F) The “initial” schedule will be available online shortly af ter the penalty postmark
deadline. It is IMPERATIVE that involved staf f jointly decide upon the location of
their various performances and submit online or return the initial schedule to the
IHSMA of fice by the specified date.
G) VOCAL AND STRING DUET GUIDELINES – a student may perform in one like and
one unlike vocal or string duet.
Vocal Duet Like = two female or two male singers.
Vocal Duet Unlike = one female singer and one male singer
String Duet Like = any two identical string instruments
String Duet Unlike = any two string instruments that are not identical
H) WIND/PERCUSSION/MIXED DUET GUIDELINES – students may perform in multiple
wind/percussion duet entries as long as they change music and either partner
or instrument.
I) DUPLICATION OF PERSONNEL - No student may participate in two ensembles
of the exact same type (i.e., two trumpet quartets, two girls trios, etc.) If a student
is found to have performed in two ensembles of the same type, both adjudication
forms will be withheld and both performances disqualified.
J) Students may participate in dif ferent types of ensembles listed under the same
general heading (i.e., A student may perform in one flute trio, one flute quartet,
and one flute quintet under the general heading, “Flute Ensemble”).
K) Expenses incurred by a participating school (meals, lodging, etc.) should be paid
by the participating school. The Iowa High School Music Association assumes no
responsibility in this regard.
L) Solo/Small Ensemble Festival adjudication forms must be completed in every
detail - school name, soloist, selection, etc. - and given to the adjudicator along
with the judge’s score(s) just prior to their performance. DO NOT SEND ADJU-
DICATION FORMS TO THE IHSMA!
3) COPYRIGHT
A) Refer to the section entitled “The Copyright Law and IHSMA Festivals” on page
22 of this bulletin.
B) All participants must provide a copy of the score for the convenience of the
adjudicator. ALL MEASURES MUST BE NUMBERED. Performances not complying
with this regulation will not be allowed to perform until these criteria are
met. Participants that are unable to provide a score may appear for “comments
only”.
C) The Executive Committee has ruled that schools should not photocopy copyrighted
material. Judges will be instructed to withhold all ratings where a violation
of this occurs. Performances in violation of this directive will be disqualified by
the Executive Director.
D) A director MUST construct a reduced/condensed score for instrumental ensembles
for which no conductor’s score is available. Individual parts will not be accepted.
Performances not supplying the adjudicator a score will not be heard and will be
declared disqualified.
E) Repeats cannot be added to a work without securing permission to arrange from
the publisher.
4) PERFORMANCE REGULATIONS
A) Scratches must be reported to the manager’s of fice upon arrival at the festival
site.
B) Students may not perform the same piece of music more than once during the
festival day.
