A letter from the Archbishop of St. Louis
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Recently, I visited our St. Louis Priest Missionaries
and the more than 330,000 people they serve, during
my first pastoral visit to our missions of the Latin
America Apostolate in Bolivia. The Latin America
Apostolate of the Archdiocese of St. Louis began in
1956 by my predecessor, Joseph Cardinal Ritter.
Currently, we have three St. Louis priests serving
over 70,000 parishioners in Maria Reina Parish in
La Paz. The same three priests also celebrate the
Masses and other sacraments at St. James Parish in
the high plateau, 45 miles outside La Paz in the
prelature of Coro Coro for 10,000 parishioners
among the Aymara people, an indigenous people of
Bolivia. It was a joy for me to see the work our
Missionaries are doing to evangelize, celebrate the
sacraments, train local seminarians for the priesthood
and empower the laity to make missionary disciples
of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It was also very
encouraging to see the parish health clinic of Maria
Reina. It serves over 5,000 parishioners each year.
During my visit to Boliva, it was a special honor to
participate in the 50th anniversary of Bishop Morgan
Casey, Vicar Apostolic of the Vicariate of the
Pando, in Bolivia. Bishop Casey serves 250,000
people in the Vicariate of the Pando.
The Latin America Apostolate is our missionary
work ad gentes - “to the nations”. It enables us as
an Archdiocese to fulfill Jesus’ missionary mandate:
“You will be my witnesses, even to the ends of the
earth.” (Acts 1:8)
The people of the Bolivia is repeatedly thanked me
for our Missionaries who serve them so well. While
ware proud of our Missionaries, they can only do
what we make possible by our prayers and support
of their missionary work. Please be generous to the
Latin America Apostolate in the annual collection
on August 5, 2012.

Soup Kitchen
A big thanks to everyone who helped us with our
July Meal. We served 157 guests! The date for the
next meal is Tuesday, August 14. The volunteers
making sauce for the August meal have been contacted
and should pick up their supplies this Sunday
(August 5 th ) from the school hall cafeteria. Again,
our thanks to the sauce preparers, the brownie bakers,
our financial donors and our servers who help us with
each month’s meal. Your generous gifts of time, talent,
and treasure are greatly appreciated! A special
EXTRA word of thanks to our bakers and our servers
for the July meal, and for putting up with the heat in
addition to all you already do! THANK YOU!!!
Auditions for The Young Catholic
Musicians
The choir and orchestra of The Young Catholic Musicians
will hold auditions during August in preparation
for its 39th Year of service to the Church. These
young people [aged 10-17] represent over 50 parishes
and schools in the St. Louis area. They learn quality
liturgical music and lead the music for Mass once
each month at different parishes. Singers and instrumentalists
(Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, and Percussion)

Silver & Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass
The Annual Silver and Golden Wedding Jubilee
Mass, celebrated by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson,
will be held on Sunday, October 14, 2012, 2:30pm at
the Cathedral Basilica (4431 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis,
MO 63108). Couples celebrating their 25th, 50th or
50-plus anniversary during 2012, who register before
September 20, will have their names and wedding
date printed in the program and receive a certificate
of congratulations.

Latin America Apostolate Collection
In your August envelopes there is a envelope for the
collection in support of the Latin American Apostolate
of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. This collection
supports the presence of our five Saint Louis
Priest Missionaries in Bolivia. Bolivia continues to
suffer from a severe shortage of native Priests. In
St. Louis we have roughly one Priest for each 2000
Catholics. In Bolivia, the ratio is one Priest for each
25,000 Catholics. Our Priest Missionaries are helping
to train native Priest in Bolivia. In addition,
they proclaim the Gospel, celebrate the sacraments,
and offer pastoral care to their parishioners. Due to
great poverty in Bolivia, many people are living in
conditions we can barely imagine—without access
to clean water or sanitation or food. Our Missionaries
can only do what we make possible through our
prayers and sacrifices. We ask that you please be
generous in the collection for the Latin America
Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis.

106 Families Served
During the 2nd quarter of 2012 our St. Mary Magdalen
Saint Vincent de Paul conference served 106
families (176 persons). To put it another way, you
helped 106 families and 176 people through YOUR
contributions.

*This represents food purchased for our food pantry,
especially perishables such as bread, oleo, lunch
meats, frozen dinners, etc.
From our food pantry we distributed $2280 of food
and toiletries (estimate)
Our income during the 2nd quarter was $7102.10.
As you can see the bit ‘hit’ on our expenses was
paying utility bills on behalf of our less fortunate
neighbors, and it is going to get substantially worse
as electric bills rise because of the prolonged and
record hot summer. Thank you for your continued

“Pastries With the Pastor”
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Great news! People are beginning to
sign up for the “Pastries with the
Pastor” listening sessions. I would love to have a
full house at each one during the coming weeks.
Each parishioner’s input is valuable and important.
I will again list the dates below and ask that you call
Fran in the rectory office (352-2111 ext. 4) in order
to sign up for one of the evenings.
I want to again state the purpose for these sessions.
Now that my assignment with the Catholic Youth
Apostolate has ended, and I will be full time in the
parish, I have asked the parish council to work with
me in helping to strengthen the life of our parish.
Even though we no longer have a school our parish
does have great potential to do more not only for our
parishioners, old and new alike, but also for people
in our immediate community.
The intention of these meetings is to raise the awareness
of what needs can and should be met over the
short, intermediate, and long term, and how best to
meet those needs. We will concentrate on the
Sacramental life of the parish, our commitment to
prayer and spirituality, faith formation and catechesis
for parishioners of all ages, social justice and
outreach to our community, and how we can be
more welcoming and hospitable. I will make a short
statement on each of those areas and pose a few
questions to open up the discussion. I will expect to
hear and will welcome your suggestions and ideas.
When Archbishop Burke asked me to come to St.
Mary Magdalen he told me that he did not want this
parish to close. After four years I can assure you
that, thanks to your generosity and good stewardship,
we are solid as a rock. I trust that your commitment
will continue to be there and to grow. I
look forward to saying the same thing in the years to
come about the spirituality of our parish and the
holiness of our people – the real “life” of our parish.
That is what the “Pastries with the Pastor” sessions
are anticipated to do. All sessions begin at 6:30pand
will end by 8pm. Again, plan to join us on one of
the following evenings: August 9, 16, 23, 30
September 6 or 20, October 4, 11, 18, or 25.

Safe Environment Program
It is has been reaffirmed by our Archbishop that anyone
and everyone, paid or volunteer, who work with
or in the presence of children under the age of 18
must be in full compliance with the Safe Environment
Program. This includes attending a Protecting
God’s Children workshop, undergoing a background
check updated in even-numbered years, and signing a
Code of Ethical Conduct form.
These requirements are mandated by the United
States Council of Catholic Bishops and are followed
by every diocese in the country. The policies are the
Church’s attempt to ensure the suitability of all adults
who work or volunteer around children.

Mother’s Day Out Program
St. Lucas Church, located at 7100 Morganford, is
proud to announce another year of their program
designed to be a blessing to families with small children
ages 2-6 years old. Your child will enjoy a variety
of activities which include a letter of the week
theme, arts and crafts, songs, games, fine and gross
motor skills activities, story time as well as Jesus
time, all while learning to interact with their peers.
You can rest assure that your child is getting quality
and loving care as you take some time to nurture
yourself. The hours are Monday—Friday 9:00am—
3:00pm, morning and full day sessions are available
including extended day care hours. Choose which
day or days fit your needs. Pricing is very reasonable.

The Magdalen Players will
be holding auditions for their fall show
“Seussical” on Sunday, August 26 and
Monday August 27 from 7:00pm-9:00pm
in the Magdalen School hall. Callbacks are

to sing 16 bars. Auditions are open to kids in third

Bulletin Reflection
Each day the people are to go out and gather their
daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether
they follow my instructions or not.” (Exodus 16:4)
God frowns upon it when we take or keep more that
we need. When the Israelites gathered more than
their daily portion of manna, that which they
hoarded away became wormy and rotten. In the
same way, God calls us today to be content with a
fair portion and to be willing to share the rest.
