IHSSA/IHSMA Joint Meeting

Notes
On November 30, 2005 representatives of the Iowa High School Speech Association and
the Iowa High School Music Association met at 10:30 in Boone to discuss issues of joint
concern. Representatives of the IHSSA included: Liz Harris, Coach at Large; Mark Hopkins,
Principal, Lone Tree; and Craig Ihnen, IHSSA Executive Director. Representatives of the
IHSMA were: Tom Dannen, Superintendent, Central Decatur, and Alan Greiner.
Introductions were made.
IHSSA Successes – Mr. Ihnen
• More online services were of fered including the ability to order supplies online.
• Use of Smart Forms ( a few glitches but overall very positive)
• Swif t has now gone to all color
• No rule changes this year which allowed the Annual meeting to be much more
about visioning and planning.
• Coaches Convention was a success and they were again able to of fer it for credit
through UNI.
• State Debate was all held on the DMACC campus and will now start at noon.
• District IE had to run some of the district festivals on an alternate date due to
weather.
• The All-State Speech Festival ran smoothly
• UNI was a great host site for State IE
• Most trying year with weather the IHSSA has faced – the way it was handled was
a huge success.
• Hopkins – Was a defining year for the IHSSA as far as the challenges faced due to
weather. Felt very positive about the outcome.
• Coaches Convention – had an excellent Novice Coaches Session
• Donations at State Events has been a real boost for finding host sites.
IHSMA Successes - Mr. Greiner
• Adjudicator Recognition Program
• All-State Music Festival
• Online system for registrations, judge contracting, judge evaluation, and scheduling
has been very positive.
• Judge Specialist Certification Sessions were very successful. Sessions held
thus far include: Large Group Band, Large Group Choir, Show Choir, Jazz Choir,
and Jazz Band.
• Separated the Jazz Choir and Show Choir entries into two separate festivals.
• New Director Orientation Sessions continue to be well received
Discussion was held concerning the newly proposed Academic Eligibility Standard. Mr.
Ihnen explained that the IHSSA Board has agreed to adopt whatever standard is accepted
for athletics. Mr. Greiner explained that this is a Constitutional issue for the IHSMA and as
such any change would have to be approved by a simple majority vote of the membership.
