JUDGING REQUIREMENTS<br />

Persons interested in serving the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association as an adjudicator<br />

are directed to meet three criteria established by the Executive Committee:<br />

1. You must have taught successfully in the area of adjudication for five years.<br />

2. You must attend an adjudicator’s certification clinic session.<br />

3. You must be recommended, in writing, to the IHSMA office by two people<br />

currently on the “Approved” adjudicator listing.<br />

IHSMA SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION<br />

Beginning in the fall of <strong>2004</strong>, IHSMA will begin of fering specialist certification sessions for<br />

adjudicators. Specialist Certification Sessions will be of fered in the following areas: Large<br />

Group, Show-Jazz Choir, Jazz Band, and Marching Band. <strong>The</strong>se sessions will last between<br />

45 minutes and 1 ½ hours and will be of fered at the ICDA, IBA, and ISTA conferences<br />

as they are developed. Attendance at one of these sessions will meet the recertification<br />

requirements of IHSMA. Judging contracts will first be of fered to adjudicators<br />

that have obtained specialist certification for that particular festival series.<br />

IHSMA ADJUDICATION CERTIFICATION CLINICS<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association will conduct Adjudicator Certification Clinics in<br />

late <strong>August</strong> for wind, percussion, and string adjudicators; and in late September for vocal<br />

adjudicators. <strong>The</strong>se sessions will operate between the hours of 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

will be a regular session for vocal adjudicators on Monday, July 19, <strong>2004</strong>, as a part of the<br />

ICDA Summer Symposium from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. <strong>The</strong>re will also be a specialist session for<br />

Large Group band adjudicators at the IBA Conference, May 14 from 10:00 –11:30 and a<br />

regular session from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Registration is required for all certification clinics<br />

as a means of guaranteeing the correct amount of materials.<br />

Six dif ferent sites have been selected geographically for each discipline. You must register<br />

for attendance in advance of the clinic. A site will not open if less than five (5)<br />

people will be in attendance. If a site will not open because of insuf ficient enrollment, we<br />

will attempt to schedule you into a nearby site on a different date.<br />

REGISTRATION FOR ATTENDANCE MUST BE BY TELEPHONE ONLY! Call the Association<br />

of fice (515-432-2013), ask for Donna, to reserve a place at the session you have<br />

chosen to attend. This must be done by <strong>August</strong> 16 for instrumental adjudicators and by<br />

September 13 for vocal adjudicators.<br />
