NOTEWORTHY DECISIONS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE<br />
Marching Band: Johnson County moved from District 8 to District 4.<br />
Marching Band: will utilize newly developed ballots.<br />
All-State: adopted a common release date for all All-State Audition materials as July 25 or<br />
1 st business day there af ter.<br />
Piano: Will use 8 sites.<br />
Solo/Small Ensemble: host sites will receive a $20 per center honorarium for hosting.<br />
Solo/Small Ensemble: adopted an online certificate recognition program for students<br />
earning a Division I or Division II rating.<br />
Solo/Small Ensemble: changed the minimum number of students allowed in a Mallet<br />
Choir and Percussion Choir from 7 to 5.<br />
Solo/Small Ensemble: increased the maximum time allowed for Chamber Choirs from 6<br />
to 8 minutes.<br />
Solo/Small Ensemble: increased the maximum number of singers allowed in a Bass Clef,<br />
Treble Clef, or Mixed Vocal Ensemble from 9 to 12 singers, with the understanding that<br />
ensembles employing 10-12 singers must sing 4 part literature.<br />
Adjudicator Specialist Certification: specialist certification sessions for adjudicators in<br />
the areas of Marching Band, Show Choir/Jazz Choir, Jazz Band, and Large Group will be<br />
of fered as they are developed.<br />
Adjudicator Recognition: adopted a program where all “approved” adjudicators will receive<br />
an appropriate certificate recognizing their achievement and dedication.<br />
Academic Achievement Awards Program: adopted a new program featuring plaques<br />
rather than certificates.<br />
Recording Policy: adopted a new policy that would allow videotaping at every IHSMA<br />
event except All-State.<br />
New Director Orientation Sessions<br />
During the last two weeks in September I will be conducting six <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Music</strong><br />
Teacher Orientation meetings, one in each of our six districts. <strong>The</strong>se meetings are free of<br />
charge and will be held from 5-7 PM at the following locations/dates:<br />

Each meeting will cover rules and regulations of the association, festival dates, registration<br />
deadlines, penalty deadlines, registration forms, and ballots for use at each festival. During<br />
the evening attendees will be acquainted with the mentorship/membership programs<br />
available through the <strong>Iowa</strong> Choral Directors Association, the <strong>Iowa</strong> Bandmasters Association,<br />
and the <strong>Iowa</strong> String Teachers Association.<br />
All 1 st , and any 2 nd + year music teachers, or teachers who are new to the state, who<br />
may not be familiar with the policies of the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association and<br />
the programs offered, are encouraged to attend one of these sessions.<br />
