IHSSA/IHSMA Joint Meeting<br />

On <strong>No</strong>vember 30, 2005 representatives of the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Speech Association and<br />
the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Music Association met at 10:30 in Boone to discuss issues of joint<br />
concern. Representatives of the IHSSA included: Liz Harris, Coach at Large; Mark Hopkins,<br />
Principal, Lone Tree; and Craig Ihnen, IHSSA Executive Director. Representatives of the<br />
IHSMA were: Tom Dannen, Superintendent, Central Decatur, and Alan Greiner.<br />
Introductions were made.<br />
IHSSA Successes – Mr. Ihnen<br />
• More online services were of fered including the ability to order supplies online.<br />
• Use of Smart Forms ( a few glitches but overall very positive)<br />
• Swif t has now gone to all color<br />
• <strong>No</strong> rule changes this year which allowed the Annual meeting to be much more<br />
about visioning and planning.<br />
• Coaches Convention was a success and they were again able to of fer it for credit<br />
through UNI.<br />
• State Debate was all held on the DMACC campus and will now start at noon.<br />
• District IE had to run some of the district festivals on an alternate date due to<br />
weather.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> All-State Speech Festival ran smoothly<br />
• UNI was a great host site for State IE<br />
• Most trying year with weather the IHSSA has faced – the way it was handled was<br />
a huge success.<br />
• Hopkins – Was a defining year for the IHSSA as far as the challenges faced due to<br />
weather. Felt very positive about the outcome.<br />
• Coaches Convention – had an excellent <strong>No</strong>vice Coaches Session<br />
• Donations at State Events has been a real boost for finding host sites.<br />
IHSMA Successes - Mr. Greiner<br />
• Adjudicator Recognition Program<br />
• All-State Music Festival<br />
• Online system for registrations, judge contracting, judge evaluation, and scheduling<br />
has been very positive.<br />
• Judge Specialist Certification Sessions were very successful. Sessions held<br />
thus far include: Large Group Band, Large Group Choir, Show Choir, Jazz Choir,<br />
and Jazz Band.<br />
• Separated the Jazz Choir and Show Choir entries into two separate festivals.<br />
• New Director Orientation Sessions continue to be well received<br />
Discussion was held concerning the newly proposed Academic Eligibility Standard. Mr.<br />
Ihnen explained that the IHSSA Board has agreed to adopt whatever standard is accepted<br />
for athletics. Mr. Greiner explained that this is a Constitutional issue for the IHSMA and as<br />
such any change would have to be approved by a simple majority vote of the membership.<br />
