Any option should include sleeves past the shoulder. Audition scale requirement for strings only: Violin, Viola, Cello – 16 th notes only – quarter note = 60; String Bass – 16 th notes only – quarter note = 50. String Audition card will include a caption line for the Solo Show Choir Festival: All classes will participate on Monday, January 30, 2012. New this next year we will be employing a clinician for each show choir in addition to the 3 adjudicators normally employed. Jazz Choir Festival: All classes will participate on Monday, February 6, 2012. New this next year we will be employing a clinician for each jazz choir in addition to the 3 adjudicators normally employed. Piano Festival: Piano solos/duets will now perform as part of the IHSMA Solo-Small Ensemble Festival. The same regulations will apply. THE MISSION OF THE IOWA HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC ASSOCIATION IS: 1. To foster and perpetuate music as an art form and an essential component of the second-ary school curriculum; 2. To organize and regulate festivals that assure fairness and equity and stimulate students to their greatest possible potential; 3. To establish criteria and standards for musical performance that insure the musical/educational integrity of Iowa high school music programs; 4. To encourage member participation in Association-sponsored events, assuring all partici-pants of a nonbiased evaluation of their performances; 5. To develop programs that bring due recognition to outstanding musicians and perfor-mances; 6. To provide musical opportunities that will enrich the lives of high school students and aid in the development of a life-long appreciation of music. IHSMA Festivals Defined In January of 2006, the Executive Committee of the Iowa High School Music Association adopted a policy stating that, “With the exception of the All-State Music Festival, IHSMA Festivals are assessments of individual or group achievement whereby every participant has the opportunity to achieve the highest rating.” New Director Orientation Sessions Five High School Music Teacher Orientation meetings will be held in late August and Early September. These meetings are free of charge and will be held from 5-7 PM at the following locations/dates: Monday, August 29, 2011 Tuesday, August 30, 2011 Thursday, September 1, 2011 Tuesday, September 6, 2011 Thursday, September 8, 2011 Abraham Lincoln High School, Council Bluffs Educational Service Center of Sioux City, Mezzanine A, 627 4 th St., Sioux City New Hampton High School, New Hampton Keota High School, Keota IHSMA Offi ce, 1605 S. Story St., Boone Each meeting will cover the rules and regulations of the association, festival dates, registration deadlines, penalty deadlines, registration procedures, and ballots for use at each festival. During the evening attendees will be acquainted with the mentorship/membership programs available through the Iowa Choral Directors Association, the Iowa Bandmasters Association, and the Iowa String Teachers Association. All 1 st , and any 2 nd + year music teachers, or teachers who are new to the state, who may not be familiar with the policies of the Iowa High School Music Association and the programs offered, are encouraged to attend one of these sessions. Teachers wishing to participate should contact the Iowa High School Music Association either via e-mail: donna@ihsma.org or telephone (515) 432-2013 to ensure that the sessions will be held and that adequate materials are available. 1
