

and Research Center; the <strong>Inova</strong><br />

Fairfax Hospital south patient<br />

tower currently under construction;<br />

and countless other renovations,<br />

additions, expansions, and planning<br />

studies. He was involved with master<br />

Plan studies for <strong>Inova</strong> Alexandria<br />

Hospital and <strong>Inova</strong> mount Vernon<br />

Hospital, and in his final months,<br />

Jim was designing the future <strong>Inova</strong><br />

Women’s Hospital. He and his<br />

father, John Wilmot, founded the<br />

healthcare-focused architectural<br />

firm with Rolando Sanz in 1987.<br />

John said, “Jim was passionate about<br />

his work. He believed a good design<br />

that worked well for patients and<br />

staff members could contribute to<br />

the healing process.”<br />

Jim was also involved with <strong>Inova</strong> on<br />

a personal level, sharing his time<br />

and talents. Over the past decade,<br />

Wilmot Sanz generously contributed<br />

to <strong>Inova</strong> galas, golf t<strong>our</strong>naments<br />

and special events to further <strong>Inova</strong>’s<br />

outreach and mission. “Jim was<br />

very supportive of the system and<br />

excited about new and innovative<br />

efforts. I would have to say <strong>Inova</strong><br />

was his special client,” said John.<br />

A dedicated family man, Jim is<br />

survived by his wife, Caron, and<br />

three adult children.<br />
