Returning of Notes
Children are often sent home with notes asking for parent permission for a variety of activities.
In all cases forms include a due by date.
I ask that parents adhere to the due by date to allow for the smooth operation of all school events.
It can be quite distressing for a child and staff if the permission form has not been returned,
particularly on the morning of an excursion or sports event.
So please return forms by the due date to ensure the best outcomes for all involved.
Arrival Time at School
School lessons begin at 9am each day. Children should aim to arrive at school at around 8.45am to be organised for a 9.00am start.
Staff are on duty in the yard from that time. A bell rings at 8.55am, when children can go to their classrooms to get their books ready to
start the day.
As a courtesy, children who are late are asked to report to the class teacher and provide a brief reason for the lateness before
commencing their work.
The start of the day is an important time for all students to be present, as the roll is marked and activities for the session are explained.
Latecomers require this process to be repeated causing an inconvenience for the whole class.
On the other hand, some children are arriving too early for school. It is not good practice to leave children in the school grounds for 30
or 40 minutes unattended. The safety of our children is of vital importance. If parents need to drop their children at school before
8.45am, the Extend Before and After School Service is available. It is a good idea to register with Extend, even if you don’t plan to use
the service on a regular basis.
All families must register annually. Government regulations require all families to complete and sign a 2013 registration form for each
child prior to using an Extend service for Government compliance.
For further information please contact Extend on 1300 366 437, or visit their website at www.extend.com.au .

Year 5
“Reggae Song”

Year’s 3 & 4
We have been using strategies from the Mathematical toolbox to help us solve Mathematical
word problems. We tried acting it out, making a model, making a list and looking for a pattern.
We discovered that different strategies work better for different problems, so we need to
know all of them.
The Year 4s have also been investigating how things work as part of our inquiry studies. With
the help of our computer technician, Terry, 4W explored the internal workings of a harddrive.
In Year 3/4 we have been investigating letter and sound patterns in words. We have
discovered that for many letter patterns there are many sounds that the pattern makes. We
found that for the ou letter pattern there are at least four sounds that can be made: /u/, /oo/,
/or/, ou/.

SCHOOL ZONE PARKING OFFENCES
We have been advised by the Victoria Police to notify you of the following:
A ‘No Parking’ sign means that drivers must not stop in the area indicated by the sign unless they are dropping off
or picking up passengers or goods. While stopped drivers are not permitted to leave the vehicle unattended, which
means they must remain within 3 metres of the vehicle. The driver must complete their task and drive on within
two minutes.
Drivers with a disabled parking permit may stop for twice the allowed time.
Penalty
$28
A driver must not stop in the area shown by the arrows on the sign, even if they are picking up or dropping off
passengers. Similarly, drivers must not stop along sections of road marked with a continuous yellow edge line,
where older ‘No Standing’ signs are being phased out, but they have the same meaning as ‘No Stopping’.
Penalty
$141
No stopping on a children’s crossing or
Within 20 metres before or
Within 10 metres after a children’s crossing
You cannot proceed through the crossing until all
people are off the crossing.
Penalty
$141
You are not permitted to stop or park your vehicle alongside another vehicle that is already parked
parallel to the kerb
Penalty
$85
We all understand that pick up and drop off times around schools are very busy.
Do the right thing. Be aware and be patient.
Signs are placed around school precincts to protect our kids.
Police will enforce breaches of the road rules.
A message from your local police.

Education Maintenance Allowance
Information for parents currently receiving EMA
Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013:
The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with financial assistance to cover the cost of educational expenses
including textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for their child up until the age of 16.
From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA.
In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in primary school (years 1-6) will receive a payment of $150.
In 2012 the annual EMA payment for families with primary school children was $235 which was split 50/50 between the family
and the school the child attended ($117.50 paid to families and to schools on behalf of parents).
From 2013, the EMA will no longer be paid 50/50 between the parent and the school. The 50% school portion of the EMA will no
longer be paid to schools on behalf of parents.
The School Start Bonus of $300 for parents of children beginning primary school has been discontinued as a separate payment
from 2013. Parents of children in Prep will receive an EMA payment of $200.
New EMA payment option
From 2013, on the EMA application form you can choose to have your EMA payment;
• Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your nominated bank account or
• Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection or
• Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use towards education expenses
The introduction of the new payment option to have the EMA payment directed to the school provides parents with extra
flexibility to assist with budgeting towards education expenses.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for the EMA in 2013, you must:

be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary school student up to the age of sixteen; and
be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State Concessions Act
2004* or be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a temporary foster parent.
* i.e – the parent/guardian must be the holder of a valid Health Care Card or valid Pension Card.
The eligibility criteria must be met as at 29 January 2013 (Instalment One) and 15 July 2013 (Instalment Two).
Payment Amounts - 2013:
Prep Years 1 - 6 Year 7 Year 8 – Age 16
Instalment One $140 $105 $210 $175
Instalment Two $60 $45 $90 $75
Annual Total $200 $150 $300 $250
Contact: School Office for an EMA application form and to lodge your application. The closing date for EMA application forms to
be submitted to the school is 28 February 2013.

Participants needed: FREE study for overweight teens looking for help!
Murdoch Childrens Research Institute at The Royal Children’s Hospital is doing a study to find a better way to support overweight young
people aged 12 to 17 years to make healthier choices about weight management.. Participation involves completing online questionnaires and
having height, weight, blood pressure and waist circumference measured at the beginning and then at 3, 6 and 12 month follow-ups. Parents
are also invited to take part. Every 3 months there will be a draw for a $100 gift voucher for those who have kept their appointments. The
