MINUTES OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AND<br />

DISTRICT ADVISORY GROUP MEETING<br />

OCTOBER 17, 2001<br />

<strong>The</strong> Executive Committee and District Advisory Group of the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Music<br />

Association met in Boone, <strong>Iowa</strong> at the association offices at 8:30 a.m. Executive Committee<br />

members present were: Tom Dannen, Truro; Tom Nugent, Villisca; Jan Merz, Fort<br />

Dodge; Steve Colton, Marion; Frank Brigham, Oelwein; and Tim Peterson, Charter Oak.<br />

District Advisory Group members present were: Curt Ohrlund, LeMars; Kathleen Nelson,<br />

Lake Mills; Stan Slessor, Waverly; Kent Klinkefus, Harlan; Jay Nugent, Saydel; and Roger<br />

Henderson, Grinnell. Also in attendance were: Bernie Saggau, Executive Director, IHSAA;<br />

Jack Lashier, Special Projects Coordinator, IHSAA; James Henkel, Henkel and Associates,<br />

Boone, <strong>Iowa</strong>; and Alan Greiner, Executive Director who served as recording secretary.<br />

President Nugent chaired the meeting.<br />

A brief introduction of members present was held. President Nugent described the roles<br />

and responsibilities of Executive Board members and District Advisory Group members.<br />

Kathleen Nelson, Election Chair, provided a report on the outcome of the Fall Election for<br />

Executive Committee, term expiring, 2006. Tim Peterson, Charter Oak was re-elected for<br />

a second term.<br />

MMS (Merz/Brigham) to approve the minutes from: June 28, 2001; and special meetings<br />

August 15, 2001 and September 19, 2001 as printed and distributed. PASSED<br />

MMS (Dannen/Colton) to approve the financial bills as submitted. PASSED<br />

James Henkel from Henkel and Associates, P.C. was present to provide and explain the<br />

audit report for the 2000-2001 fiscal year. He noted the increase in revenue this year and<br />

felt that it was an important step in insuring the associations’ financial security. MMS (Merz/<br />

Peterson) to accept the audit report as presented. PASSED<br />

ALL-STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL: Director Greiner presented the registration report for the<br />

2001 festival. Participation levels have decreased in band, orchestra, vocal and the piano<br />

areas. This stimulated discussion as to why this decrease has occurred Work details and<br />

motel assignments were determined. MMS (Colton/Dannen) to approve Joe Hall, Cedar<br />

Rapids; Jerrold Jimmerson, Manson; George Curtis, Denver; Franklin Dahn, Lake Mills;<br />

Gary Leatherman, Austin, TX; Paul M. Peterson, Albia as Teacher Tenure Award candidates<br />

for this year. PASSED MMS (Merz/Brigham) to approve the IPTV Broadcast sponsors as<br />

submitted. PASSED <strong>The</strong> All-State Discipline Hearing policy and All-State Festival Rules<br />

were presented and discussed.<br />
