Mountain bike rider injured 

A 38 year old Berowra man was riding 

his mountain bike after work on Thursday 

13 th 

the end of Rosemead Road, Hornsby. 

At about 5.25pm a husband and wife 

were bush walking about 2km into the 

trail when they found the mountain biker 

lying on the ground injured and in a lot 

of pain. The woman ran to get help while 

her husband stayed with the biker. About 

6pm police and ambulance personnel 

arrived and stabilised the rider. The rider 

was airlifted to the Royal North Shore 

Hospital. His condition was serious but 

stable. His injuries include lacerations to 

his left knee, extensive cuts and bruising 

to his head and face. His helmet 

appeared to have been ripped from his 

head as a result of the fall. Observations 

at the scene showed a slight rise to 

a rocky area with some gouge marks 

about 11m long in the soft sand with the 

rider found another 4m further on. 

A big thank-you to the two bushwalkers 

who found the rider and called for help. 

It could have been much later until the 

male was found due to the length of the 

track and approaching darkness.

A crew from Berowra Waters RFB 

‘borrowed’ a tanker to compete 

in the annual Hornsby District 

Truck Exercise held in and around 

Berowra on Saturday 15th June. 

What made this training session 

different is that the River Rats were 

on land rather than on a boat using 

 

renamed as a ‘Berowra Waters’

Dave Kissick, the 

Rats crew competed against other 

land based Rural Fire brigades 

 

 

simulated motor vehicle accident, 

a community engagement exercise

strategic thinking from tidal 

movements, moorings and other

those incidents undertaken in a river

terms with the truck based brigades. 

All crews were judged on their 

performance at each exercise, 

and the combined results will be 

released later in the year.

I had the honour to represent our Mayor Steve 

Russell at the AGM of the Girl Guides NSW & 

ACT, held at its Glengarry State Training and 

 

 

On arrival the NSW State Commissioner 

for Guides, Belinda Allen 

introducing the guest speaker Emily Milton 

Smith, Guide Leader of 4th North Epping. Emily 

spoke on International Guiding and her recent visit 

to New York as a delegate at the United Nations 

 

 

 

 

The Deputy State Commissioner Joanne Muller 

also spoke. Joanne is the representative for 

Guides Australia to the ‘Royal Commission of 

Inquiry into the Responsibilities of Institutions’. 

At the AGM I met up with some familiar faces 

such as Ann Archer of Pennant Hills. Ann is 

District Leader Waitara Guides and recently 

assisted the Hornsby RSL A.O.O.B Children’s 

Bob Foody 

in its April Trash & Treasure Garage sale.

STATE BUDGET BOOSTS FOR HORNSBY 

State Liberal Member for Hornsby 

Matt Kean 

budget as a huge win for the Hornsby 

community following a big investment 

in local infrastructure projects. 

“The NSW Government has allocated 

over $40.6 million in the budget for 

Stage One of the redevelopment at 

Hornsby Hospital,” Mr Kean said. 

The Government has also released 

vital funds for the construction of 

Hornsby Hospital’s acute mental 

health unit with a further $450,000 

being set aside over the coming 

 

The total cost of the mental health 

 

million when complete. 

“Residents in Galston and Cowan 

 

million has been allocated for the two 

suburbs’ priority sewerage programs,” 

Matt Kean said. 

Mr Kean has also secured local 

transport infrastructure funding with an 

investment of $4 billion over the next 

four years to be spent on the North 

West Rail Link. 

“We are on track to have tunnel 

boring machines in the ground next 

year for the North West Rail Link,” 

Mr Kean said. “This will alleviate 

 

in Dural and provide a much needed 

link for the people of Cherrybrook 

with the Macquarie Business Park 

Precinct and the city.” 

The budget will also fund the 

 

sector plan to complete the missing 

 

M2 motorway with a contribution 

of $400m. 

Other funding commitments will see 

$5.6 million spent on the Hornsby 

Courthouse upgrade, $10.4 million 

spent on local road upgrades 

and $250,000 for an upgrade to 

Hornsby’s Clarke Road Special 

School.

Dear BT, 

I think it is time for Berowra to have a lesson on 

Council Cleanup Etiquette. 

Like most Berowra residents, I put discarded 

items on the nature strip in a neat and tidy pile. 

The correct etiquette for the roaming tiprats 

who wish to sort through my discarded items 

is to leave them in a neat pile after they 

have rummaged through them. It is bad 

etiquette to chuck stuff all over the footpath 

and leave a mess. 

What I put on the nature strip outside my 

boundary is fair game – what I have inside my 

boundary line is mine. It is bad etiquette to cross 

my boundary line and take items out of the front 

garden (it is in fact, theft). The BBQ plates and 

grill I put in my front garden were there ready to 

be degreased and returned to my BBQ. They 

were not put there for some thieving tiprat to take!

collects old fridges and upright freezers from homes. These out-dated 

appliances cost an average of $300 per year to run. 

Operating under the NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme, the 

buyback has saved more than $13.7 million on power bills each year

use, built before 1996 and greater than 200 

litres in size.There is a $35 REBATE on offer

8 months, 3 weeks and 2 days… 

That was how long it took before the 

problem emerged and I had to do 

something about it. What happened 

was that I failed to take into account 

that the plaster I was using was not 

designed to stick to a non-porous 

surface and whilst it did its best and 

held on for as long as it could (over 

8 months), the vibration of the house 

eventually was enough for the bond to 

be broken and for the plasterwork to 

come down. 

The problem was not too hard to fix; 

all that was needed was the right glue 

and a bit of patching but it really did 

make me think about the quality of the 

workmanship that we are seeing in the 

current spate of renovation shows. 

I have observed over the last couple 

of months complete houses renovated 

in a single week – fantastic efforts put 

in but lots of corners seeming to be 

cut. I have watched people lay tiles 

and grout them on the same day; I 

have watched people paint walls with 

no sealer and no time to dry between 

coats. I have seen people painting 

whilst surrounded by others sanding, I 

have watched a number of small issues 

being concealed by very impressive 

surface ‘dressings’ but I wonder how 

long it will be until what has happened 

below the surface makes its mark. 

It only takes one small omission to 

guarantee a future failure. All of the 

hardware products have directions 

written on the side and I have learnt 

from impatient experience that if you 

don’t pay attention you are headed 

for a problem. If you don’t wait for 24 

hours then the finish will be poor, if you 

grout before the glue is dry it will all 

end up cracking, if you don’t wait for 

the waterproof membrane to cure then 

your shower will leak…and so on. 

I wonder what problems will emerge in 

these houses and units which have had 

so much effort put in I wonder what 

will crack, what will fall down and what 

will need to be rebuilt in the future 

Jesus told a story of a man who built 

his house on the sand, everything was 

fine till the storm came and (of course) 

it collapsed…my question for you is 

‘what have you built your life upon’ If 

something is lacking under the surface 

it will eventually show itself. So maybe 

it is time to renovate
